  1. A helpful policeman I knew who had visited us because I reported the theft, I was concerned that 10 very sharp knives were out there somewhere. He brought some knives that had not been claimed, a nice gesture but Stuart never used them in the trade they were regarded as spoons (they would not take or keep an edge). No he never replaced then but managed to get some cheaper knives that did the job. As you know a blunt knife is a dangerous tool, I always keep mine sharp like my chisels. Regards Alan
  2. Hello Ian, When our eldest son was at catering college his set of Global knives (built up from Birthday and Christmas presents) was stolen out of his car on the one occasion that he left them in the car overnight. Regards Alan
  3. Hello Karen, Welcome to the forum. You will find that the Broads based syndicate boats operate differently from each other with regards to contracts, payments, sinking funds etc. As already stated most syndicates offer bedding, you do have to provide duvet covers and pillows cases, towels & tea towels. Some will include all cleaning materials, toilet & kitchen rolls etc. Most include life jackets and other safety equipment. Before making a decision always check out the contracts you will have to sign. if there is an option to buy only two weeks allocation it might be an idea if you are still working or take other holidays. If you need any advice by all means contact me. Regards Alan Chairman & Trustee Ranworth Breeze Boat Syndicate
  4. Tingdene is open but the office is locked again, it is providing services via phone.
  5. Speaking to one of our local owners yesterday evening a couple of hire companies are advising hirers that have hired for two weeks that they should return their boats by the end of this week. Regards Alan
  6. Hello Jean, The way I see it is that it refers to holidays and from the Broads Authorities view point this must mean holidays from hire companies. With regards to private boats and syndicate boats in my view we come into the second home rulings hence my cancelling this week and three other owners allocations including mine. Norfolk & Suffolk are low risk areas and we should accept the latest rulings and stay away until we are told likewise. Regards Alan
  7. Hello Mark, met two of our new owners who should have started their allocation yester an in a fortnights time sadly we all went back home yesterday. During the training I mentioned that although the speed limit was 6 mph near your mooring that I believe that the Broads Authority should reduce this down to 5 mph because of the boats moored ion the riverside. I suggest to all our owners that they should go at the lower speed. When I left the boat in the late afternoon, I mothballed the boat, put extra electric on the meter and turned off all the breakers other than the fridge and the battery charger and turned off the gas. I have cancelled the AGM in late November, paid all local traders, I have lost my November allocation and the last allocation in the first week in December will be dependant if the lockdown is lifted, the same can be said regarding the AGM. Stay safe out there. Regards Alan
  8. I did not see much activity at the fuel station when we went passed yesterday, our two new owners practised port side mooring at the two times we went past and we only saw two other boats on the river between Brundall and Norwich.

  10. Good morning all, Breydon Water is currently closed to hire craft due to adverse weather conditions created by the high winds and rising tide. Broads Authority Rangers are currently on-site to prevent vessels crossing. We will review the closure once high tide has passed (10.34am). Thank you for your cooperation. 11. Hello Pinto, we have had tube heaters on both side of our engine for many years now and like yourself they are operated on a frost stat. Our engine bay insulated covers and carpets are left in place. At the end of the season (now earlier than planned) the boat is winterised, lifted and ready for its winter service. Regards Alan
  12. Helen I would check with the Broom fuel station to see when they are going to be around, they will prioritise their own hire craft. Regards Alan
  13. As a boating forum the latest rules that apply to us are listed in the section 11. 11. Travel You should avoid all non-essential travel by private or public transport. Essential travel includes, but is not limited to essential shopping travelling to work where your workplace is open or you cannot work from home travelling to education and for caring responsibilities hospital GP and other medical appointments or visits where you have had an accident or are concerned about your health. If you need to travel we encourage you to reduce the number of journeys you make, walk or cycle where possible, or to plan ahead and avoid busy times and routes on public transport. This will allow you to practise social distancing while you travel. Overnight stays and holidays away from primary residences will not be allowed- including holidays in the UK and abroad. This includes staying in a second home, if you own one, or staying with anyone you do not live with or are in a support bubble with. There are specific exceptions, for example if you need to stay away from home (including in a second home) for work purposes. You must not travel if you are experiencing any coronavirus symptoms, are self-isolating as a result of coronavirus symptoms, are sharing a household or support bubble with somebody with symptoms, or have been told to self-isolate after being contacted by NHS Test and Trace.
  14. Hi John, I would use an hairdryer on the lowest setting.
  15. Thank you Grendel, I have never used the items you list above, but I can appreciate that they would be suitable to people that do not have soldering skills. I am like you I would prefer to solder them with an iron. Back in the day we all used copper irons of various sizes heated in a gas ring with stands and a hood. These days I use Antex soldering irons including their gas iron for situations with no electric. With MM's current application I would be inclined to strip the insulation of both wires but first put some heat shrink on one end, twist the cables together (being they are thin) and solder them using a cleaned and tinned iron, as already stated multicore solder is the best option these days for general soldering. When the joint has cooled pull over the shrink sleeving and apply moderate heat. Regards Alan
  16. If you look on facebook there is a product that incorporates heatsrink tubing and a means of soldering the wires together, all that is needed is a heat source to shrink the tubing and melt solder (on the advert they use a candle as the heat source). Regards Alan
  17. Good afternoon all, From 1 November our facilities at Great Yarmouth Yacht Station, Norwich Yacht Station and Reedham Quay will be closing for the winter as the sites revert to control of the respective local councils. This means that there will be no mooring at the Yacht Stations and facilities such as toilets, showers, pump-outs, electric charging posts and water points will be closed. Other water and electric points managed by the Authority will remain open (please note that electric posts may trip out with high tides, if boaters find a post that is not operational please let us know using the details below and we will fix it). Our full-time and summer seasonal Broads Rangers will be continuing patrols and there will be an increased presence on the water until the end of November compared to a regular year. Broads Control, supported by our Breydon Rangers, will also be available for tide and lower Bure bridge clearance information through November. Boaters can contact Broads Control for this information and other assistance on 01603 756056 or Broads.Control@broads-authority.gov.uk seven days a week between the hours of 9am – 5pm. In case of emergency please contact the emergency services on 999. With the onset of winter and increased likelihood of adverse weather conditions, we are encouraging boaters to wear life jackets, plan their journey ahead and ensure they reach their destination before darkness falls. For more safety advice please see our website and social media feeds. If you have any questions please get in touch using our contact form or speak to Broads Control using the details provided above. 19. Take care Ian, do not watch too much TV, try to keep on the move and keep those oxygen levels up. Regards Alan
  20. Maybe Whitlingham would be better suited as a Norwich basin for boating visitors and a good base for liveaboards, rather than what it is used for at the moment.

  22. The saying iI thought was red sky at night sailors delight, red sky in the morning fisherman warning. There are several variations:- Red sky at night, sailors' delight. Red sky at morning, sailors' warning. Another version uses the word "shepherds": Red sky at night, shepherds' delight. Red sky in the morning, shepherds' warning. Another version uses "pink" in place of "red": Pink sky at night, sailors' delight. Pink sky in the morning, sailors take warning. Another version uses "forlorn" in place of "warning": Red sky at night, sailors' delight. Red sky in the morn', sailors' forlorn. Regards Alan
