Well, over the years, we have all blamed Freddie Laker, the weather, the value of the pound, brexit, the BA and whoever else we have seen fit to along the way but I do sometimes wonder just how much the hire industry are to blame for their own downfall?

I have fitted a few of these now. For boat use they need some additional items to bring them up to spec (the exhaust silencer is not a sealed item, the diesel supply pipes are not to BSS and so on) which takes the shine off the initial saving. For a camper van they are more plug and play because the whole thing is 'outside' so the above is either not relevant or doesn't matter. This makes them very attractive. By the way, a 2kw unit will heat a coach built autosleeper or my pop top transit to 24 degrees in about 20 mins!

We have the internet. There must be single parent forums etc where such ideas could be suggested. My mum used to go off on over 70's trips with a coach load of people she had yet to make friends with. The Broads needs to work out a way to cater for all hirer's rather than just the easier to service ones. We all complain at pub closures and boat yards disappearing but without the maximum possible holiday income more will follow. Three canal boats mentioned above is a few grand not going into the local economy. That's half a year's wages for a young trainee in a boatyard.....

I remember a lady and her daughter arriving for a fortnights holiday. The lady was on crutches which obviously caused concern though her daughter, probably about 12, was very attentive and did a brilliant job of helping as needed. Anyway they immediately asked for life jacket s (always a good sign) and, with the help from some improvised steps, were soon onboard. It was a dream handover, they listed intently to everything and were keen to learn. They had never been on a boat before. Jimmy decided that he was happy to let the boat go out and so off they went. In the fortnight they had a whale of a time and managed everywhere, Hickling, coltishall, Geldeston and that boat came back without a scratch and cleaned to within an inch of its life. The point is ability can only be ascertained at the point of handover by the person charged with making that decision. If you are capable then you should be offered the hire irrespective of anything else

Just to add my bit. To know how much gas is left you need to weigh the bottle. Most bottles have a disc round the neck that gives its nett weight. So, for example, if you have one of the small bottles shown above and your bottle weighs 12kg empty and currently weighs 15kg you have three kg of gas left. It's not foolproof but is a very good guide. To weigh the bottles use fishing scales. They will hook under the handle nicely. The health and safety bit. Don't drop it!!!

A pair of marine plywood reinforcing panels cut to the profile of the deck and down to the hull below and then laminated into the aperture either side would give you a structure actually stronger than what you have now before cutting. Refinish the bonded in areas each side in gel coat (or sand and paint if the boat is already painted) and you'll have an access point that looks like it grew there.

Well that's the first epoxy sheath I have seen put on a wooden boat hull at the point of build rather than at the more desperate point of rot!

By the way, BSS technical at their head office in Milton Keynes are extremely helpful when you are trying to be compliant without destroying the very fabric of what you are in the process of restoring.

I volunteer to drive a dredger.

I suspect those engines running at a decent chat will move more silt than the BA do in a week. The mooring will soon be deep enough and Independance shaped once its in use.

I believe the daily limit goes once you have been here a while or reached a certain amount of posts or learnt one of those special handshakes or been initiated etc One of the chosen few will be along to explain it properly I am sure
