BroadAmbition
I suppose it does! What I actually meant to portray of course was thanks for letting us know Griff 2
grendel
Well, nothing will get done tonight as I have just walked in the door, an accident just outside canterbury held me up for an hour and a half, so stopped off at the chippie for tea.
grendel
A little update none the less, the final part of a present from Griff arrived today, I now have the same varnish turps and brushes used in the glorious finish that Broad Ambition sports, I have the full application instructions, so will be starting off with the stern of the model, 6 coats - as per the real thing. 1
grendel
so today, after shopping (and christmas shopping) during which I purchased a set of plastic shot glasses (for mixing) it was down to the first layer of the varnish - step one 25% varnish - 75% turpentine (ooh lovely pine fresh smell) I mixed up a tiny amount 9ml turps, 3ml varnish (I have some syringe bodies that make this easy) and yes you guessed it - way more than I needed, no matter, some of the woodwork on model #1 got a coat too (and I still had some left over) anyhow - now to leave for 24 hours to dry (indoors at 21 degrees - the workshop has warmed up to 11 deg from 6 deg overnight).
grendel
so today, after flatting back with extra fine wire wool, a quick wipe with turps on a rag to clean and then it was time for step 2 50% turps, 50% varnish 3
grendel
As well as the varnishing I have still been progressing the side deck supports.
grendel
step 3 of the varnishing process, surface de nibbed with finest wire wool, cleaned with a turps soaked rag, and then a coat of 75% varnish, 25% turps mixed (4cc in total) painted on.
grendel
step 4 - denibbed and another 25% turps, 75% varnish layer.

Shame on you Griff shame on you , still an extra coat is no problem at all
grendel
yes to my shame he did, but I forgot were I was and repeated a step, its not Griffs fault, all mine. but I do have to say its starting to look really nice.
BrundallNavy
I do 6 coats of 50-50 before rubbing back then another 4 to 6 coats of neat varnish rubbing down between every other coat, I also use good quality foam brushes and throw away after use as I don’t think you can always clean a brush successfully. grendel
step 5 a light rub down with 400 grit sandpaper, cleaned off with turps on a rag, then 5cc mixed up 20% turps, 80% varnish, and applied.
grendel
step 6 after de nibbing again with 400 grit paper, it was 100% varnish this time. the reflection of the flash is getting smaller and less diffuse, indicating the finish getting smoother, I can see things reflected in the surface now, whether this gets more coats will depend upon the finish once it has dried.
grendel
that white line smudge on the last picture is actually the reflection of the angle poise magnifier lamp I was using to light up the work area. my thanks go to Griff for divulging the secret of the 6 steps to achieve the finish that Broad Ambition boasts. JanetAnne
The ironic thing about varnish is that the better you get the finish the harder it is to photograph! That is starting to look really special though 1
Baitrunner
By the looks of that finish Griff is going to have to up his game!!!!
grendel
now its dry I am really pleased with the finish, there are a couple of small pits into the finish, so another coat will be applied once this has properly dried out
