We always have a steak and kidney Fray Bentos  in the boat pantry …. yummmmmm

Love a Fray Bentos. Is it described as a pie on the package?

They clearly don't have a bottom so can't be a pie.

I feel a claim for a PPI (pretend pie infiltration) miss selling coming on.

What is one called that has a lattice top ? 😁

Judging by the responses, I’d call one of those a lattice topped pie, just as long as it has a pastry bottom!

Haven't had one of those for about forty four years.  Might have to buy one to remind myself why I haven’t had one for sooooooooo long!

The blurb on their website says pie but doesn’t say its a pie on the top of the tin as far as I can see. I didn’t realise there were so many different flavours nowadays.

Steak and Kidney Pie = Pastry on top and bottom

Steak and Kidney Pudding = Pastry on top and bottom

So exactly the same thing but one is SERVED UPSIDE DOWN

If I bung an apple pie on a plate and then put another one next to it but upside down does one become a pudding?

It seems to me that someone needs to urgently look into this.

It's only a pudding when it's a Suet pudding mix.

So, according to Tesco (with my highlighting)

"With our Atora Vegetable Shredded Suet, you'll make flaky pies and heart-warming casseroles that friends and family will love"

Pastry can be made with flour, fat and water. Suet is the fat. Which means Suet pudding is made from pastry. QED

Also - Delia says its a pastry

If Delia says its pastry - then its pastry

Also, where do we all stand on flaky v shortcrust pastry on Mince Pies?

This could go on and on.

I'm not wrong. Almost 50 years as a Chef

Taught by the best,French ,English and European. Where as she is self taught.

Yes suet is infact made from shredded beef fat and can be made from shredded vegetable fat. Then to make the paste half suet to self raising flour,a pinch of salt lined pudding basin, filled with steak& kidney mix together with a rich gravy a little 🌿 herbs top with suet lid.Cover with paper lid ,foil. If as Traditional cooked from raw steam for about 3 hours on a rolling boil.

Mincepies: Sweet pastry is perhaps the best or shortcrust.

No, wrong!

Pie is baked, but a Steak and Kidney pudding is steamed.

And black pudding has no pastry and is fried.

No wonder the world is such a mess.

I defer to the cheffy knowledge of my peers with regards to pies/pudding.

Just in. Case you were wondering,  my total consumption to date is 6 mince pies.

If you stay consuming at this rate next year's Broads cruise should be in a Viking Long Boat to work those calories off .

Kindest Regards Marge and Parge

Six pies singular or boxes?  I’ll admit to commencing my mince pie consumption about a month ago, but I’m fairly certain that I’m currently on my 6th box.

Its definitely a cake, something in the name gives it away :default_biggrin:

I adore them and can't just have the one. How do you eat yours, eat one whole, bite in half or nibble around the edges until you're left with the chocolate orangy bit in the middle, yum? x
