  1. I haven’t a clue either but 1948 seems a good figure.
  2. This thread really does show the forum as it’s best. Loads of thoughts and helpful advice. Jocave - I do hope you find a suitable solution to your conundrum, I’m sure there will be many folk interested in what you come up with eventually as mobility problems catch up with most of us in the end!! It would be good to think that Mrs Jocave can carry on boating for a while yet.
  3. I find that RSPB article quite scary. The organisation has a fair amount of clout and I wonder how much the BA would actually resist them if push came to shove. Thank you JM for posting those two items.
  4. Welcome from me too. I very much regret that the bug you have caught has no known cure. As with the flu bug, you have to let it run its course which I’m afraid probably means you will just have to learn to live with it. And learning is such wonderful fun! Enjoy your April trip and be sure to come back and tell us how you got on. Plenty of information to be found here so just ask away.
  5. Oh frapping halyards, here we go again!
  6. JohnK - Broadsword would certainly be the answer to your volunteering question, they do a lot of darn good work. You’ll have to join the Broads Society but that only puts you ‘in with the in-crowd’!
  7. And that’s exactly why we need those local eyes and ears that help keep us all informed.
  8. It would be great if it became a dog friendly establishment again but it is also nice to have more of a proper restaurant so close to the water. I wonder which would prove more popular.
  9. Couldn’t Dan find your glasses? Goodchild’s seem to lift out some quite large vessels so you should be ok there.
  10. That’s why it’s so good that we have members who keep eyes and ears open for anything untoward. As they also keep the rest of us informed, debate and discussion can continue. Like many forum members, I have learnt a lot about this subject and realise how important it is to keep on top of developments. It’s all very well saying ‘it’ll never happen’ but I do seem to remember people saying that a certain referendum would never produce a ‘leave’ vote........................
  11. I think a lot depends on the way you actually use your boat - for weekends and short trips or weeks at a time. If weekends and short trips then the south certainly would provide quieter trips. If weeks at a time then crossing north to south can become part of the trip. Being based in the north is great in the quieter months. Both areas have much to offer, having been based in the north for a number of years maybe time for a change?
  12. I hope you don’t mind me commenting here too, having dogs I take an interest in all matters doggie! I’m all for dogs in harnesses in cars but I can’t see any dog enjoying being in one of those for very long. It rather looks to me as if it could be quite damaging to a dog’s back, after all it is not a natural position for an animal. Is your daughter-in-law really serious?
  13. How true but I think most newspapers do everything they can to sensationalise stories in order to sell them. There is so much inaccurate nonsense in the media these days that I am beginning to wonder if it is actually worth buying a newspaper! Having said that, I know that as long as I keep an open mind I can at least extract the basic information. In fairness to the EDP, it did state that the speeder had been caught 3 times speeding in the Norwich area and also at Whitlingham. That should have told readers that it was not an isolated incident and was therefore worthy of a hefty fine. We have been fortunate here on the forum to have members who have experienced first hand this guy’s excessive speeding so we have a bit more meat on the bones.
  14. Having experienced a very uncomfortable incident on Breydon, I am glad this prosecution has taken place. If I hadn’t caught our television as it slid from it’s usual secure location, it would probably have landed on one of our dogs. All due to a guy going as fast as he could backwards and forwards across Breydon without any thought for other boats. I reported the boat to the BA and was asked if I would be prepared to go to court. I said I hoped it wouldn’t come to that and it didn’t but I would have gone if necessary. You have to drive a car with due care and attention, why not a boat as well?
  15. Call it abba then (a beautiful boating adventure).
  16. Sounds like he has not the slightest respect for others, rules, regulations or authority so I guess it will not be too long before he is at it again. Probably the only way to stop someone like that is to confiscate the vessel but I doubt it would ever come to that.
  17. Is your boat of Swedish origin? If so, maybe it was named in Swedish and the name has never been changed.
  18. Welcome from me too, it sounds as if you will be having some interesting times - enjoy!
  19. Actually I do! And I really don’t understand why you should make that comment. Maybe I haven’t explained myself very well, tell me which part of my posts you haven’t understood and I will try and elaborate.
  20. Once again, no arguments there. Problem is most of the small shops that used to be handy for boaters HAVE closed. There are some really good local butchers but for river users they are few and far between with little in the way of available moorings - think Stalham, Wroxham and Horning. There are a lot of folk who live aboard in the Thorpe area and probably are grateful to have access to a supermarket (as Islander has pointed out) and also access to cheaper goods than the small shops provide. Horses for courses as the saying goes. Who remembers the tiny shops at Broom’s Brundall and Bondon’s South Walsham? The post offices and shops at Barton Turf and Somerleyton. Lots more too, no doubt someone will remind us of a few.
  21. I don’t disagree with you but, until that area started being developed, there were signs there indicating 2 hour mooring availability. It was never clear who had actually put the sign there but it was generally accepted. I guess the sign was removed when they started building. It would be far better if it either became a recognised short stay mooring or no mooring signs were put up. Not everyone wants to go to Norwich YS, it would be quite a walk back from Morrison’s with shopping bags. There are food shops reasonably close to the YS but not with the choice of M’s and there is also a variety of other shops at Riverside too. Personally I love mooring at the YS and going into the city but I also appreciate being able to do a big shop without actually visiting the city.
  22. Welcome from me too. So much to enjoy but never enough time............
  23. So just another boat owner who thinks rules and regs don’t apply to him then!! The problem with him mooring semi-permanently at Riverside is that eventually no mooring notices will appear and that will put paid to any boater mooring there to shop at the Riverside shops. Now that would be a shame, when we’ve stopped there is usually at least one vessel there with it’s owner shopping!
