  1. We also found the best cure for post holiday blues was to book the next trip. We’re up on Fair Ambassador later next year, in fact we had a crazy couple of days booking two holidays in as many days, we’re off to France in Summer to my mum and step dads place to introduce the girlfriends folks to them. Strangely enough, another holiday that involves boats, be it a slightly larger scale!
  2. Robin, I have a friend who does domestic and commercial hvac systems, he’s based in Redhill, he also is a boaty (albeit a bit smaller than the scale you’re looking at) I can put you in touch with him if you wish, I’m sure he could offer some advice on your plans?
  3. You could head down towards Barton then back up to Sutton Staithe, a bit nicer than being in the yard and not a very long run up there. It’s pretty sheltered up at Sutton, likewise the river is fairly sheltered most of the way up and down.
  4. Coincidentally technically the beginning of half term as well? Though I’d probably have waited for Saturday...
  5. That’s what I did with my rhond anchors, but one got pulled out over night, I’m going to assume I didn’t have it in at enough of an angle, or the ground got so waterlogged over night it just pulled out. one of our neighbours we’re only on with two lines on anchors and one pulled leaving them halfway out across the Dyke circa 2am, oh how we all laughed when we discussed it the next morning!
  6. I’m afraid as there’s only the two of us in the house we use the packeted Brittania dripping, still works well though.
  7. Indeed, Barnes have been flexible with me on deposits as well, I guess they know I’m not going to let them down and always take care of the boats
  8. Indeed, probably not the easiest word to lip read
  9. There’s a woman who pretty much every morning drives into the village hall car park where I live (the car park has about 40 spaces, most of them unoccupied at 7.30 in the morning) in her brand new Audi Allroad thing (what a combo, Audi AND 4x4) with her 3 private school attending offspring, however rather than park in a space, she parks right in the entrance so her beloved offspring don’t have to walk more than 3 yards to the minibus, therefore turning the usual 2 lane entrance into a one lane entrance, making it pretty dangerous for anyone trying to get into our out of the car park onto the main road, including aforementioned school minibus. For the last week ive been taking pictures of her doing this, if she doesn’t ask me why I’m doing it soon I’m going to send them to the local council and her children’s school...
  10. Coming back once again, as far as which is better... it entirely depends on your application, personally, if I were buying a boat, I’d plump for shaft drive and cable steering, in my mind, less to go wrong, and easier to fix, however I’m a fairly mechanically minded guy. I don’t mind losing a bit of space to an engine, or having a little more cabin noise as the engine is beneath my feet, but if you’re the person who doesn’t want to get involved in grease monkey-ing and would prefer a quieter less involved set-up, then hydro may be the right choice for you. As with so many of these things, different strokes for different folks, what suits me, might not suit you. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, personally I prefer the simpler side of things, But I’m the weird hybrid son of a engineer come farmer...
  11. Indeed, this is true, the risk of mechanical damage by props getting snagged is less, as if the pressure builds up too much the system ‘vents’ however, it would require some interaction to get it working again, be it a reset on the valves, or a top up of fluid.
  12. Presuming you mean hydraulic Andrew, yes there is shaft drive, which is a direct drive, so the output of the gearbox is connected directly to the propellor, or hydraulic, whereby the gearbox drives a pump, this pumps fluid, which then drives the prop, it’s an indirect drive as there is no mechanical linkage between the two. steering is a similar theory, you have cable steering whereby the wheel is connected to the rudder via two (or more) cables or hydraulic which is more like a power steering system in a car. hydraulic drive has the advantage you can place the engine wherever you chose in whatever orientation, the disadvantage is you suffer more transmission losses as it is less efficient, it also produces a characteristic whining noise. hope that helps?
  13. I will add some from the other half later, does she need her own account?
  14. Likewise, pretty sure I walked Jangles there the other week, in fact, I believe I may have been advised too by a well known Horning character
  15. Usually bins by the pubic toilets back right of the Staithe next to the road
  16. Always need dripping and lots and lots of rock salt, unless it’s christmas, then substitute beef dripping for goose fat
  17. Welcome, have a great trip, lovely time of year to be out on the water, if potentially a little chilly at night!
  18. As I say, booking direct would be preferable, but the difference of £125 in deposit (I know it works out the same all told) and saving £40+ on the total booking makes it all a bit more palatable. Realistically, had it been a £150 deposit, I probably wouldn’t have booked so early, I’m in marketing and design, so I shouldn’t in theory fall for these techniques, however, I’ve booked and paid my deposit, so it’s worked for them!
  19. Have a safe night from Ems and I, as I said in another thread, we were up a couple of weeks back and caught the tail end of Hurricane Maria at Thurne, was a bit of a rough night!
  20. I’m hugely aware I do this quite a bit... Will make every attempt when I turn my ‘notes’ into a holiday diary to not do it!
  21. It is what it is I guess, bums on seats as it were, Hoseasons I imagine have a larger presence/audience, so can presumably call the shots price wise to a degree. Booking next years trip has taken a lot of consideration, after the service I had from Barnes this year, I would have dearly loved to book through them for next years trip, they were amazing, but in this instance didn’t have anything that fitted the requirements and budget for next years trip. However, that wouldn’t stop me recommending them to others. My experiences with NBD have also been exemplary, and hopefully next year will replicate that.
  22. Booked Fair Ambassador, rude not to, Hoseasons are doing £25 deposit and some fairly heavy discounts on 2018 bookings, I’d rather book direct but they can’t match it...
  23. Oh, I appear to have ‘accidentally’ booked next years holiday....
