  1. "Like the Berlin Wall"?? I saw the Berlin Wall when it was one year old. What a load of tosh being talked. I suspect the "journalists" encourage such hyperbole.
  2. Didn't think it would be long. http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/environment/opposition-to-marina-quays-housing-bid-1-5682747 The end result will certainly be better than it is currently.
  3. Had a nice day out on the Mid Norfolk Railway. Is this expansion joint the answer to the problems with Somerleyton and Reedham bridges? Seems to me that these placed just before either end of the bridge approach might work.
  4. Try Bell boats Ltd at Brundall. My eldest son had a DC 30 from the Gt Ouse lifted in there and I had an Elysian lifted out by a truck with an Hiab for transport to the Gt Ouse. The fee was quite reasonable. 01603 713109.
  5. I think British Sugar at Cantley would have had something to say about stuck bridges in the days of Blackheath and Rix Hawk delivering oil to them.
  6. I have spent my whole life learning more and more about less and less till I learnt absolutely all there is to know about nothing!
  7. I knew of the boatyard, but not if it hired out. There was apparently a pub among the houses! When the place was demolished/fell down, I do not know and Google doesn't help! Nothing remains now apart from an old Nissen Hut and a concrete pad which we think was associated with the boat yard.
  8. Took a bit of digging to find it, but here is Hardley Staithe as it used to be. I am afraid I don't have a date for the photo
  9. The answer re Hardley Dyke is yes to both, there was even a pub there long ago. Vestiges of the old slipway remain, but all the buildings have long gone.
  10. Who says they dont maintain them? You only have to look at the state of the iron work associated with Somerleyton Bridge.Delays due to parts having to be made. They have had since 1905 to source the spare required to ensure reliable operation.
  11. there is no fresh water supply available at Somerleyton. Should not be beyond the wit of man to pipe in fresh water from Somerleyton station or the Marina. Sounds more like a case of can't be bothered to rather than cannot.
  12. However, hats off to them, at least they are doing it, yours truly only ever thinks about it! Very sensible JM, there are a lot of jobs that need a good coat of looking at before being attempted!
  13. I wonder how many of the still open Coal fired plants are gently ticking over in the background? Using, but not producing energy. Takes a long time to fire up a coal powered plant from cold.
  14. It could be argued that The Haven Commissioners and their successors have had since October 21st 1930 to source the spares needed. I would venture to suggest if the bridge was down at the Gorelston end of the harbour, then it would be repaired in double quick time.
  15. In the good old pre Tingdene days it was family owned. Owner died, family put it up for sale, Tingdene bought it and the mooring fees for a 27ft boat went up £500 in 3 years.
  16. Re Hylander's picture. Dare I say "Not the most alluring of Ladies"?
  17. Accrington Stanley, Yes I know "who are they?"are 4th division Champions and are going up to the 3rd division.
  18. Every week on my boat Ohhhh Matron!
  19. Quote "The bridges at Reedham on the River Yare and Somerleyton on the River Waveney have been swinging open for fixed-mast river craft since 1905. However, both require regular maintenance to keep them in full working order and are coming to the end of their useful life. They had worked with Network Rail for a number of years regarding the bridges." So, if they have been swinging since 1905, that means the railway companies, BR and Network Rail have had 113 years to get a stock of spares in to keep them swinging smoothly. Victorian/Edwardian infrastructure is NOT a valid excuse.
  20. Same side as Goodhilds, but a little upstream.
  21. Years ago I had a Colvic Watson (ex Sandersons) with a brand new Jabsco loo which was very stiff to pump. Decided to fit new seals. Rang Jabsco to ask what lubricant to use on reassembly. They asked if it was less than two years old. I replied yes and they sent me a new pump assembly foc. They had changed the seal material for a short while that didn't perform well.
  22. That has got the look of an aft cockpit Ormelite to me. My youngest lad had one on the river Nene. We replaced the 2cyl Stuart Turner with a nice little D722 Kubota.
  23. My brother and I used to call our Grandfather (Mum's Dad) Pom Pom. Why is lost in the mists of time and the question is unanswerable now as both my parents have gone. Maybe we called him that for the same reason as Sheila's toddlers!
