I thought rubbish from hire boats was classed as commercial waste and therefore is the responsibility of the hire yards. I also thought there was some sort of arrangement between the yards that allowed hire boats to use the rubbish disposal facilities at yards they visited as well as being able to dispose of rubbish at the return of the boat. Surely, if this is the case, there is really no need for a hire boat to be disgarding rubbish on riverbanks because their waste needs are far better met than the private boat owners on the network.

You absolutely can't run a wooden boat without a certain amount of thinking time!

I suspect you will find that the cost to the environment of manufacturing the replacement engine, matching gearbox and all associated parts required to make it fit, the environmental shipping costs getting it to your boat from half way round the world, (container, actual ship, box to send it in) plus the cost of scrapping and recycling your old engine will far outweigh the polution your current engine could produce in the future! It's the same with cars. 80% of a cars total environment impact is produced in the manufacture of and subsequent disposal of it. The 20% it produces during its average 10 year road life is minimal in comparison! Yet we are all encouraged to buy 'greener' cars I'm keeping my old BMC and doing the world a favour

A couple of points, Firstly we, for some years, used to insure with the company referred to in previous posts and therefore had been unwittingly making a false declaration to the BA at the point of toll collection. We have since changed companies after becoming aware of the issue. Secondly, you can not buy a temporary toll for a visiting dinghy without making an insurance declaration even though the act does not require such a vessel to carry insurance. So, to comply with the form to buy a temporary toll you are making a false declaration whilst actually complying with the act! Thirdly, also mentioned above, there is no longer a requirement to prove insurance at the time of paying ved (car tax) and hasn't been for a while now. However, it is against the law to own a taxed but un- insured vehicle irrespective of whether it is actually in use or not. Personally I welcome kfurbank's quest to clarify the situation. My boats are insured appropriately and I have always felt the question, at the point of toll payment, to be worthless. If BA actually do not need to ask then it also simplifies their processes so maybe it's a good thing? Just like your mot certificate at the point of VED payment, any policy or declaration to the BA is only valid at the point of sale. Your insurance details are not recorded and, therefore, could expire the following day but your declaration allows you a toll payment for up to 12 months cruising! There are no ANPR cameras on the broads!!

Yes finally! I am thrilled to announce that, following discussions and ensuring all event protocols are met, we are now in the position to finally announce that the 2017 Wooden Broads Cruiser Show has been given the green light for this year. We are, once again, booked for carnival weekend (yay!) 18th - 20th August with our show day being the 19th. Beccles Yacht Station is being run slightly differently this year while some proposed maintenance works are undertaken meaning we have had to look at our event to ensure we are able to run safely on the day. All is now well and we are all systems go with just 20 weeks to go! Our event is going to follow the same basic format as last year which both worked well and which BYS are happy with for this year. SO... Here goes... Our 2017 entry list (so far) represents some of the best builders to grace the broads. Demand is keen and there are just a few spots still available Lady Fontana Fairstar Nipper Georgia Missouri Star Broad Ambition Star Premier Manxman Judith M Tabitha Rose Kingfisher Lady Christina Highlight 5 Swift way Mona's Queen Chameleon Mystic Melody Mystique Golden Cockerel Yet to be confirmed but expected to attend are Royal Tudor Muddy Waters Lady Helena Captain Jack Royal Tartan Oh yes, and me! Probably spend the weekend on a low loader but I will still be happy!
