  1. The heater exhaust outlet may be a better clue.
  2. "Scraps from mum's plate are usually as small as contractual obligation allow and fall into the category of "You can have this.. if you must" I am currently exploring the possibility of a claim under the "Minimum Scraps Act (2007) as amended (2018) Subsection IV para 13" Which, as you know, specifies that scraps should be of sufficient quantity to taste without actually chewing. Anyway, the ball's in her court... although I will of course fetch it all day long. Danni Dog" Thanks for the heads up Danni. I have asked to go to the library immediately so I can research this Minimum Scraps Act as I feel it would be beneficial to us all. Sadly it seems they are 'too busy' so I have put on my best sulky face, that'll show em!
  3. Is there a requirement in law (or by-law) to name a boat? And if so, is there a requirement to display that name? Registration numbers yes, obviously, but just curious about the naming thing.
  4. Broadland Minstrel was completely rebuilt in Martham's DIY shed by a chap called Peter who then used her for himself and his wife. That was about 10 years ago (I was there restoring Chloe Jane at the same time). If I remember correctly she was one of very few that had never been a hire boat! When he had finished her he was having trouble getting the waterline straight so I fired a laser beam along her hull for him. Unfortunately his calculation was slightly out resulting in the waterline being perfectly straight but an inch too low all the way round and a constant stream of phone calls from people concerned she was sinking! Peter made a lovely job of her and I would think she must still be one of the best out there.
  5. Take the fan belt/s off and then run the engine briefly. If the noise has stopped you know it's a belt driven part that's failed. If the noise is still there its something more internal. If it's a belt driven part that's making the noise you'll normally be able to identify the culprit by spinning each one by hand.
  6. She is currently laid at Steve Evans (the old Albatross yard) at St Olaves. You can see her alongside the roadway as you sit and wait for the traffic lights. Steve rescued her some years ago and gave her a home but she was/is pretty derelict. It'd be a very brave restoration. I'll grab some pictures next week
  7. Griff will get under no problem at the right tide. The road bridge has developed a hydraulic issue which is not allowing it to close normally after being raised. Because it may need to be in the raised position for extended periods for the work to be carried out, that work will be done overnight after the holiday weekend. In the meantime the lock is, I believe, operating normally for those that fit under the road bridge.
  8. Just for balance, private boats are not exempt from the maladies of boating in Norfolk
  9. Don't you get that boat of yours stuck the wrong side of Potter second week of August!
  10. The giraffe or the life jacket? Here's my contribution for what it's worth.... Moored next to a lovely couple who had these two on board with them. They had been let down so packed them and bought them with them! We often take our parrot on the boat and he absolutely loves it. On a busy mooring like Ranworth or Wroxham he just talks to everyone non stop.
  11. If your beer hits the floor it's a nudge. If the whole table goes, taking your beer with it, it's a crash 😀
  12. Do you want me to move your lock forward? 10.00ish?
  13. Get one with a delay start timer so you can wake up to a house full of fresh baked aroma and a warm loaf for breakfast.
  14. Don't you dare or you'll be hot bunking with Water Rail
  15. I think that, as wooden boat owners we all know that , at some point, we will lose a season to a bigger repair session. What makes this one painful for Martin and Fiona is that it comes on the back of the previous two covid restricted seasons. Pleased to hear that Martham Boats will be able to help with a floaty boaty fix.
  16. That was me back in the day! The fleet was wooden and I had a tin of 'mix' in the dinghy next to me. Mix was 50% white undercoat and 50% white gloss. All the scratches and marks were painted in every week keeping everything nice and white for the next customers.
  17. Well there have been a number of Herbert Woods boats in at Oulton Broad over the last couple of days and all have looked pretty smart. They have all started, stopped, heated, bow thrusted and been well behaved. And no sign of the service van! In fact the only problem at all on a Woods boat was the poor chap who, having pulled his mudweight up and tidied it up on the deck, then tripped and fell off the bow of the boat. I guess the water is still pretty cold coz he was somewhat keen to get out again. No harm done and his phone was waterproof (perhaps an omen) which was a bonus. It does make you realise how easily these things can happen though.
  18. The clue is in the lack of step in the hullof the wooden ones. The fibreglass hulled version have stepped hulls making for a really roomy boat.
  19. I remember the days when all we took was a pack of cards and a game of ludo
  20. Don't forget that you'll pass GY at slack water rather than low water arriving an hour later by which time the tide is already starting to rise. The tide table will also offer a predicted height which will help. You are probably not too far off though you will be arriving at St Olaves with the tide up your transom so make your decision as soon as you see the first height marker thus giving you time to react if needed.
