  1. I haven't been to the earls court show or ist replacement since the mid 80'S, These days there is only one show to attend. Horning Boat Show May 5th 2018....
  2. I fitted a split unit system in our mobile home, a lot cheaper to run than 3 bar electric fires , no water output of a mobile gas heater and a lot safer.... similar to this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/KFR-53IW-Air-Conditioning-KFR53-System/dp/B00IOQ039U/ref=sr_1_29?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1516109510&sr=1-29&keywords=air+conditioning+split+unit
  3. A note about your Air conditioning, if you are on Shore power then a reverse cycle A/C, is a very efficient method of heating, as you will roughly get 3 times as much heat out as electrcity put in...
  4. Oi who stole my club house??!! Well actually HSC Club house wasn't built till 63, they used to meet in the Swan and we often used to go over to the pub during lunch time in the 80's but it's gradually become more commercial and less friendly... Also you can see the sign on the bank where the Southern comfort now moors, which used to say the Sawn Inn on this side and Horning Sailing club on the other side..with arrows pointing in the correct directions.
  5. I too would have thought that the Swans insurance should have covered it, the only awkward thing was the adjoining property was up for sale at the time.
  6. In that case the moon will have gone away, then we'd be in real trouble...

    My Day

Well this solves Oddity 2, clever crashing a car on a dead straight bit of road... http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/crime/33-year-old-man-arrested-for-drink-driving-after-car-stolen-and-dumped-by-side-of-a149-in-catfield-1-5356521 The police / EDP were wrong in their wording they stated the car was recovered at 06:30, when you can clearly see it's still there in day light. I think they mean it was found at 06:30....
  8. They have now changed to traffic lights at the Cremated Swan, this time with ones that change for you if there is nothing else using them...
  9. Just to let you know they've closed the Stalham - Palling road at the Cremated Swan again. The official diversion is via..... Happisburgh...

I'm not happy, the day is not going well... and then in tea break I'm wandering around the net to find the EDP is using pictures of the 3 Rivers Race to illustrate a car crash on Acle bridge... http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/acle-bridge-crash-appeal-1-5354679

    My Day

Posted Today, 16:33 Afternoon Awl, An odd day, Oddity 1, I ventured to the sailing club, a few minutes late, to reach the A149, to find at the end of the long straight, A front loader shoving the remains of a fallen tree off of the road. Oddity 2, In the far distance I could see stationary blue flashing lights. This stretch of the A149 is part of the former M&GN line to Yarmouth beach station. I turned off before reaching the blue lights. After getting past the fallen tree, a police car went the other way that's oddity 3, they're like hens teeth round here.. Oddity 4, I drove round a heron standing in the middle of the sailing club car park, Oddity 5, I was first at the club but the security gate was open. Wind nothing to not a lot, oddity 6 a south Easterly very rare here. Tide maximum coming in so probably 2, 2 mph against us. Due to that we set off to 1P, 2P, 4P. Race 1, We got a perfect start, first on the line where we wanted to be, so the wind promptly shifted giving the advantage to the next two boats. After a couple of tacks we had 5 boats tacking down river struggling against the tide, all getting inneach others way, suddenly the 5th place boat got a bit of wind and shot through to second place. We reached buoy 1 in 5th rounding that we hauled up the spinnaker and drifted back toward the club, overtaking one boat and nearing the 3rd place boat. Rounding bouy 2 in 4th, we were just able keep the spinnaker up very close hauled just occasionally the spinnaker collapsing. We drifted slowly below the next boat into third. Mean while the rescue boat went past and brought buoy 4 back to just round the bend as it had taken half an hour so far. Down spinnaker, pull out the Genoa round bouy 4 and start tacking toward the bend. Suddenly the 4th place boat shot past us as they got a rare puff of wind. Round the bend and it was one long tack on the left hand bank. The second place boat stayed on the left hand bank too long, we cut the corner and gained a lot. We tacked slowly up to buoy 1 then up spinnaker, and chased the third place down we got an overlap but unfortunately on the outside going round buoy 2 so although we had an overlap they got third. Oddity 7 we stopped, grabbed a tea and coffee and back in the boat with them. Sadly one of our club members has a terminal illness, and had expressed a wish to go for a final sail with the club and his family. So all the yeoman's racing plus others that came out especially, sailed off to Black Horse Broad. Some had come from other sailing clubs... Oddity 8 the owners of Black Horse Broad had given special permission to open the broad during the winter for this one event. We got towed into the broad and then set sail for the corner as we approached we could see Kevin being assisted by his wife and another adult to walk to the moorings of a house there. A club member had his yeoman ready there, and helped Kevin on board. Kevin set sail on the helm with his wife and 2 young teenage daughters. We then spent 2 hours cruising around the broad in company until Kevin returned back to the moorings. Then we headed back to the club, to pack up and have lunch. Oddity 9 on the way home an unmarked white Audi estate went hammering back down the A149,.... With blue lights flashing in the radiator grille and a few other strange places... An odd day

