I am not, nor ever shall be, in the habit of reporting misdemeanours unless they are adversely affecting me or other people. As the moorings were virtually empty being November, no harm was being done. If we all went off reporting every little thing to the BA, they would be spending too much time checking things out unnecessarily. I am sure you would agree with that Ricardo. I just used the event as an example of ‘rule bending’.

Fully agree with that , BA have enough to do , it is a fact though that a few do spend a lot of time reporting even the minutest thing then BA presumably follow it up , I prefer the live and let live approach rather than the the " oh look someone doing something wrong , where's my phone " approach .

If people were more reasonable on both sides then all of this wouldn't happen at all and BA could get on with the work they need to .

Wise words and ones that should be more widely applied.

Look can I try and explain something , if I quote someone it so that they know exactly to what I am referring and to who I am talking to , that's the whole reason for the quote section surely , otherwise things could get really confusing with people having to ask as to what a poster is referring to and to who they were addressing it to .

If I could be bothered to look I think I would find pretty much the same thing , but thank you for bringing it to my attention , however I will be still using the forum as I believe it was set up regarding the quotation box , as I don't believe that there is or could be any harm in that and believe that less confusion would occur .

Once again thanks for bringing this issue to my attention , even if it was by quoting me .

I am certain that I have easily been quoted as many if not more times than that, and yes Ricardo has contributed a number of those. I dont see that as baiting, I see it as someone being kind enough to make sure that he knows which part of my post his answer refers.

So please can we all just accept that others see things differently than we do and everyone give a bit of leeway, when reading others posts, and see the good side rather than assuming the bad.

Here here, this bickering is 'annoying' me and its not what this forum is about. It's not fair on the mods or those that don't wish to be mods but know when it's going out of line...

It is so easy to take things the wrong way, and it's also very difficult to know if one is taking things the wrong way or if you have it the right way.

I have fallen foul of this myself although I did not raise it as an issue I found the need to distance from posting much a year or two back as with some regularity when I posted something I was getting a reply from one member, usually offering their viewpoint differing from mine.  Did we just have clashing personalities? had i offended this person leading them to find an argument with anything I had to say? or was I just being paranoid? I dunno.

The member in my case does not seem to post on here now although I do still see their avatar on FB pages.

As with real life the cyber world can be hard for all to socialise together in harmony.  I would however say that phrases like 'play nicely people' (not used in this thread) are likely to do as much to calm people's tempers as a liverpudlian with a full scouse accent saying 'calm it down, calm it down'!

Mark, wise words but, in my humble opinion, just two people made unwise, uncalled for comments and hey presto the whole darned thread turned sour! There are a few folk who seem to delight in being pointlessly confrontational, even abrasive, well, there is an easy solution to that one,  just don't rise to it. Please, let now be the turning point.

I don't know that it's worth this much discussion, is it? After all, the article says that he will be leaving the Broads, sailing off into the French canal system and paying his way by writing of his travels. In which case he will be following hundreds of others, who have all tried to do the same with more or less success.

"Less" success means they all end up languishing out on the canal bank somewhere in the south of France, where the sun is shining but the money - and perhaps the energy - have run out. There are several areas where the canal banks run close to the Mediterranean beaches, that are known by the local boatyards as the land of broken dreams.

I did chuckle once when we passed Miles while out on a hire boat ... and he waved to us! There must be a heart behind that sometimes gruff and unshaven exterior! Merry Christmas to Miles wherever he might have spent this week. :default_xmas6:

Susie has just reminded me of when we used to cruise along the canal near the beaches, and there were rows of little old beaten up yachts, with no rigging, bicycles and other stuff all strewn on the bank, but with people living in them, all the same.

She always imagined some-one's mother, at a cocktail party in Tunbridge Wells, being asked :

"How is your son Johnny getting on, by the way?"

"Oh, he's fine - he's got his yacht in the South of France now, you know!"

There is a certain irony that this topic is being discussed on three Broads forums. Elsewhere it has received 657 views and 5 replies to date. Here 820 views and 37 replies. Miles own forum, no replies.

They say the grass is always greener on the other side, I don't see Miles rushing off to France anytime soon. The hire boats tend to be larger and heavier!!

I have to say the last time I saw that yacht at Stalham Staithe the rigging looked suspect. I think I would take it to France on the back of a truck. PS.  You will be hard pressed to manage on his quoted Broads budget in the Med.

If he wants to write a book about French canals, then the standard has been set!

Those of us who work on the waterways reckon this book is the best. A sort of French version of "Black sailed traders" if you like. I see it is still available on Amazon and I can highly recommend it.

Hugh McKnight is a very likeable man who I met several times, as Crown Blue Line always looked after his boat at their bases in winter, wherever he was in France. He was one of the directors of the original Blue Line, who came across with the Wilds Caribbeans and Bermudas and thus introduced the French to pleasure boating on inland waterways, which they were not doing until then.

The arrival of Blue Line is still considered today, to have saved the Canal du Midi from falling into disuse in the 1970s. A lesson for the Broads perhaps, that waterways have to be commercial?

I think that I can pre-date you by about ten years. This was my "bible" when Judith and I were thinking of taking our Berwick through. The pictures of areas now largely built over are amazing.20171229_094931.thumb.jpg.c4b9c5ee182dcfae6898feebcc534915.jpg

PS. It was unfortunately a dream not to be realised!

The anchor became fouled on a generous salary, pension, fat expense account and two company fully expensed cars. Not to mention my two sons schooling and before you know it the years have slipped away.

Without wishing to resurrect the thread I’d just like to say thanks to Vaughn and Chris B for mentioning the books that they enjoyed reading .After a googling session I tracked down copies of both books and they’re now in my possession and I’m looking forward to some New Year’s reading .

Regards
