There must be a very simple reason for the geese letting you walk through the field, now I wonder what that might be.............

    Baby Ducks

It’s probably the goose that guards the moorings and collects the fees - you didn’t pay did you?!!
  3. A word of warning on electric tailgates. When we bought a new car a few years ago, it had an electric tailgate which was something I had not seen before. I used to get a buzz from clicking it open as I was walking back to the car with a loaded supermarket trolley. One time I had been to the local farm shop before the supermarket. Did my trick of clicking the tailgate open and - all my veggies etc tumbled out! I don’t do it any more.............
  4. It is surely necessary for all private boat owners to have a reasonable working knowledge of the bye laws? I would also think that most long term hirers would want and benefit from the same but we can’t expect the majority of hirers to know very much more than the basics. I think that sums it up rather well. Although we put it different ways, I do believe we are all (well, mostly) singing from the same song sheet. As in -
  5. I will add to that, surely it is better to act earlier rather than at the last minute. Common sense?
  6. But that is exactly what I am saying! Common sense will tell you that you have to act to avoid collision.
  7. So we read, understand and abide strictly by the bye laws? Then a boat comes along with the helm doing what he/she thinks is the correct thing to do and no intention of giving way to anyone else. We’re ok because we know the bye laws so we keep going and, oh dear we’ve had a mishap! Never mind, we’re in the right so the damage to our boat will be taken care of. What about all the trauma of proving who is right, getting the boat fixed etc etc? Whereas, had we used common sense and held back realising there was a **** at the helm, all would be well. Sorry, for me it’s a no-brainer. Know the bye laws by all means and use them where appropriate but don’t give up on common sense, it can be very useful.
  8. Probably soon shut it and take production to Japan then!
  9. If anyone is interested, over in ‘t’other place’ JP has responded to some of the comments made following the EDP article.
  10. I rather feel that, if Robin’s ideas were taken up, landowners would see yet another excuse to try and increase lease prices. I’m sure they wouldn’t want to see the BA raking in mooring fees without getting their share!
  11. https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/politics/norfolk-suffolk-broads-moorings-closure-1-5903295 Interesting comments at the end of the article. A number of good points made.
  12. I’m one of those you mention (all three actually!) so I entirely agree with you. Trouble is I sometimes have difficulty remembering instructions when they are given, particularly if they are a bit confusing anyway. I suppose I am a bit like Mr Spock (not the ears I hasten to add) in that I am happier when things seem logical and so often they aren’t. I bet I’m not alone there.
  13. All very true but remember that there are some who never make a mistake and then there are those who are never wrong. There are also those who will never learn so really you can’t win!
  14. Indicators and flashing headlights, that’s the answer! Mind you, there are too many on the roads that forget they have indicators so that wouldn’t work. How about roundabouts? Drivers don’t always use those properly either. And there’s the rub, drivers have been taught the rules of the road and still don’t abide by them. How can someone who has stepped on a boat for the first time be expected to know all the rules and regulations when even those of us who have been on the water for years don’t really know them inside and out? The Broads is a leisure area, we all use the rivers etc for fun (with exceptions of course) so common sense has to apply. That common sense should tell us when there is a first-class p**t at the helm so we can apply caution, roll our eyes and smile sweetly. That’s my view anyway.
  15. Cheapskate! Rather than a massage from Morrison’s, you could at least have splashed out and got one from Waitrose on such an occasion.
  16. Owls using smartphones to hunt, whatever next!! I know we all use ‘smart’ technology for such a lot these days but owls?? Actually, that was a clever shot Ray. Especially on a smartphone. Well done!!
  17. Our toll equates to £1.33 per day (or £4.07 per day based on our usual number of days afloat per year). I reckon that’s still darn good value.
  18. It’s a good thing you are thick-skinned coolcat, you tell it as you want to! Now, more please.

    Rats

Yes, on our cars! We were away for 4/5 weeks on holiday in Australia and came back to find one car just wouldn’t start. We called the RAC who eventually established chewed wiring. The same thing happened to the other car on our next trip! This was around 15 years ago so I guess our attempts, whatever they were, to get rid of the little b*****s must have worked.
  20. Have you used that footpath from the playing field recently Paul? We tried to find it last October but there seemed to be work going on in that area and it wasn’t very evident. We ended up retracing our steps back across the playing field and down Mill Loke, the dogs didn’t complain anyway as they got a longer walk!
  21. Sounds good. I hope you manage to find a solo hire to your liking, do let us know what you manage to get. Was your previous boat on the Broads?
  22. Welcome to the forum Red. If you are interested in the southern Broads you may like to try Silverline (Brundall) and/or Freedom (Thorpe). I have a feeling they still hire out to solo boaters. Good luck with your search.
  23. Hi Terri and welcome to the forum. I feel it unlikely that anyone would be willing to hire a private boat out to you, I think our insurances would prohibit it. You may be lucky for someone to offer you a trip out with them in their boat - it’s a case of ‘watch this space’!
  24. Or, “isn’t it lovely to have such a wonderful view of a National Park from our penthouse!!”
