Couple of pics

Hi all,

I was going through a large box of broadland photos mum dad and I had taken over the last 50 years to find that the ducks and rivers had changed little, when I came across these two. the one on the left (I hope it's on the left, I hate scanners!) seems to be of a pub garden, but I can't place it. Any ideas? The pic was taken late 70s I think. The other pic needs no explanation other than how they might go about selling it!

I'd have said possibly the Ferry House at Surlingham. If it isn't, it jolly well could be.

Hmm, river looks a bit narrow for Surlingham? Also looks to be houseboats in the background? I did wonder if it could be the Swan at Horning. The front garden was all grassed years ago. But there again I could be wrong

There looks like something across the river. My first thought was The New Inn, Horning being many years ago. My second was The Kings Head, Wroxham. Could be wide of the mark though.

Oh just seen Howard's remarks, agree it looks too narrow a river for Surlingham Ferry.

New Inn is an interesting thought Iain. The other side of the river would look right certainly. I just can't recall what the pub garden was like. Kings Head is another good thought although I think there may be too may trees to be Wroxham?

Before the flats were built Howard, there were a fair number of trees as you entered the P&H yard.

I was trying to remember boats moored stern on up at Hickling, but the only ones that I can think of were at Whispering Reeds yard.

I'm for the Ferry at Horning. We were there yesterday lunchtime and they've won their case re stern-on mooring for any boats.

Despite pics of boats at the Swan, Gus tells me that it's only the Ferry, apart from the New Inn,  that can moor non-dayboats stern-on.

The pump-out sign with another one below it stating 'not for resale'. Was it ever?

Was a time when fuel prices started to rocket and outpaced the ability of the old pumps to state the correct price for the quantity sold. Was another occasion when we decimalised and thus on both occasions pumps became unsuited to retail sales. The cost of new pumps was telephone numbers to many small yards. We had eighteen boats and for us the possible retail sales quite simply prohibited the purchase of any of the modern pumps on offer at that time. Suitable second-hand pumps just did not exist back then so many yards ceased retail sales.

I would go with the new Inn at Horning.

It,s the only place I can think of that has/had houseboats across the river from a pub

New Inn garden definitely went down to river edge in 1964.

Yes...I also remember the other very well...worked on that quay heading for a number of years on turnround days,,,'Lapwing'
