  1. Bit like slugs you chuck over the wall. Not that I’d ever do that. We have a hedge at the back, so we can keep peace with our neighbours. Lucky that, as our neighbours are special... very lovely people.
  2. I think I’d prefer the creepy crawlies personally. Dethlac sounds, well...a bit deathly.
  3. I think that the pub that’s close to the Yacht Station has reopened as a fish restaurant. They might only be doing takeaway at present though. It’s called The White Swan. Seems to be popular.
  4. Nooo! I think my 'tales' are getting a bit samey too. If we all did that we wouldn't have any more holiday blogs.
  5. Agree. The reason why the BA can’t act yet has been explained. A bit of patience guys.
  6. One of the things that I hadn’t really realised until we started sailing on the Broads is how unreliable the wind is compared to sailing off the coast. You can be struggling along one minute without enough wind in your sails then the next minute a gust will take you and you overtake a boat that a few minutes back overtook you. Makes for interesting sailing, but I think a lot of motor boaters think saileys have the same sort of speed control as motors have. Except the wind doesn’t quite play the game.
  7. Isn’t that perhaps a reference to ‘Something nasty in the woodshed’ from a 1930s (1932?) novel ‘Cold Comfort Farm’ by Stella Gibbons?
  8. It’s not that easy to take sails down when trying to keep your boat head to the wind. Not if you have to veer off anyway.
  9. LOL. I know, but semantics or not, ‘several‘ conjures up more than two or three in my little brain. Glad you are sticking around. I find the forum gives me that ‘Broads fix’, at least in the summer when lots of people are posting about their holidays.
  10. Errr..maybe I should have said a ‘few’ pubs, rather than several.
  11. The link to the article in the original post doesn’t work for me, so all the comments are a bit cryptic without that. What are they planning to do?
  12. That’s awful! Hope you have reported it to the Yard. Well done for not ‘naming and shaming’ here.
  13. Only at the Yacht Stations, as far as I’m aware. Don’t think the boat yards would reserve you a place, though it’s always worth phoning up to ask if they have space. I might be wrong about that though. Staying in a boatyard didn’t used to have much appeal to me, until I stayed in NDB’s Yard and found out that it was a lovely peaceful place to be overnight. There are several pubs that will reserve mooring spots, including The Ferry at Surlingham.
  14. What are you picking up the boat?
  15. Oh dear, I hope not! I was hoping you'd get under some bridges. LOL!
  16. No, there aren't any other facilities nearby. I think the village shop and post office closed a few years ago. No other pubs in walking distance as far as I'm aware.
  17. Agree with Jean. It does seem that lots of people just want a mooring near a pub and, in the height of season, that’s a bit unrealistic unless you moor up really early. Shame really. My favourite moorings tend to be those in quieter locations.
  18. Those two meals look really good. What with the excellent weather, sounds like you had a wonderful weekend.
  19. If you are going through the New Cut from Reedham the only place to moor before Somerlayton is Herringsfleet BA moorings, but you can’t access any facilities from there. Nice and peaceful though. I’ve also read somewhere that mooring outside The Bell in St Olaves can be a bit tricky at times, as it’s just below the bridge and the tides are quite strong there so can cause eddies (where the river swirls back on itself). The Duke’s Head, Somerlayton is a bit gastro pubby whereas The Bell in St Olaves is more your standard pub in terms of food. Both have their fans. Depends what you prefer Its not that much further from Somerlayton to Oulton Broad.
  20. Lovely tale and photos again. Royale Emblem. Yes, she is a lovely boat, not the newest, but we found her a very good reasonably priced boat for 5 adults and a dog. Very comfortable and easy to handle from the helm’s perspective. Large comfortable lounge area for the evenings. Also, great to have a ‘larger’ boat that can get underneath bridges. We hired her in 2017. There’s a tale lurking somewhere a few pages back of our adventures on her.
  21. Coo! That sounds serious. Starting up your own Captain’s Blog?
  22. Just remember to come into a mooring against the tide not with it, it’s much easier to control to boat. Another reason why the Aweigh app is handy.
  23. Aweigh does a lot more than just tides. Having just found it for our latest visit I think it’s brill.
