  2. I recall a story about a swear filter being introduced at scunthorpe council and they couldn't work out why they got no emails all of a sudden, surely certain combinations can set as exceptions. I'm with marshman on my faceache attitude, same goes for twatter and instacrud.
  3. The BMC is a good engine for a river boat as it's proved over a lot of years, not refined but solid and reliable, what is actually up with it? A lot of the time with old diesels a pump and injector refurb gives them a new lease of life without taking the engine out, oil pressure and compression are the deciding factors, and if the bores are ok a head refurb is a relatively cheap and easy option for the cost of a head gasket set.
  4. Perhaps a good job Ian, Alan would have kicked your ass in a fight. Gutted for you Griff, a tour of the hangar wouldn't have taken much to sort I'm sure, still better than the prospect of an in flight engine failure.
  5. As long as it's a straight filler that would do fine if it can handle the head it has to lift to prime, I did much the same on my old boat but now have a 90 degree bend going into my tanks, I made sure my new tanks had drain valve tappings though.

My pela tactics are made even simpler by using a non return bleed nipple meant for brake calipers on each engine filter in place of the normal screw, just nip the top section open with a rubber pipe to pela, suck till bubble free fuel appears in the clear tube of the pela, pull off the rubber pipe and the suction clears the pipe and close the nipple at leisure with no air going back in and job done with no diesel to clear up. Cost £25 per engine to do but paid off in convenience especially when my tanks were rotten and changing filters several times per sea trip, now got new stainless tanks.

  8. A pela type oil sucker does a great job on the last bleed screw in the system, saves loads of messing about with primer levers and bulbs and just leaves the injector pipes to bleed.
  9. If you've had that cav filter apart at all it's very easy to fit a new o ring with the old one still in place as they sit quite deep in the groove, result is usually an air leak into the system and if the filter is above fuel level you won't see any diesel leaking to the outside to give it away.

The filter with the arrow looks like a regular cav pre-filter possibly with water separator in place of filter, it should go from there to engine lift pump then to engine filter then to injector pump, there should be a priming lever on the lift pump for bleeding, this needs the camshaft in the right position to operate properly or will only give short strokes. Engine filter should have a bleed screw, open and work the primer lever till fuel comes out and close screw, if you loosen the metal pipes slightly at the injectors and crank engine over with throttle full open(out of gear) till fuel starts coming out and nip the pipes up while cranking it will often fire up, any misfires need a bit more bleeding. Return pipe is usually from pipe linking the injectors, some have one from injector pump as well. Of course not easy to see exact plumbing from your piccie.

  14. That's handy to know in advance, I have a taxi booked from rockland staithe to chedgrave and back for the 24th, may have to get the dinghy out if no room in the staithe then.
  15. I'm sure a flexi is allowed for a gimballed cooker, sliding is probably another matter.
  16. If you don't have a gas locker fitted look to get something to fit bigger than a 4.5kg butane bottle as they have been like rocking horse poo for the last two years.

As much as you would like a modern boat do remember and old tub can be bought up to modern specs and a manky old tub moored outside a pub while you enjoy a riverside beer is worth 10x as much as a pristine modern boat in a marina because you are busy earning it's upkeep.     Greasing is not repacking, to repack you need the right sized graphite/cotton rope, open the glad and pick out the old packing and replace with 3 or 4 rings of new packing and retighten with just a nip. Water will come in but not that fast, have the rings prepared by wrapping around the shaft and running a sharp knife along to get the size right, when repacking space the joints offset to each other. They should drip at a slow rate as that is what cools them. As a disclaimer I am currently enjoying another very nice rum at nearly 1.00am and the instructions may not be perfectly described.

Without that tide against you wouldn't have stopped, I've gone under a couple of bridges backwards before on a running tide when I knew I was pushing my luck so if I had to abort a hanful of forward throttle would take me away and bury the stern where a handful of reverse would just slow me slightly and still go under while the stern lurches up higher and closer.

  22. I would imagine the maib would work in UT not BST and from the bar, tide tables from different sources often have differences.
  23. Yarmouth harbour dues are waived for vessels vising the broads so effectively no charge, I've never had any mention of a charge through lowestoft either but don't go that way often. Plenty of seals on scroby sand which is a short trip out from yarmouth, I've seen the odd harbour porpoise around the east coast but never a dolphin, seen a few beached whales in lowestoft but they were walking on the promenade eating donuts..... There used to be a pontoon in the trawl dock at lowestoft for waiting for the bridge but no land access, I assume it's still there. If you do one of the cruises with carers I would suggest always have your own passage plan, I spoke to some in southwold once that didn't seem to have a clue what times and routes they were aiming for just following the pack, that is a bad way to do things. For the east coast rivers the east coast pilot is a superb book written by locals with a well updated website https://eastcoastpilot.com/, they release entrance chartlets for the ore and deben early most seasons on the website, if going further south http://www.crossingthethamesestuary.com/ is the equivalent with lots of useful chartlets, it's worth buying both books just to support the websites.
