MauriceMynah
This is just a thought I wanted to bounce around... I have a thread running about when I'll be on the boat and was thinking about a thread in the "other place" called "Who's about this weekend" or something similar. That thread suffered from becoming too large as time went on with peeps saying when they'd be on the broads. For each member to post in their own thread when they'd be there is cumbersome, so something in-between might work, the objective being general socialising. What I came up with was "Who's up in Jan?", "Who's up in Feb?" and, "Who's up in Mar?". etc. Sometime in Feb, the "Who's up in Jan" gets deleted and the "Who's up in Apr?" is started. How far in advance we go is pretty variable, as is how long the out dated ones are kept up. What this would acheive (for those who wanted it) would be a quick and easy route to casual meeting ups and swapping beers and insults. Just a thought. and I wondered if it could be automated!

BroadScot
That's one for Jonzo and JawsOrca, MM. I like the idea though. Perhaps with the new software when up and running? Iain

BroadAmbition
Who's 'Up' in Jan/Feb etc could be worded better as Who's 'Afloat' Jan/Feb etc as those of us north of the Broads (Gods country etc) often say 'Who's 'Down' at the weekend if you get my drift Griff

JawsOrca
I think the calendar would be good to use but it's good to know who else is about so whatever people feel comfortable using. I don't think we want to auto delete posts though as this can use a pain for people coming in via search engines (dead links) and it may be interesting to some to look back
jeffbroadslover
A long time back I suggested the idea of a calendar to show who was going to be afloat and when. The response I got was that the problem with showing these details would allow less desirables to know when you would not be at home and for how long. If they were clever enough they may be able to find out the address of your house and know it was likely to be empty!!!! I can agree with these thoughts but also agree it would be nice to know who was likely to be waving at you Jeff
Polly
I generally keep it vague because of the security issue.

JennyMorgan
Perhaps too much information would be handy for the light fingered fraternity?
Guest
It's surprising how much personal information is revealed on forums, family photos, whereabouts, boat locations, even the occasional photo of where members live. It's a sad reflection of society today, but I agree with people on here that are concerned about the security issues. Unfortunately, even one's precise date of birth is becoming something that shouldn't be made too public, since it's now so often used as an additional security question for banks etc.. Many login websites now demand it, for age limit content verification, but then it's a simple matter to shift it by a week or two...... LondonRascal
Personally I think it would be a great idea to have a calendar for showing when people are on the Broads because then at a glance you can see what is going on and help make plans perhaps to join a couple of fellow members for a chat and a drink type thing. Personally I feel if anyone worries about that being used by 'undesirable' people to then plan a burglary of their home that is being very much paranoid. Sure there is always the small possibility of people putting things together and such, but frankly most people here will post general information such as they are from Leeds, or London etc not the part or area of down to giving away street names and so on. If someone knows where someone else lives, then they are likely also privy to knowing when they are away and don't really need a forum to find that out. My Dad will not put our address on an luggage labels for fear a luggage handler at an airport will then know you are away ad where you live the breaking into the house - maybe such does happen, but I think more likely bags go missing and it is handy to have your details on them to reunite than worry of being burgled. As an aside, sadly, where I live there have been many burglaries that are very brazen - often when people are in the house - smash window get in grab what they can and run out. Even car crime has changed. A new breed of criminal seems to have popped up around these parts - smash the sunroof to get in so outwardly as you walk towards the car all looks ok until you see all the glass on the inside and glove box opened its contents strewn about and then the missing glass in the sunroof. In short opportunistic people who know they can be in and out in seconds but will take very much longer for Police to arrive and even then being so prolific won't have the resources to deal with such thus they get away with it to do it again and again. JawsOrca
A few people have started to put trips into the calendar. It's accessible via the toolbar and you will find an "add event" button.. I'll be adding our trips I do think the birthdays should go from here though .. Perhaps like this post if you don't want birthdays and we will remove these

JawsOrca
I removed the Birthday bit on there two as the general consensus is to not have them (and jonzo said too!)..
Polly
I don't think paranoid when being canny about announcing when our home is vacant. We had one mega break-in when on the boat and don't want another. I accept that that one was more to do with local knowledge of us being away, but it makes one careful.
MauriceMynah
Couldn't agree more Pauline. Some people are more vulnerable to burglaries than others, for example, it is rare for this house to be unoccupied, normally if I'm on the boat, Frances is at home. If we are both away, then one of her daughters house sits, so all in all, I don't mind posting when I'm coming to the boat.
JawsOrca
Obviously I understand the concern over security considering my folks recent experience. I think the calendars can be set up to only show to full members only (so you need to be logged in to view) and this means that only members whom have been through the initiation process of full membership will be able to see. I'd thought this should improve the security aspect. This should also be more secure than posting an event on the general forum as I believe the general forum is open to all to view.