    My Day

SWMBO's brother has had his van broken into several times.. it's covered in asbestos hazard warning signs, and they have taken tools from the dirty sealed side of the van, that he won't go near without being fully suited up..
  13. I Which means there was no problem... In sailing at Horning I'm always amazed at those that take no account of the tide, particularly Past the Swan you can get a tide of 2 MPH, even up near Dydlers mill I have drifted up against the wind in a rescue boat at 1mph. Which reminds Me...... A quick look at Shorebase shows that on Sunday, the tide going out during all of the racing period, High tide being just Before the first race... So it's middle of the river going down, the edges coming back(where possible.)
  14. Broads regulation 15. "(1) Notwithstanding any provision to the contrary in these Byelaws the master of a vessel overtaking another vessel shall keep his vessel out of the way of the vessel being overtaken. (2) A vessel shall be overtaking when coming up with another vessel from a direction more than 22.5 degrees abaft deemed toits beam, that is, in such a position with reference to the vessel it is overtaking that at night the master would be able to see only the sternlight of the vessel but neither of its sidelights. (3) When a master is in any doubt as to whether his vessel is overtaking another he shall assume that this is the case and act accordingly. (4) Any subsequent alteration of the bearing between the two vessels shall not make the overtaking vessel a crossing vessel for the purposes of Byelaw 16 or relieve the master of the overtaking vessel of his duty of keeping clear of the overtaken vessel until his vessel is finally past and clear." Now if YOU are being overtaken by a vessel between you and the bank on the starboard Side, YOU are not keeping to the right hand bank.. However Broads reg 13 doesn't say that, it says "The master of a power-driven or manually propelled vessel proceeding along a channel shall when it is safe and practicable to do so keep to the side of mid channel which lies on the starboard or right hand side of the vessel" Which sort of implies you can wander around the middle of the river as long as you are just to the correct side of the centre line, which means the only way to overtake would be on the Bank Side.... or If YOU don't like being overtaken on the right hand side, stick to the bank... One of the problems with Bathtubs, is unless you have additional crew or mirrors or cameras, you cannot as required be keeping an good look out. As you cannot see out of over half of the boat.... one of the reasons I bought a centre cockpit boat. Broads regulation 8. The master of a vessel shall keep or cause to be kept a proper look-out by sight and hearing and shall observe any precaution which may be required by the ordinary practice of watermen in the navigation area or by the special circumstances of the case.
  15. I'm lucky I'm not superstitious because there was no way I was keeping the name of Paloma Blanca on our boat!!
  16. then you can say you were in a national park as well!!
  17. i've seen many more seals than before further up the coast towards Happisburgh. Luckily not ashore as it's a favourite doggy walking beach..
  18. I meant to say, I heard no complaints about motorboat manouvers back in the clubhouse...
  19. It's a times like that you could do with a 360 Degree camera. In this boxing day photo, The Bigger boats in the race were Yeoman, that's us with the big bird Picture Curtesy of Paddy Wildman.. The little one in this Picture is a Topper, There were also Lasers, slightly bigger than the Topper but with the international Laser symbol on the normally all white sail. During the first race we did not do well, and you must have done your manouvers before we got there..
  20. A great write up , I attempted to say a few words to you, as we went past in the rescue boat, while we putting the buoys out on Boxing day morning. But noticed you were away before we got going with the racing. With the events at the Swan I suppose that is not surprising
  21. Our current Dog is 6 and I'm 60, So I think we can have one more, considering both my parents are still up and around and only lost their last dog a couple of years ago.
  22. The first time I can remember going to Farnborough, I had free tickets and transport as I was working for the CAA. Later working for GEC avionics, we were encouraged to go, but we were expected to put in a day off, pay for our transport and tickets. Then requested to visit the company stand to collect company advertising badges to wear... Needless to say even those enthusiasts who went, didn't wear the badges.. I've only been to Farnborough once since, for a two week course when nothing interesting was flying about. SWMBO's brother spent several months lying under the runway, stripping asbestos off piping during a very hot summer, while of course wearing full protective gear....... with aircraft landing a couple of feet above....

    My Day

What ? No one else posted in a week, it'll end up my thread!!! Easterly wind stronger than forecast, causing the occasional white top on the river. We had an additional buoy today number 5 by Dydlers mill. The dinghies had a special 2 day event so there were around thirty in number probably a surprise for those coming through on motorboats. They were in three fleets, allcommers, toppers and optimists. They started in 5 minute intervals after us in that order.Their course 2P, 3P.Our course 2P, 5P.Due to the wind direction we started 400 yards up river, heading back to the club.Race 1, in the pre start manoeuvring the only problem we had was a topper who strayed into out start area. We made the line first and got clear away after several tacks reaching buoy 2.On turning at the buoy we looked at the hoard of dinghies, and decided for safety not to put the spinnaker up until we passed through their start line.Soon after the start line we went round the right hand bend, and the deployed the spinnaker. What we found was on the long run down to buoy 5 the others who didn't use a spinnaker caught up!!Then a very long series of tacks back to buoy 2, during which we passed through the now racing dinghies with surprisingly little trouble. Those behind seemed to drop back a lot during this .Rounding buoy 2 as the dinghies were well spread apart. Up spinnaker, only a little weaving required to get through them. Turning at the bend went well. We continued down to buoy 5 with a short stretch of "death Rolls" when we were hit by a huge gust. Then after rounding buoy 5 it was the long tacks back to the club. The dinghies were mostly finished due to their shorter course, they finished us as well so we won easily. The others in our race were inexperienced and didn't really stand a chance. Why the more experienced sailors didn't turn up I don't know. The others didn't want to do the second race due to the high winds. So that was the end of our day...Note.. "death rolls" when the boat rocks from side to side uncontrollably down wind, in a dinghy this often means an early bath. In a keel boat it may lead to a loss of control and hitting things...
  24. Actually at this stage in the war many of the soldiers were still full timers or reservists, not national service, so their average age was much higher than later in the war. My grandfather was 39/ 40 Having joined up in 1919.
  25. 2500ltrs for road use before you have to pay tax on it http://www.vegoilmotoring.com/eng/legal-stuff. How much of that applies to using Veg oil as Boat fuel I don't know, but I've never seen anyone testing motor boat tanks on the broads for incorrect fuel. if you fitted a Landrover Diesel engine up to and including the 300TDI, you can just add veg oil up to 80% in the summer without processing. in the winter it's just too thick. So I'm running on 100% Diesel at the moment in the landrover..
