  1. I can never understand why these people never put their hands up and say sorry. I would always admit a mistake by one of my staff and get it put right promptly, usually followed by flowers or wine. It is the only way to maintain a hard earned reputation. A recommendation is worth a hundred pounds of advertising.
  2. Spot on with your original instincts Griff. I have lost count of the number of these 'wet floors' I have looked at over the years. Thermal cameras are great, and hideously expensive ( 3k+ ) but are useless on timber floors. I used to charge £150 for the same service and always advised the owners to have all the supply and waste pipes inspected. When a plumber reported that there were no leaks my response was, there is, you just haven't found it. A water leak will spread the full extent of a solid floor and any abutting areas. The worst one I found was identical, detatched bath waste. missed on 6 visits by British Gas. The drying time for the concrete beneath the timber floor will be around six months but the bath area will be quicker with a dehumidifier. Water on the loose in a house is a nightmare.
  3. As a way of keeping contact with the grandchildren, Grandad has acquired an Elf to get up to mischief. Apparently the antics are supposed to be Christmassy, not with this Grandad they won't be . Every other day I post them a video or photo, apparently they are eagerly anticipated. I now have to do this until 2nd December when Elfy will go to a new home. This could get messy and Grandad could be in trouble VID_20201121_125116.mp4
  4. Then why even bring it up in a discussion of his 7th world title. Just a little bit sad… .
  5. Matron and the grandchildren say the lights need to be switched on on the 1st. 1st January it is then.
  6. Have the first shower. Seriously though, the tanks are very small in comparison to one you would have at home, mine is 35 litres and is not adequate for two luxury showers in a row, especially if Matron washes her hair. One answer is for one of you to shower when under way so the cylinder has chance to reheat before you moor or plug into shorepower if the boat has an immersion heater.
  7. I have a 2m surveyors rod, also known as a surveyors rule. My 2m surveyors rule is now sanctioned by the government. Matron won't let me take it to Tesco as I would shout at anyone who came too close.
  8. I can unlock my twin brothers phone 50% of the time with my finger print and 90% of the time with facial recognition. Now he never leaves it laying around.
  9. Japanese Knotweed is less of a problem in selling a house now. A spraying regime will remove it, at a cost of around 4k with a guarantee. The price is dropping as more companies gear up to treat it. Building societies are less adverse to it now and regard it as a defect much like any other. Victorian plant collectors have a lot to answer for.

    Implications

How many of us renewed our mooring agreements on the 1st April in the full knowledge that access would not be available.
  11. Exceptions are allowed for caring duties and obviously if someone's safety is in doubt. Might be worth a call to his local authority to seek advice.
  12. Live and learn, My group of friends and family have a rule that the race isn't mentioned until the Monday, it took a lot of verbal abuse aimed at a couple before it was properly understood.
  13. I have learnt not to listen to the news or check the forum on such days, it happened last year. Having now watched the earlier recording, it is a very good race.
  14. Without a doubt, so it will still be hand cleaning at least. The face and space part might be less of an issue depending on how quickly mass vaccination can be achieved. The problem initially will be getting those who haven't been vaccinated to continue with precautions and not claiming they have had the jab, for that reason I suspect masks are with us for a while.
  15. We inherited a 3 year old grandson 8 years ago, we refer to him as our ready made. It started out as grandad Mark and Nana Pauline, he happily dropped the names after a month.
  16. Half the problem is so many government departments have a finger in the water (pie) DFRA, EA , DMCS. DMCS latest updates include the percentage of fat allowed in advertising. What on earth do they know about boating. The EA at least have a number of rivers they manage for boaters however they were saying no pleasure boating and no maintenance. Boaters need their own department but we would end up with just one Civil Servant named Cyril working out of a broom cupboard. Realistically boaters are very low down anyones list of priorities.
  17. Other souces apart from Age Uk, dated early June, are available as I am sure you are aware. 77% of Covid deaths are in the over 75 age range, BBC 6th November. As you will know, given your background, statistics can and are regularly manipulated for many reasons. As the OP, I find it disappointing this particular thread has been dragged away from its very specific intention. I will leave it there.
  18. I found the numbers I quoted from a number of very recent publications, your is from a report published early June, based on figures compiled during May, If you doubt my figures feel free to research a wider number of sources supplying up to date figures.
  19. A shop within a store must be an essential business, Garden centres are allowed to be open and if their clothing section is within the main body of the store they can continue to sell. Where non essential departments are in a segregated area, different floor or building, they have to close the area off. Probably a better solution than Wales tried with clingfilm.
  20. Late next year might be realistic for going abroad, 50 million doses this year, 1.3 billion next year from this one but others are not far behind.
  21. Some very good news on a vaccine at 1pm, fingers crossed it can be replicated in other trials. 90% effective according to testing. That is promising. Someone has turned the light on at the end of the tunnel. What will be be " discussing" next year, hopefully more mundane topics.
  22. Carpet shops are not allowed to open, no doubt they will be closed tomorrow after a visit from the local council. We had a barber in my area was adamant he would stay open, he lasted a day before he was closed by the lical authority and the landlord changed the locks.
  23. The death rate for over 75 males is 11% to 13% according to a number of sources.
  24. The whole reason we have lockdown 2 is because a sizeable minority completely ignored Hands, Face, Space. I do get that going out on your own boat or even working on it is not a high risk action. Unfortunately we have all been penalized because some sections of society can't follow the basics.
