  1. I wish that I had never made a mistake before. It was eight years ago! Were they briefed on the rules and dangers by the hire yard. It is hard to see if the prop is turning when taking the dog out, it looks like the water churning is the dogs frantic paddling. Most of the time they are travelling at a sensible speed just having fun. Today they would have been briefed about the dingy and life-jackets. They would have probably been offered one for the mutt as well. When we went in 1985 we were given no instruction on crossing Breydon almost with disastrous consequences. I know a lot more now and still make the odd mistake, although I do wear my life-jacket most of the time. Relax and chill. Enjoy the broads, let us stop this public vilifying. L&Ks to all
  2. Maxwellian Swallow
  3. Boat works does lots of videos. give this a try.
  4. Had you been watching Porkies before that episode Griff?
  5. Were the early ones get the boat ready to leave the mooring, then start the engine, check it is running ok and leave the mooring or running it at the mooring to provide water and heating etc?
  6. There are a few boats with a low airdraft. We got through last year on Sweet Freedom from Freedom Boats and I believe that Maffetts Merlin is also good at getting through, but both of these are from the Southern Broads. One of the Moonlight boats went through at the same time as us. There are others but at times very little will get through. Sweet Freedom showed 6' 3" on the boat and the Pilot had it down as the same.
  7. I have hired from four yards in my time on the broads and one in Scotland. The one in Scotland, Maffetts and Freedom were excellent. They are assessing your ability and knowledge as they take you out. I have no doubt if you show you are not ready they will carry on showing you, indeed that is what Maffetts said they do. HW was back in the mid 80's and was very poor, so not really relevant today. Richardsons seem to have a set trial, down the river, turn round, stern moor and off. I think they do a side moor if you have not been before. Not sure what they do if you have not displayed competence. i have been on boats quite a bit and always plan and read up well in advance. I think the real problem is the people that give no thought to what can go wrong. It does not mean that they are bad people it is just they way they are. The yards need to recognise this and educate.
  8. I thought that John built Merlin when he was an apprentice.
  9. Tell me this, if woodies were so good where is the Ark? Now if it had been made from Fibreglass! Just kidding. My favourite boat Swallow is a woodie.
  10. Welcome from me too. Looks lovely.
  11. Figure of eight with a couple of turns. At least she remembered. I see some tied up covering all of the mooring post
  12. Isn't it amazing that in life for many of us, it is always someone else's fault. I drive approx 30,000 to 35,000 miles per year and often use Cruise Control. The main thing is to always drive so that you are in control of the car for any given circumstances. Be alert and considerate. The world always needs more "lerts"
  13. I think Neil (speedtriple) has hired her before.
  14. Does Andy at Freedom (Kingfisher) do them?
  15. Lovely two berths from Maffetts with Merlin and Swallow. You need to treat them nicely though, don't want anyone roughing them up.
  16. Not sure it is. Was lovely though. My knowledge of cake and breakfast places on the Broads is a real weight problem.
