  1. I do have several sets of the books, paperback / hardback, and 2 (coot club and big 6) that travel to the broads with me
  2. I actually managed to wheelie a volkswagen variant over a hump backed bridge once, all I could see was sky
  3. having recently replaced the cheap Beko washing machine with another cheap(ish) beko model, I figured if the original made it to 13 years old, then i should be good enough with the same again, fortunately they did have this in stock so it went in the back of the car and came home with me.
  4. I once had occasion to call in at my local volvo dealership to get the code for the radio, they also provided a full sheet of the original vehicle specifications along with the radio code- all free of charge.
  5. that is the recognised figure for burning 1 litre of fuel (petrol) diesel is a bit higher, propane is a bit lower. so fuel economy doesnt come into it.
  6. if you look at the figures 1 litre of petrol creates 0.6kg of carbon, but as a gas co2 is heavier so 2.3kg of co2 is produced per litre of fuel, this is why the figures are so high. i recently did the calculations for fuel carbon dioxide for my company, and they were just looking at the fuel used by company vehicles, I did suggest that carbon produced by staff commuting to the office be included in the figures so we can have data to promote the installation of electric vehicle charging points. I am also using the carbon footprint as one argument for not driving to the office every day (saving over 350kg co2 per week)
  7. chrome doesnt allow you to accept the risk, it just says it wont let you go to the site. The only way I found to get past that was using an incognito window.
  8. this is what my incognito window looks like
  9. like many others my zoom has issues, like i dont have a camera set up or a microphone, even my alternate chrome browser doesnt allow me to get to the chat, its not even giving me a go there anyway option, however if I use an icognito browser tab it does allow me the proceed to unsafe website option under advanced to open an incognito tab click on the 3 dots and choose new incognito window
  10. you have to be careful with that assumption, working as I do with mains cables and voltages, there is a calculation (i am not clever enough to remember it, but know it exists) that can be used to calculate the fault current from a direct short, the problem is that the further from the source you are the lower the fault current seen at the source due to the resistance of the cable, thus there is a point at which a fault can be present, but not allow enough current to flow to blow the fuse in a reasonable time to protect the cables and source (tyrpically we are looking at hundreds of metres with large cables (300mm2) but the same principle will apply to smaller cables at shorter distances. (eg a bow thruster circuit at the other end of the boat might not blow a 500A fuse even on a direct short.
  11. so far I have not had any mince pies, I dont particularly like them, but will have one on Christmas day if my mum makes any as the pastry is always good on her pies
  12. there are a couple of illustrations in the books showing Horning staithe eg there are some others, but I cant find examples just now, I know there is one from The Big 6 that shows the notice board at the swan end of the staithe.
  13. well I have heard nothing about plans to do so, so either nobody is working out how to do it, or they dont need the cooperation of the energy distributors. that said, if the network people are not involved the only other way of achieving it is through all those smart meters that they have been pushing at people- now thats a possibility, its already been stated that they can control the charging of EV's via the smart meters, not allowing charging at peak hours. this is one reason I have been highly resistant to having a smart meter (the other being them telling me I can save energy with one as I will know what each device is using- (I can already do that, so dont sing its praises to me on that score)
  14. Well I know why the washing machine failed, several burnt out components on the circuit board, that'll do it any day.
  15. grendel

just give it a squirt of de-icer, that will sort it out

you will never manage to defrost the whole of the norfolk broads with just that one can
  17. when I bought my current car i asked if the belt had been changed, as we were close to the mileage, as they were unsure, i got them to renew it for my peace of mind, thus i have a good few years of not having to worry about that ahead.
  18. i used laplink to get the CAD files off the unix server to work on them with the first pc based CAD, that was around win 98 i seem to recall, and plotting took hours on an old pen plotter (during which time your pc was locked out of doing anything else.)
  19. many years back I had a transit van 2.0 litre v4 one day the timing gear stripped several teeth and i came to a grinding halt, one freind came out and towed me back to the campsite where we were staying. a friend lent me their car and I found a scrap yard within about 10 miles, and they had a v4 transit engine, i stripped the front f that van, grapped the fibre timing gear, and a full set of pushrods to boot, and brought the goodies back to my van, in barely more than a day and in the middle of a field I rebuilt that engine with the new timing gear, and used about half the pushrods to replace those that had been bent, engines were good in those days, no fancy belts, all the gears had marks and only lined up one way, after that i managed to drive home and ran the van for several more years.
  20. the appliance jenga was the worst part, as the washing machine fits in the corner, and the dishwasher has to come out to get the washing machine in and out as there is a gas outlet and socket on the wall, plus there is only about 1/2 cm spare space in the gap for the washing machine and dishwasher. then there is a cabinet on wheels that rolls into the gap in front of the washing machine, so effectively the washing machine resides in the dead corner at the join of 2 runs of cabinets, it works, the cabinet rolls out to access the washing machine, then rolls back and deadens any noise the machine makes.
  21. new washing machine bought, loaded in the car, wrestled down the hallway, round the corner and into the kitchen. Appliance jenga played with 1 extra washing machine and whew, tomorrow it will be pull the old machine apart for any useful parts (motors etc) and see if I can find what was wrong with it. I could have pulled it apart first, but then i guess it was nearly new when we got it, and thats got to be at least 12 years ago now. so i guess its been pretty good.
  22. got a weeks holidayas it had to be used up, and now everything seems to be breaking down, today it was the turn of the washing machine, its not spinning, starts off with a great thump and the machine jumps, that is until you try it without anything in, normally it ramps up slowly and gets over it, but now the machine is jumping, i suspect a bearing failed or the shock absorbers, either way the clothes came out wet, and i am now looking for a new one
  23. in fact if you look at all the other import options Holland ireland, norway etc, we are importing from them about the same as we are exporting to france.
