  1. I know there are some good people there, I have had dealings with them and they have helped me out. I also aknowledge that whatever I've done, you will have done more. So he's employing someone in a cushy job for £47k with not much to do. I would keep quiet and take the money for that but then you say it's 42.5% below what that person could earn elsewhere. Well there's the old saying "if you pays peanuts you gets monkeys". But we've sort of agreed there are good people there so something doesn't seem to stack up. So when this new person starts they will be told: These are the people you will respect..... You will not have fresh ideas of your own, you will be told what to think and say. We are not interested in any of your experiences outside of this establishment. This is how we have done things for years and we will carry on the same way. Fail to comply with the above and you will witness our displeasure. I know the feeling. On the planet INDUSTRY where I come from we stopped promoting people on the basis of time served, years ago. To beat the competition we have to identify their weaknesses and acknowledge their strengths. Strengths can't be identified if judgement is clouded by overwhelming hate. Probably best if I keep my oily hands out of it and enjoy my retirement.
  2. How about a reduction in tolls and insurance for the fitting of a "Black Box" to a boat? Sorry, I know it's not my place to make suggestions, I've only been here 5 years.
  3. No, my knowledge of the Broads is limited to what I have seen since 2018 and I say what I see based on my experience of such, and the World outside the Broads (there is one) where normal things happen.
  4. That seems to assume the people left care a toss. Do we have evidence that these people were removed or did they leave because of their conscience? Maybe he's recruited from the financial industry like the people I had to deal with over my mortgage. Or from the sales industry. I'm thinking about staff at a high level, not those struggling for work. How do the salaries within Yare House compare to what could be earned elsewhere? That could also be an influence.
  5. I wouldn't be be too quick to celebrate if/when JP finally goes. By focussing on him people seem not to notice the lack of whistle blowers. I would prefer to see a complete clear out.
  6. I get this: you've been confused by the Ranworth thread where they keep referring to car parks. I shudder to think where you've put the car!
  7. Well done James Knight and well done BRAG. It's surely going to be difficult to defend actions if they are proven to be unlawful.
  8. Timely that Google are celebrating Doctor Victor Chang today. Never heard of him before but we owe a lot to him and others.
  9. What's all this about swans? It was surely Dick Dastardly, Mutley and a Pigeon.
  10. Main dealer servicing is compulsary for the duration of a new car warranty usually, so with a 7 year warranty are you committing to 7 main dealer priced services? For £128 above, how many hours labour would that be? But, then you get the bonus of FSH on the vehicle's record and how much is that worth? Hard to call but easy for those of us who find it easy to do our own services. In 1996 I bought a six month old Peugeot from a main dealer and just after the warranty expired the rear bakes failed badly, locking the wheels! In 2013 the Volvo came new with 4 services for £400. A couple of months after the last service I had to replace all four discs and the pads! The cynic in me thinks that manufacturers may be making it difficult for independants by tweaking the technology. As if they would...
  11. Thanks for that info. I checked the King's Head prices - hmmm. Did you know the Co-op do a meal deal for 4 quid? I have used the Travelodge at Acle a few times especially in the winter, as it's only 6 miles from my boat. I used to get over Friday after work and have a comfy night to make best use of the limited daylight next day. I did the same the other week as it's still usually only £29 for Sunday night. There's an M&S Food at the service station but I never knew about the Co-op. A lot of places are doing a meal deal (a light lunch) for about £4.
  12. I had an old outboard to play with a few years ago so I googled it to see what it looked like. It's a piano.
  13. Oops, just found the internal pics!
  14. Lovely boat! I'm looking forward to seeing the inside. Did you have a hand in the design?
  15. I offer the theory that it's not the pronunciation that's wrong; it's the spelling. Having researched my family history I have experienced hand written records hundreds of years old. Parish records written by whoever was responsible within the local church. Go back far enough through time and this person may be the only person in the village who could read and write. Said person probably didn't think that in 300 years time everyone would be able to read and write on their laptops. So in Norfolk accents of the time: Excuse me, what is your name? Herbet Oswaldwhistle. And how do you spell that? I'm sorry I don't know. Where are you from? Hone-ing And how do you spell that? How the hell you like because I can't read! And so the person wrote down what they thought it should be thinking this writing lark would go the way of VHS and cassette tapes. I saw variations in parish records where one person had recorded all events in date order as they happened, then their successor had written them all down grouping similar events together. The only way to find what you're looking for (if it's even there!) is by reading every entry.
  16. Thank you, I wanted to ask how much but thought it a bit rude.
  17. Lovely. Who wouldn't want a holiday on the Broads after seeing that? No jeopardy or crashes. A remake would be interesting.
  18. I was thinking along the lines of solar panels, insulation, heat pumps etc where grants can be an incentive. Sky tv, mobile phones etc. where they give you the equipment but for a fixed term contract. Depends who wants it more, the customer (BA) or the supplier. We as consumers will just have to pay for it all anyway but maybe not through the tolls, just on the power used.
  19. I wonder about this one: do we know the cost of installation or are you assuming that's the case? I wonder if the supplier would install charging points at a heavily discounted rate or free?
  20. For goodness sake! I've just caught this but it looks like within 10 hours of it appearing here we are trying to pin it on JP! But for the sake of a couple of minutes googling one can see that this couple gave up their professions to invest in the place in 2022. Well if my maths is correct that's about last year then. A brilliant time to invest just as everyone is flush with cash??? Not. A gamble. Fair play to them for giving it a go but they blame rising costs of wholesale stuff. Best to get out before you lose too much then. So what does "permanently" actually mean for the future of the place? Convert to a nice house or does another business take over? I guess we'll see.
  21. I don't wish to make anyone feel old but I think Watneys was a thing of the past before I was old enough to drink. I remember "What we want is Watneys!" but mainly it's mentioned in a Monty Python sketch about travel agents. Actually Coventry gets a mention too:
  22. Maybe we should have an "Aspy" section of the forum! I too am blessed with a little part of Dr Hans Asperger's wonderful syndrome and I guess there are others close by who may not realise they are too. You are not alone and the level of your attention to detail gave you away ages ago!
  23. This could apply to thousands, just change the place names: "Like a lot of boys he joined up too early and was thrown out. He joined again when he was old enough and was a private in the 7th Middlesex Regiment. He ended the war as a Corporal. He fought at a few places but Fleurs and the Somme were among them. He was a very good shot with a rifle and was a sniper at times. He told us he used to aim “four inches below the spike”. This refers to some of the German helmets which had a spike on top! On the other hand he was also involved in hand to hand fighting which he didn't like to talk about. In the trenches, when a German hand grenade landed in the trench the person nearest to it was expected to pick it up and chuck it back! We think of it as heroic now but back then it was seen as looking after your mates; you were all in it together. Grandad had scars on the back of his right hand where a grenade went off as he was throwing it back. But then think: how far can you throw a grenade? Well if one lands in your trench then the bloke who threw it is not far away is he? By the time you've bent down to pick it up he could be at the top of your trench and about to jump in! One night they were out in No-man's Land on patrol, captain at the front and Grandad as corporal at the back. A shell landed in the middle of them and Grandad woke up in an American field hospital some time later. For years he believed he was the only survivor but he found out the captain had also survived. Unfortunately, all the others perished. They would have been his friends and neighbours. I think that is the reason they never talked about their experiences in public, as someone who lost a relative may be able to hear. Also, it could be seen as gloating that you survived. During WW2 he served in the local Home Guard around Tottenham."
