  1. A simple solution.... to not turning off a serviceable engine is save money on fuel and don't have one
  2. A final bump for the Alysham show on Saturday if you want to go and hide from the forecast wind and rain. I can't post this tomorrow as I'm moving layouts to the show, followed by 10 hours on my feet at the show on Saturday, Sunday will definitely be my day of rest!!!
  3. I didn't see it in the EDP and I've not watched the video But Kingline in Horning have an Electric day boat with lift, I found it very good when I took out elderly relatives.. http://www.kingline.co.uk/index.php/day-boats
  4. Jim Said" Funny! I remember a guy here that referred to his attempts at mooring as a "controlled collision" " A bit like this two days ago? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-37466864 I used to go to school on that ferry ( or it's predecessor....)
  5. A friend got banned from flying his glider by the RAF, at least flying from the nearby Civilian airfield,. The RAF did not want the headline RAF Sergeant cuts power supply to Weston Super mare.... Twice in one month!!!
  6. Updated SWMBOs fairly modern laptop yesterday which hadn't been switched on since the end of July, it took about half an hour including two reboots. We are lucky, in that a year or so ago BT dug a trench from Stalham to Lessingham and laid in a fibre optic cable. This has meant we went to Broadband 6 mHz back then and since August have now got 24MHz broadband, not bad considering the distance from the Stalham exhchange, and one of their engineers 5 years ago said we would never get off dial up!!
  7. I seriously doubt that, the broads tax is on the boat not the individual hirer, hire boats are out continuously for maybe 20 weeks a year if not more, sadly most of us owners still have to work and are lucky to get one weekend out a month and maybe two weeks in a year.
  8. No it can't, in order for the bank to be stable, the re-profiled bank must be at an angle of something like 45 degrees, this means if your draft is maybe a foot along the side of the hull and the top of your hull is 3 ft above the water line, then the side of of your boat will be at least 4 ft from the bank and that still just touching bottom, to allow for tide levels you could be 6 to ten feet from the bank!!!
  9. The point about mud weighting while stern on moored on the river, is to stop the bows being pulled up or down river by the tide, this would put extra strain one or other of the stern cleats. If you have fenders between your stern and the bank just stern ropes will not hold you straight on the river. Also if you have alongside boats you cannot use springs to tie further up or down the bank to hold you straight. The mud weight should be dropped well out, before reversing to the bank to reduce the effect of tidal changes.
  10. I deliberately missed out the live feed bit so as not to let people know about it not being filmed.....just to worry the offenders...
  11. A little note I forgot for the viewers of the race, The race does NOT go to Ludham Bridge or South Walsham Broad.
  12. Ladies and Gentlemen we have another sailing event that you may wish to enter, watch or avoid. Snowflake Sailing Clubs' Tri Icicle Race 23 October 2016. Described as a mini 3 Rivers race, it is arranged for the Sunday and only during daylight hours. The most crowded point will be the start with up to 50 boats in several fleets at 5 minute intervals. It should start at Horning sailing club at 10 o'clock, racing to turning points at somewhere before Acle Bridge and Potter Heigham Bridge then back to the club. It is likely however, unless the wind is absolutely perfect, that the turning points will be somewhat shorter at Oby mill And the dyke to Womack staithe. For those who wish to view by land, then the only places are the Pubs in Horning, Horning Church and Waterworks staithes, Thurne Lion Dyke and the long walk across to St Benets moorings. For those who wish to view by boat, then any of the ever reducing mooring points on route. For those wishing to avoid the race by boat, then From HSC and down river for the first hour would be the most crowded points, after that the fleet does get split up and you shouldn't have too much problem. For those wishing to enter then the entry form is attached Tri_Icicle_2016C.pdf
  13. i was going a bit further back than that the 1970s....
  14. No need to swing the camera around there is one from Hickling sailing club pointing in that direction, it just needs a telephoto lens. http://www.hicklingbroad.com/webcam2.html
  15. Gone are the days when you couldn't buy land in the Hebridies if you weren't a crofter...

  17. Some friends were teachers in London at about a similar time, when their house went up to such silly prices they sold up and moved to Northumberalnd and bought an entire Farm. with no Mortgage!!
  18. I've always thought that the upper set of Blue dots should extend to just tot the right of the red X and the original course of the river was the white dots, how long ago this was I don't know, but it seems a much more likely case to me. The possible trackway would not then need a river crossing. The section above and to the right of the red X could be a much older canalisation to make Cowholm much more defensible. Is there any sign of a bridge for the causeway to cross the Ant?, if not then this indicates that, that canalisation is a much later date..
  19. 07:09 It's just started chucking it down here in Norwich...
  20. Again showing 30 on the motor scooter yesterday at 15:00 in Norwich but down to 27 when I got to the coast of North Norfolk, 4th night in a row of terrible sleep, I feel quite rough this morning. We haven't had the heavy rain forecast for overnight, but it's very overcast this morning. So I wouldn't be surprised to hear some on the roof of the factory soon.
  21. It was 31C showing on my Motor scooter parked in the shade at 15:00 yesterday when I left work in Norwich, an half an hour later near the coast in North Norfolk it was showing 25C and there was an On shore breeze. 16C when I left home for work this morning at 06:00 not a cloud in the sky...
  22. Actually SWMBO is not from Rumpole of the Bailey( although Rumpole used it a lot), It's much older than that, it's from Henry Rider Haggard's 1886 novel "She, A History of Adventure" And since Sir Henry Rider Haggard, was born in Bradenham in Norfolk, It's a good Norfolk Expression.....
  23. The one everyone seems to miss is XP and laters' own Antivirus system, Microsoft defender, I've not heard of any complaints about it. Some time ago the multinational I work for which has hundreds of thousands of employees around the world all on computers switched from using a paid for anti virus to the one in MS and has not had a problem. I certainly wouldn't use Norton or Mcafee because of the previously mention problem of them slowing down computers ( I have used them both in the past).. Note I use IObit Advanced system care FREE to do general tidy ups of the computer but not their Antivirus, it turns off your fire wall in windows 10. Then I occasionally run Malwarebytes Free just to make sure nothing has sneaked through....
  24. Having serviced the commercial microwaves used in Tesco Cafes and staff diners I'd agree with everything Islander says..
  25. Actually they got a lot further than that since, the much sung about journey was from the Isle of Benbecula (where I used to live) back towards the Mainland, landing on Skye. This Skye Not this Skye Meanwhile the Royal Navy were out at the Isle of Hirta, (St Kilda) asking the Locals, Had they seen Prince Charlie?. Not only had they not seen Prince Charlie they hadn't Heard of him or of King George....
