Tolls

Yeah.  The Moonlight Shadow invoice arrived in my inbox today as well.

Couldn't pay it on line - BA's system keeps crashing.  Oh well, phone call it is .........

Still at least BCBM will reimburse the expenditure.

Yes, my invoice arrived by email today as well.

It will be paid by credit card (no % surcharge) just before the end of March, as usual.

I often defend the BA on here, but I see no reason to pay such a large sum of money before it is due, better in my bank account as long as possible.

I also think it's professional of them to give plenty of notice though, no harm in that at all.

Our on-line reminder came in today too.  The price increase is 5:5% up from last year for 'B.A'

Someone remind me what the national rate of inflation is again?

We first tolled 'B.A' in 2007 - the price for a years toll then was £275, the current price is now marching close to £450.  So in nine years it has gone up by around 59% or 6:5% each year on average.  Can the Ba keep dictating above inflation price increases for infinitum ?

On the plus side it costs less that £1:25 per day - cheap when you look at it that way.    What really irks though is our tender, 9ft (with sails / oars/ outboard) and they want nearly £100 toll for it :norty:

Just had a shock, my new Tolls have just been sent to me via eMail. Has the time really gone that fast ?, and I do believe they've gone up again. This year I've been asked to pay £277.09, quite a bit more than last year. Well, bite the bullet and pay up, or I don't use the boat again, simples really.

Hiya Ray & Carole,

Really sorry peeps, but I started a new topic, "Tolls" and didn't realise you'd already started one, so sorry for that. If I can find out how to delete a topic, I'll go ahead and do it, sorry again.

Don't forget, well over 40%, nearing 50% of your toll goes on Authority overheads, not on maintaining the waterways.

Yes, don't I know it, thanks for reminding me, now in need of a stiff one to keep ones angst under control - Tks JM

I sold my 2.5 honda on the other forum because of the price of a motorised tender. I had never used it. I will not moor at Ranworth or Salhouse so weight and row in. Adding the motor to my 2.3m inflatable added about £60 or so.

Yes indeed, quite an unfair, unjustifiable,  and totally disproportionate hike (triple)  in the tolls when you clamp on a minuscule outboard.

As I've often bored people with on here, the cost of tolling something like your 8ft rubber dinghy with the tiniest of outboards represents about one quarter of the boat and engine's total secondhand value, every year.

Whereas most BA motorised craft tolls represent about one fiftieth to one hundredth of the boat's secondhand value, (eg 30ft cruiser, toll £300'ish, value £15,000 to 30,000).

Small outboard powered tenders and inflatables also have a miniscule impact on the waterways and their  upkeep overheads, no dredging and no long term mooring, being actually removed from the water between occasional uses.

(See, I can moan at the BA about something.... :) )

Strowie, the Broads Plan is open for consultation. A grassroots review of the tolls system would be a worthwhile suggestion, in my humble opinion.

Personally I see all tolls as fantastic value.

The engine on the outboard does move it into another class, it enables its use to be a main boat rather than a tender, How many times have you seen family's out for the week with suitcases aboard, must happen all the time in a 2.5-3m dinghy.

They are not really above inflation rises, what everyone is forgetting is that every part of the Broads Authority suffers from inflation. Boats now contribute a far higher percentage of the overall budget than ever before, due to reduced grants for other unrelated projects that still need to be forced through, and as such must pick up their fair share of all the inflation, there is the 2% on admin costs, 2% of broads rangers costs, 2% of dredging non navigable private broads cost etc. Overall if you add all the 2%'s up it could be as much as 18% of which Boats must pay their fair share. 6% is actually a real bargain.

Can we also not forget that we still issue the ever popular non refundable tolls in order to capitalise on anyone who has the audacity to change there boat mid season. Even if the boat they are selling is leaving the Broads and the Boat they are buying is coming from elsewhere the BA will look after the Toll interest by charging the same person 24 months of Tolls for the same year. now that is a 100% increase that will also have 2% inflation and that has not even been added to the inflation rate for the tolls.

I trust everyone now understands why Broads users are getting below inflation rises at 6%
