  1. May be to try and learn something about the subject ?
  2. "The Boat that Rocks" would be welcome anywhere !
  3. Gave my twin engine boat a blast over Breydon last year, Stbd engine alarm rings over heating so stopped both engines (no I don't know why either), then another alarm kicks off , the depth alarm, I had ignored where I was to concentrate on the overheating problem, luckily able to get back on track, the point I am trying to make is that we ALL make mistakes, it dose not make us all idiots.
  4. This thread should be re named " why you should go to Spain for your holidays" Enough here to put me off boating !
  5. Hi John An excellent explanation thank you. My second post in this thread I think has been misread/interpreted, I said it was the weight of the cable (chain if you like ) that holds SHIPS in place, huge steel monsters that feed fathoms and fathoms of cable onto the sea bed, not broads cruisers !
  6. We will have to agree to disagree, the purpose of an anchor is not to hold the ship but to hold one end of the chain on the sea bed, in much the same way that a chain would hold itself, given a chain long enough not to drag any anchor at its end is entirely superfluous.
  7. Yes very true. It is the weight of the chain that hold ships in place, the anchor just takes it to the sea bed.
  8. Thanks all. I have a Bruce anchor not sure of the weight, but the gentlest of breezes has it dragging. I will go for the 26kg if it can hold Alex's boat "The Boat that Rocks " it will hold mine !
  9. What is the correct mud weight size to hold a 35ft / 8 ton boat please ?
  10. I have invited 3 old Navy pals for a weekend on the boat Fri 17 July till Sun 19 July. The boat is moored at Brundall and I would like to show them as much as possible in the short time they will be onboard. would like to moor overnight somewhere with facilities if poss but not essential. I usually just wing it but would like to look like I have everything organised ! Any suggestions or even an itinerary would be really appreciated, if this sounds like I have no imagination or planning ability it's because I haven't, just have a good feeling about the members on this forum and their willingness to help, and if not, I'll wing it. Thank you.
  11. Paid my £16.50 for side on berth with electric at Beccles on Sunday and noticed if I was a Sailie I would have paid £13.00 ? ( If been discussed before, sorry, just delete ) Don't want to start a Motor v Sail debate but does a 35 foot motor boat take up more room than a 35 foot sail boat ? or use less electric when plugged in ? We have to give them the width of the river and tip toe around them, but do we have to subsidise them mooring as well ?
  12. Sat having a cold beer in 30c over looking Valetta Grand Harbour, wishing I was on my boat in Norfolk and saw " Sea Below" . My wife said maybe there's a submarine named " Sea Above " ................bless !
  13. At 11.45am that very day I was born. I've been attracting numbers like that ever since !
  14. Am I alone in thinking kids and boats just don't mix ? I have three adorable grandchildren who I love more than life itself, I would do anything for them and often do, but have them on my boat again ? at this moment, I'm not so sure. Kids between 3 and 9 have no sense of fear or danger, its only fun if they can walk along the decks, climb on the roof, hang over the side, do they want to sit and look at nature from Brundall to Beccles ? do they eck ! who ever thought they would. So you can tell them, reprimand them, raise your voice, but is that a fun day out with Grandad , constantly hollering at them ? I was in real danger of being a 'Grumpy Old Man', but the smiles on their faces when I returned them safely ashore and they thanked me for a brilliant day, makes me want to put myself through it all again. anyone else?????
  15. What is the reason for closed season ? breeding season presumably ? is this a nationwide law or just The Broads ? We freeze our Ney Neys off from October to March dangling the worms , then along comes a bit of decent weather and its all off !
  16. Was going to add in my post ' of course this does not happen every night'........but then thought no , too obvious !!
  17. We are big Norwich fans - not the team, the city. Heard all sorts of negative comments re staying overnight at the Yacht Station, but decided to find out for ourselves. Arrived late Monday afternoon, booked in with the BA ranger a young lad with a beard , think he was called Christran ? Around 6pm we heard a drunken lout effin and jeffin spoiling for a fight before eventually putting his foot through a bus shelter showering my boat with glass, the ranger called the police and he was carted off in handcuffs. Full marks to the young ranger who called at each boat to check occupants were ok and apologised for the incident. Unfortunately the fun continued between midnight and 03:00 with a constant stream of louts shouting and screaming and then quiet - until the first buses around 06:00 ! this was Monday in April, wonder if it will be quieter on a Saturday in June ? hasn't put us off the place but maybe as day visitors from now on. Just to reiterate , the ranger was a credit to his job .
  18. Hi Jason, Had the pleasure of meeting you and Sonia last year at Beccles, never had the chance to use your yard , but just remember you as very nice people easily led astray by Alex and Lorna !! Enjoy your retirement. God Bless. John
  19. Hello Mike, yes I do remember, knew you as Jaguar on t'other side ? will say hello on Sunday if I see you, hope you are well and enjoying your boat. Regards, John
  20. Newark not traditionally the best of Jumbles but will be there Sunday en route to Norfolk. Maybe see you there if I knew what you all looked like .......shall we all wear carnations ?
  21. JM. Didn't know this was a contest ? love both places for different reasons. Quite how you compare a department store with a photograph is beyond me but hey ho. In the spirit of banter shall we put this to bed now ? night night.
  22. Old Wussername Agreed mate, just banter, marginalise ? where did that come from ? since having my boat in Norfolk I have come to love the Norfolk people..........even if they do talk daft !
  23. I cant let that comment go without a reply ! whilst you are very fortunate to live on the Broads JM , and I sometimes wish I did too, it must be some time since you were in Leeds to form such an opinion, the city is now vibrant with top names in the retail, Harvey Nicks for one, couldn't see them opening in Lowestoft ? world class theatres and arenas are packed throughout the year featuring the worlds biggest artists, the city is awash with Michelin star restaurants, multi million pound Victoria Quarter & Trinity shopping centres brings shoppers in from all over the country, Art galleries, The National Armouries Museum, etc etc you get my point........ normally like your stuff JM , think your just being a mischievous 'Carrot Cruncher' waiting for a reaction ?
  24. That is definitely a 'Pose' with a hint of 'Pout', common in ex matelots of the 'airy-fairey' variety, but they wouldn't be boating in January !................tougher than he looks that Griff.
