  1. You can't beat a bit of chalkdust for tracing where water has come from, at work we use a developer spray for dye penetrant crack testing that leaves a fine dust behind which works really well.
  2. Also if moored beside someone with a depth sounder of the same frequency you can get bad readings as it picks up their ping, nasa uses 150khz transducers.
  3. Is the transducer sitting in oil? Any air gap will mess up readings, normally they will sit in a bonded in tube full of oil, castor oil is fine. They can be glued to the hull but there must be no air bubbles.
  4. That is where you are going wrong then.
  5. Dogs don't have to be tethered, merely restrained, I looked into the requirements when I first heard about it and it's very vague in whats required, just enough to stop the dog climbing onto your lap as far as I could make out.
  6. With two boats side by side I doubt I'd have any problems with stepping across if needed, jumping wouldn't even enter into it and involving a youngster an absolute no chance. A guy lost a foot and later died in hospital not far from where I live a few years back, he'd been sitting on a tarp on the back of a boat which got dragged in by the prop taking him in the water with it, the boat then reversed to go and get him and drew him in to the prop, not a good move.
  7. With or against the tide? Massive difference.
  8. Harsh but fair, well actually bang on tbh.
  9. I think he gets his fuel here 52.391106462658364, -2.0871042345591584
  10. Proper dual filter setups have a changeover valve MM, bloody pricey too.
  11. Are you sure your tank has the drain valve shut? Don't fancy cleaning your bilge......
  12. That is exactly how it should be in my view.
  13. Mine certainly doesn't, not easy to get underway either.
  14. I'd prefer a warning light and the option to carry on, the engine don't know the sea and weather conditions or how close to a safe harbour.
  15. Engine choice will always be down to planned usage at build stage, a nice economical common rail is good for pottering round the broads but more to cause problems, for sea you can't beat an old school mechanical injected diesel as you can lose all electrical power and they will keep on running, if I was to lose power I would have to lift the floorboards and pull levers to get mine to stop otherwise they would just keep going, as long as they have good oil clean fuel and air, and you can't fix a black box on the go with a set of spanners and a lump hammer. I know of a broom 450 that went into limp mode crossing the channel on the way back from clogsville due to a fuel pressure issue, it was never enough to cause an engine issue but the computer said no, I would have thought getting the crew home safe was far more important than getting the engines home safe.
  16. I have to add to this that due to needing the boat lifted over winter for some gelcoat repairs I called my current insurers to see what type of survey was required as I knew I was due another next year (save the extra lift out cost and all that) and they informed me that they've now changed it to 10 years between surveys instead of seven, and if I uploaded the last one to their new system online they could extend it for me, uploaded last night and now have a cert with the new survey due date, good service I recon and as I'll be due a new bss by then I can get them done together and will be wanting to AF and replace anodes again by then anyway. Thank you GJW!
  17. Rope cutters are far from cheap so the fact it did it's job is not lucky it's prepared. Most with rope cutters think they've wasted money but will probably never know if they paid off, I took mine off as they cost me diesel at speed but I may live to regret the choice, if one wasn't worn out I'd have left lhem in place.
  18. Pub for food every time available, boat cooker is for breakfast bacon sarnies only, oven is a good temperature stable place to store the bread. Any other option is the work of satan or a vegetarian and both should be banished.....
  19. I'd rather fill your van than my boat, 570 litres You certainly chose where to fill up carefully when the option is there. First time I got it down to almost the red sectors on the gauges I started aiming for the nearest fuel stop, then it went much quieter....... Won't rely on the red bit then. Now have new senders in new tanks that definately go to the bottom of the gauge, first fill was by 20 litre can making sight gauge marks via drain valves each can added, took a while but very handy.
  20. I have a feeling most people that flock to Mediterranean beach resorts every summer will find a broads boating holiday disappointing specially when they buy the idea of idly cruising from pub mooring to pub mooring at leisure, it just isn't like that in summer.
  21. How about paddleboard bowling, 10 paddleboards in the proper formation and a stella fuelled hireboat? A bit of side windage and it would be a strike every go.

    Weather

With all the extra rain there's a very good chance the rivers will be much wetter in the future, probably the broads and puddles too.
  23. Fit the hull to superstructure using a zip and all airdraft issues solved, first big hire boat to clear PH bridge has got to be a winner. Gonna need a bloody good user manual to reassemble though.
  24. Most times I plug in there's enough left on a post to last me all night anyway as it's usually just to keep the batteries topped up and fridge on higher power setting (goes on boost when volts are up).
