  1. We have the internet. There must be single parent forums etc where such ideas could be suggested. My mum used to go off on over 70's trips with a coach load of people she had yet to make friends with. The Broads needs to work out a way to cater for all hirer's rather than just the easier to service ones. We all complain at pub closures and boat yards disappearing but without the maximum possible holiday income more will follow. Three canal boats mentioned above is a few grand not going into the local economy. That's half a year's wages for a young trainee in a boatyard.....
  2. I remember a lady and her daughter arriving for a fortnights holiday. The lady was on crutches which obviously caused concern though her daughter, probably about 12, was very attentive and did a brilliant job of helping as needed. Anyway they immediately asked for life jacket s (always a good sign) and, with the help from some improvised steps, were soon onboard. It was a dream handover, they listed intently to everything and were keen to learn. They had never been on a boat before. Jimmy decided that he was happy to let the boat go out and so off they went. In the fortnight they had a whale of a time and managed everywhere, Hickling, coltishall, Geldeston and that boat came back without a scratch and cleaned to within an inch of its life. The point is ability can only be ascertained at the point of handover by the person charged with making that decision. If you are capable then you should be offered the hire irrespective of anything else
  3. Just to add my bit. To know how much gas is left you need to weigh the bottle. Most bottles have a disc round the neck that gives its nett weight. So, for example, if you have one of the small bottles shown above and your bottle weighs 12kg empty and currently weighs 15kg you have three kg of gas left. It's not foolproof but is a very good guide. To weigh the bottles use fishing scales. They will hook under the handle nicely. The health and safety bit. Don't drop it!!!
  4. I do hope that will be a private ceremony.
  5. Seeings as the film Independance Day was made in 1996 I think I will go with that. 1996 ltrs And if its 1776 litres..... ah well
  6. He never said anything about wanting it to float afterwards
  7. A pair of marine plywood reinforcing panels cut to the profile of the deck and down to the hull below and then laminated into the aperture either side would give you a structure actually stronger than what you have now before cutting. Refinish the bonded in areas each side in gel coat (or sand and paint if the boat is already painted) and you'll have an access point that looks like it grew there.
  8. You just never know what you are going to learn next on here!
  9. Well that's the first epoxy sheath I have seen put on a wooden boat hull at the point of build rather than at the more desperate point of rot!
  10. By the way, BSS technical at their head office in Milton Keynes are extremely helpful when you are trying to be compliant without destroying the very fabric of what you are in the process of restoring.
  11. The quiz is about to start peeps!
  12. Can I just mention that whilst we are all used to threads wandering off topic etc there has been more sh... crap talked about on this thread than the whole rest of the forum put together
  13. If Independence does have sea toilets I guess her mooring will need dredging after all, and frequently
  14. Ah sorry, I hadnt realised they actually had someone...
  15. I volunteer to drive a dredger.
  16. I suspect those engines running at a decent chat will move more silt than the BA do in a week. The mooring will soon be deep enough and Independance shaped once its in use.
  17. I believe the daily limit goes once you have been here a while or reached a certain amount of posts or learnt one of those special handshakes or been initiated etc One of the chosen few will be along to explain it properly I am sure
  18. 52 eh? Nice to see you ain't lost your counting skills
  19. She is A845 Freedom V One of old Herbys Gay Ladies http://www.broads.org.uk/wiki/index.php5?title=Boat_Details&BoatId=2199&BoatHistory=23066
  20. We escaped!!! A fortnight ago on those floods we took a flat out run (yup, we were speeding) at the non existent silt bar and made it through.... just. Buoyed with our success we kept going all the way from Catfield to Oulton Broad where we are now able to attend to 2 years worth of some much needed and previously impossible maintenance. It is now our intention to keep the yacht at Beccles. I will say this though, we are at the point a proper purpose built (at Potter Heigham ) river cruiser is no longer able to use some of the very rivers it was built for and has used for over 50 years because it keeps running aground. The Broads Authority have displayed an attitude not far short of shameful over Catfield. However you will be pleased to hear they are still "aware of the situation" !!! As long as it's deep enough for the ranger to get up there to check the tax discs eh?
  21. Agreed. Webasto/Eberspacher wet system every time. It's so versatile when fitting, lashings of hot water, the heat exchanger options are wide and varied so minimal cutting the boat about and you get to put a nice heated towel radiator in the head!!
  22. That is at least worth one of these And if was about it'd possibly stretch to a But, seeings as it's Christmas...
  23. Some of us are having an easier day that you humans! I may move a bit later, just to they can stoke the fire, and I did notice roast beef in the oven which will hold my attention at dinner time but, apart from that, I am pretty much done for the day! Happy Christmas Chunk
  24. Hehe And a little something for the engine room
