  1. well lots more sanding later, and I am getting there.
  2. this morning after shopping it was down to work, sanding and rasping and filing, until I got to the point where I could fair the hull into the stem. I also dug out an extra clamping, rotating vice for added support, this has enabled me to tip the model to a better position to sand the stem. I have then used the filler to smooth the hull into the stem, this is now setting so that later I can finish sanding the stem into place.
  3. Well finally a way to hold the boat for shaping, upside down, 3 bench vices set at right angles to normal, each holding a bulkhead, then at it with the finger sander, the spokeshave and the rasp, and we are getting close, now its down to the fine work, detail sanding to the profile, its now, when I am fairly happy with this piece of oak, that I can glue this in place. next some filler will be added - before I do the final shaping, this will be sanded to shape at the same time as the oak to get the shape faired in, its looking a bit off from the front at the moment as one side appears to have a deeper curve than the other, but I am certain this will balance in as I bring it to the final shape.
  4. on our first trip to the broads we went under a tree and lst the mop on the way up to wroxham, however on the way back through Horning, a mop was spotted floating, and recovered, no not the one we lost, this was a different colour.
  5. I'll have you know - its the boxes they go boating in, not the shoes.
  6. I might just have to put it in the vice. to be honest boats are a horrible shape to hold still, I do have a selection of smaller vices that are bench clamp with adjustable angles, I will have to see what I can manage, the bulkheads may be a good place to grip, I need to finish sanding the hull too, and a good steady workpiece will assist that process too.
  7. I do 33,000 miles a year commuting to work, I avoid expensive tyres as they are soft compound and can wear out in mere months, I generally go for a mid range tyre rated for good wear (some tyre place websites show the various values and ratings) while this may be at the expense of wet grip, I would rather have a good wearing tyre that lasts me a year, then have expensive tyres that I have to buy 4 sets a year, and find I have less than optimal tread more of the year (4 times a year instead of once) also with more expensive tyres you will be more tempted to stretch the time you are running them and put up with low tread for longer than with a mid range or quality budget tyre. so mid range or good quality budget for me - about £60-£80 a corner on my volvo.
  8. I too watched that and found it very interesting, showing that you can combine the modern systems with old fashioned sailing technology, it was interesting though that when they had to send someone aloft, they had to shut down the radar.
  9. the thing was when I roughed it out I left a bit too much meat on the bone so to speak, so needed a way to quickly get it to a better profile, now it will be down to a good rasp, then sandpaper. the biggest problem is holding the workpiece, as its tapered in every direction, and attached to a 40" long boat, I do have a spokeshave that may well come into play later, if I can figure a way of holding it still enough to free up two hands
  10. where the only hazard is the car in front spotting the camera and hitting the brakes hard to slow down, I wonder how many speed cameras have caused accidents by people trying to slow down for them. most people will dab their brakes on when they see them, even if they are well under the speed limit.
  11. I have done most of mine, but the one I am dubious about is the one from natwest from 25 years back, I dont have the paperwork and having read up they only hold the records for 6 years, so it may be a bit tricky
  12. So, how do you remove large quantities of timber quickly, well after trying various methods of sanding, I hit upon cutting lots of saw cuts down just short of where I needed, then out with chisel and mallet, slowly getting there.
  13. Charlie, they are generally just a suction cup, and plug into the lighter socket, mine powers up when you turn the ignition on (and the socket goes live) and off after I turn the car off, the g sensor on mine stores the current video in an area where it isnt erased by subsequent video.
  14. not to mention the village of Kingston in kent, my mother in law lives there and is always given early appointments at the Marsden in Sutton as they assume she is local, we have to leave about 6.30am to make them as its a good 2 hour drive at that time of day.
  15. Tim, we will start worrying when you wear track suit bottoms and a sailor hat
  16. you could buy a foil turkey roasting dish, and once you have cooked the turkey, stick it around the bow of your boat.
  17. he is an archaeology relic.
  18. it might depend whether you have an oil drip tray under your engine as well, I suspect the requirement is for some means of oil containment should you get a leak. retro fitting a drip tray would be more difficult than a filter I guess. Just guessing here as I dont really know, some better informed people will be along later to provide accurate information.
  19. no this is the place, but I have no idea about tapatalk, I do find though if I have a list of unread posts up, and somebody posts in one of them that the thread can dissappear next time I refresh the page
  20. I remember walking just over a mile to school at my infants school and a mile back in the afternoon, my primary school was about the same and I struck lucky with my secondary school at 1/2 mile walk - but I used to go home for dinners from there so still 2 miles a day.
  21. does that mean what goes around - comes around?
  22. that's the one thing that puts me off solo cruising - I don't have a great deal of boating experience, maybe we should start a thread for people who want to go boating but need the experience, to buddy up and boat share a hire boat to gain that experience and confidence to go solo.
  23. me - my mum used to make the puppets for my school - there was a badger who was a policeman
  24. Ricardo, I was driving round a roundabout when someone pulled onto it right in front of me - he then chased me to the supermarket and had a go at me for nearly hitting him and endangering his kids in the back. I think he was going to pick a fight, but then all 6 foot 4 of me got out of the car and he decided to back off.
  25. what I can see of the side deck is looking Posh Griff.
