  1. Wrong MM - all the sailies need to know is that all stinky helms are idiots!
  2. Leftovers from the night before perhaps? Margherita or Spicy Pepperoni wrap - mmm!
  3. I think the same can be said for private rag and sticks. There are some who could easily give an indicatory signal to be helpful but prefer to ignore others on the river. They should all be like Poppy!
  4. I wish more sailies would do this, even an experienced stinky helm can be caught out.
  5. If you are going to live aboard for periods of time, you will need good storage areas. Wardrobes, cupboards, drawers etc. Seems to me so many boats these days lack decent storage.
  6. Would you not take a chance and moor at the new emergency mooring at Scare Gap for a short period? A Ranger coming along could only ask you why you were there and would have difficulty disproving that you had just sorted out your ‘emergency’. (Make sure you have a viable emergency story handy though! )
  7. That’s a cracking explanation from expilot, I think that needs to be ‘stored’ somewhere safely and rolled out whenever ‘that bridge’ needs explaining. Many years ago we hired Shimmering Light when it was a brand new boat. We had hired a forward drive from HW on the basis we wanted to get through the bridge. The airdraft needed was stated at 7ft, being a new boat the pilot was unsure of the clearance. He tried several times, gauging the possible clearance under the bridge, but to no avail. All credit to him, he really did try for us.
  8. No spirit of adventure! A sunny day can warm a boat up in no time (assuming it has reasonable sized windows) and a good heating system sorts out the evening and early morning chills. Empty rivers and moorings have a lot going for them. (A 9.5tog duvet is quite enough for me out of season and a 4.5tog otherwise.) We were moored in Fleet Dyke a few days ago when a hire boat arrived around 3pm. On went their heating immediately and it was on until late into the evening. Then on again first thing in the morning. We left and toddled slowly round South Walsham Broads, the heating was still on when we passed by again. Yes, the weather can be hit and miss but, as long as you cater for the bad stuff, there is so much to enjoy this time of the year - particularly the lack of anglers.
  9. I wonder what time low water is on the 31 November? Must look in the Broads Authority tides book.......
  10. Are you sure you don’t mean 31 March to 30 November??
  11. It might be worth googling that story Paul..............
  12. In 1982, never having been on a river boat before, we picked our boat up from Brundall and proceeded down the Yare and then the Chet. The following day we headed for Berney Arms and then crossed Breydon. During those 10 days we got up to West Somerton and then to Wroxham before returning south. I think Grendel is right, it’s all the social media coverage these days that puts people off crossing Breydon and that’s a shame. Follow the rules and it’s really quite straightforward.
  13. There still is a bridge at St Olaves! Once upon a time there was the Bridge Stores on the bridge, back in the good old days............
  14. I seem to remember a fish and chip shop in Stokesby too, or did I dream that one up?
  15. Must be a scam but at least we know who the perpetrator is!
  16. Hits the nail firmly on the head from a hirers point of view I reckon. A responsible hirer anyway. Well said SwanR.
  17. For all the reasons above, decidedly a no-no! Apart from the fact that we’re on it for much of the time between March and November, the poor boat needs a good rest over the winter.
  18. Definitely a few photos in that last lot Cap’n to put forward for the 2020 calendar. Is the sixth one down the one who tried to chat you up last night? Maybe you should have tried a bonio!
  19. I can’t even work out what is supposed to be in the dish! Garlic bread made with black bread could catch on though.........
  20. Now I understand why you’re getting those soulful looks! I’m afraid I’m boring, I like plain salted crisps to go with a half. Or a glass of wine. No ones going to get too tiddley boozing with you are they?!
  21. I have no idea but the little fella looks like he wants you to buy him a pint! (And a bag of beef flavour crisps too probably.)
