  1. It's happened on the gt.ouse and tributaries before and was put down to eastern europeans, I think it is just about cheap food rather than catching a delicacy. Such a shame to see otters caught in it, the gt.ouse one also caught a couple of young otters that drowned in the net and was found when unwrapped from a boat propellor.
  2. While looking up info about electrical interference I found a rake of stuff about chinese electronics with components that were in the test samples bridged with wire and chokes filled with nothing more than a loop of wire and a lump of concrete to make the weight up, all CE approved as the test samples were done right, also when looking at a clutch problem on a chinese honda rip-off bike spotted that where the japs use a proper kickstart stop mechanism the chinese version had two gear teeth welded together (by a passing pidgeon) instead. Quite a few uk businesses have switched back to uk/eu suppliers after getting a lovely sample batch of components and ending up paying for half a million shoddy or scrap items when the main order is done. They are currently just in it for the cash, they have no extra expertise to add to an existing good product, they just want to make something cheaper that looks like a good product, I would certainly avoid as false economy but thats my choice. In time they may get better.
  3. I have a 4hp tohatsu and it is pretty much a re-badged mariner, and just to mix it up some more a lot of mariners were made by yamaha, it certainly seems to share a lot of characteristics with my old yamaha motor. Honda do make superb stuff nowadays but way overpriced, back in the 70's/80's it stood for Had One Never Doit Again, with camshafts made from chocolate and camchain tensioners made from butter......
  4. We have a polyurethane tank liner and a filter inline with a fountain tap for drinking, the filter is overdue changing by 2 years, we fill from the riverside hoses but let them run till cold before putting in the tank, in the tank is a mesh sock filled with impregnated ceramic beads that keep the water good and clear of nasties and use no tabs of any kind, see link for info. http://www.hovercraftconsultants.co.uk/products/asp/prodtype.asp?prodtype=61&ph=cat&keywords=&recor=&SearchFor=&PT_ID=&PT_MasterCategory=n Still living to tell the tale (I think)
  5. When I've had issues I've always been given the offer of a tow by someone and given a few tows to others myself when they have had problems, there are lots of folk around still willing to help out someone in need, it makes for good manouvering practice too.
  6. I would imagine if you turned up and offered to refloat and remove they'd be happy for you to take it away. Just hire a bouncy castle for the weekend, chuck it in the cabin and inflate it, it'd soon float enough to move it.
  7. Splicing braid on braid is no problem with a hollow needle type fid and gives a very neat eye splice that can be snugged up on a cleat and loosened when needed but will still suspend your boat when you put a load on it.
  8. The original link doesn't actually say whay it's made of, nylon/polyester/terylene/polypropylene all have different characteristics in use, that would put me off them. I've used boatropes.co.uk a few times and had good deals and samples sent out.
  9. No drinking till the sun is over the yardarm, but on a cold day the yardarm will be much lower.....
  10. Not something I would be tempted to go for but if others want to then go for it, we were not born in clothes, my dog doesn't wear clothes or get embarrased, it's always a shame when someone has to complain about something that is completely optional, as said before you don't have to look, but I would!
  11. Thats not a shock for the peterboro area, not many english speakers around there now.
  12. Just got this email to follow up yesterdays, we need a system like this on the broads.... Afternoon all Thank you for such a fantastic response after our recovery of stolen property – I have just spoken to the team collating all the items – early next week I should have more details and can then cross match with what you are telling me If you make contact please let me have details of any engine and if you have a crime number I need that too I believe the thefts I reported yesterday from the Wilberton area some items have now been recovered to the rightful owners which is brilliant news. We are hopeful that more will be reunited in next week. Thank you all and have a lovely safe weekend Carol Carol Aston Crime Prevention Officer Covering Northern Sector Peterborough Cambridgeshire Constabulary DD Tel: 01733 42(4417) M: 7110192/07736342333 Email: carol.aston@cambs.pnn.police.uk Address: Community Intervention Team, Bayard Place 4th Floor, Broadway, Peterborough PE1 1FZ – part of the Safer Peterborough Partnership Please note that my office hours are Tuesday to Friday 9.30am – 5.30pm
  13. Of course sometimes the police just get lucky, the following is boatwatch message I just recieved from cambs. plod. Afternoon all Overnight 1st June theft of outboard engines from Twentypence Marina in Wilburton 1 Honda 15 horsepower serial 1007852 1 Yamaha FT9 serial 400569/S 1 Honda R type serial 1002788 If anyone in local area saw anything suspicious please get in touch Last night in Bretton Peterborough – officers stopped a vehicle driving as rear number plate hanging off and ended up arresting four males on suspicious of having stolen property in the vehicle – a search of a property they were staying at recovered a lot of stolen property including possibly 10 outboard engines Police are trying to identify the engines – if you have lost one and didn’t report it or lost one and did not know the serial number but there are marks that could help identify the engine please get in touch with me so I can try and help reunite these engines with rightful owners. My guess is that they would only have been stolen in last 6-8 weeks Thanks all Carol Carol Aston Crime Prevention Officer Covering Northern Sector Peterborough Cambridgeshire Constabulary DD Tel: 01733 42(4417) M: 7110192/07736342333 Email: carol.aston@cambs.pnn.police.uk Address: Community Intervention Team, Bayard Place 4th Floor, Broadway, Peterborough PE1 1FZ – part of the Safer Peterborough Partnership As for multitasking men Wildfuzz, I can do fat, drunk, bald, and stupid all at once! Beat that!
  14. Go north, the south is horrible! Honest! Thats why I couldn't wait to get back down past yarmouth last week after 3 days oop norf during half term week... I will echo the bit about hardly mill, go when it's open and you will get a great full tour from the guy that knows it inside out and the view from the top.
  15. It would have fitted through but they didn't give it enough throttle or run up..... They all fit if you hit it fast enough.
  16. Theres no reason not to stop as it is, the ship is a good pub with good food and does have some mooring space (for the brave), the last I heard the LN was on hold till the roofers turn up and sort out the leaks, no point fitting out a non-weatherproof building.
  17. We spoke to a couple that made an offer on the berney that I believe was accepted till they found out it didn't include the land attached just the pub itself so way overpriced, the people in question have 2 other pubs that are doing fine so have a clue how to make a pub work. It's largely down to the greed of the property owner which is why I avoid his other pub and take my cash elsewhere. I have moved your post to what I think is the correct topic. Regards Alan
  18. Nothing worse than getting picked up by the fuzz! Very painful indeed.
  19. You probably hit the eastern european chap trying to catch it for lunch....
  20. As long as they don't flap loudly in the wind!
  21. An alarm with a pound of semtex in the bilge would be a good plan, I'm sure everyone on here would have a whip round to buy you a new boat when the b'stards went boom.
  22. Watched 5 mins of it, got bored rigid and channel hopped. Cruising and watching someone else cruise is just not the same.
  23. So where does a single engine boat with an auxilary outboard stand? Maybe sailboats with more than one sail should pay extra......
  24. I think there are some nasty stakes under there, not a corner to shortcut under any circumstances.
  25. Surely a sailing wherry already has a reduction by not having an engine and being on a different toll scale.
