  1. You could easily reduce road accidents overnight, just remove all the seatbelts and airbags from cars and replace them with a 6" metal spike in the middle of the steering wheel, speed cameras would be a thing of the past then.
  2. £60 just for the certificate??? Robbing gits! I'm sure it wasn't anywhere near that much when I did it (back in 2007, oh crap thats 9 years ago), if you know the routines and radio etiquette and can work your way around the DSC menu then I doubt you would ever get checked up on if you actually have the licence, you can get the fixed ship licence for free with or without the operators cert so you have the proper callsign and mmsi allocated, I would hold fire till the course is conveniently close at a useful time, the hand book pretty much teaches it all anyway. The RNLI don't care if you have a licence, they come out anyway.
  3. We will be there for easter but if all goes to plan it will be mostly out of yarmouth for a good shakedown run and see what falls at speed and what my useful cruising speed will be, and how much fuel can I turn into blue smoke along the way. If you see a trail of blue smoke close behind a lifeboat wave to us won't you...
  4. I used to hate wooden boats but over the lst couple of years I've come to love them. In fact ever since I got a woodburner.......
  5. As Poppy says a new impellor will sort itself first turn of the motor without any issues, don't try with an old impellor as it will probably split once it has taken on a 'set'.
  6. I see from the newsletter in the toll bumpf that BA have 8 new radar guns that are fully portable, I hope they are better trained than EA anglian region inspector that once shouted at me about my speed while pointing a radar gun at me from another boat moving towards me, needless to say I shouted back and it wasn't polite! Can they not work out a speed gun needs to be stationary?
  7. Thats the lion ruled out then.... Don't forget to wander off the rivers a bit, I like the decoy tavern at fritton, great walk from the moorings through the woods to the pub, 1 mile, always seems to end up in rounds with the locals, same with the ferryhouse at surlingham.
  8. How many have actually died on a sinking boat on uk inland waters? The bss was never about sunken wrecks but keeping people alive, many were killed or injured on burning and exploding boats and from CO poisioning before the bss came in so I think it's about right these days, a lot of the advisory items point out the shortcomings to private owners so still has the desired effect. Most boats sink when left alone an uninhabited.
  9. I'm never up for more and more regulations but this is probably a dumb move on their part, the best education comes from a bss examiner pointing out issues, it's not that big an expense when boating is concerned.
  10. When I saw the topic 'On yer bike' I though this was another thorpe island thread......
  11. Off to an alternate aquasphere maybe.
  12. So whos going to buy one to see how much water it displaces, the only real to find out.
  13. We had a local guy do a repair on our roof, he had payment problems too, took ages to get him to tell us what we owed him despite trying, I think the problem is drinking in the same pub..... It's always a good thing to drink in the pub all the good local tradesmen drink in.
  14. I like a dark sky when I'm on the boat so I've painted a 1000 watt spotlight black so I can shine it from the roof to make it darker, don't moor beside me or your lunar panel won't work at all!
  15. Going back to the thing about Peachments in brundall, I have just recieved a very helpful email from Steve Aldridge of Peachments in reply to one I sent yesterday afternoon, so I shall be popping in friday afternoon to part with some cash.
  16. Woohoo it works! Doesn't look too out of place either, the temps shown are a couple hours after engines running.
  17. I like high winds, I have a woodburner at home and a chainsaw.......
  18. I used the contact form on the lofrans website to enquire about windlass parts and was refferred to peachments automatically, to their credit I had a follow up email from peachments very soon afterwards and very helpful. In regards to the "any boat less than £25k not worth getting up for" I can see some truth in that, when I was selling Leo Magill the plan B was to go to a brokerage, I'd looked around NYA at brundall and concluded Leo would be totally belittled and overlooked beside all the gin palaces there so the backup plan was to head for the aforementioned hairy monster at wayford where it would fit in better, if a broker generally aims for the higher end of the market the lower spenders won't look there in the first place so will just clog mooring spaces, as it was I sold Leo private in the timescale required so got to spend what the broker would have charged..... As for emails that never get replied to, Grrrrrr! Better to pick up the phone.
  19. Ta for that, I'll set the alarm limit at 30 degrees and see how it goes, now added engine bay temp to the display as the main circuit will be in the engine bay and there's a digital temp sensor on it for the cold junction temps so the input is already there to be used, always interesting to see how hot the intake air is as it shows if the ventilation is up to the job.
  20. How hot is too hot? I have to repack my stern glands and have never done it before, I know they shouldn't run too hot when done but how hot is normal for a 20knot boat with water injected glands? I'm making a system to monitor my raw water pump temps (to check for flow, I'm guessing they'll get hot pretty quick with no flow) and as it can take 4 thermocouples am going to monitor stern gland temps too, just don't know what temp to program an alarm for, currently have 50 degrees C as a test setting and green digits go red when they pass that figure but a rough guide would be helpful, always had outdrives before.
  21. Steel developments also do 4 blade props for most outboards, make quite a difference in manouvering thrust.
  22. Turn it on the ropes using the current to help, easily done if you start the right end, if not on the main river still not dificult to do.
  23. Marine16 is cheap, about a tenner for enough bug killer to treat 1000 (or is it 2000?) litres, give a good overdose to make sure, breaks the sludge down too if present, it did very well in the PBO test, I tend to use their diesel fuel complete as it stabilises fuel that's hanging around for a while.
  24. Blimey you're a bit OCD about how you clear up after your dog! I just use a bag and bin it....
