  1. Thas as the crow fly bor! The wiggly bits come for free.
  2. I really think this is a local issue and the views of those who live/work there are the only views that have relevance. Whilst it is easy for us outsiders to moan or applaud the application we should respect the right of the locals to influence development of their environment.
  3. I think the "picture postcard" view was mostly about a fine, well kept cottage garden surrounding the cottage & mill. You can't expect all future owners to be green fingered wizards and an un-tended garden would quickly revert to wilderness. If you take away the pretty garden fron the original the new incarnation looks no better or worse than the original.
  4. They do say few boatbuilders could count to ten on account of having fewer fingers than ten.
  5. You get what you pay for so .............. as a visitor you should embrace the higher tariff in the certain knowledge that you are paying for a superior product compared to those on the "paupers" ticket. You can enjoy strutting around and shouting "My ticket's worth considerably more than yous's" and watch the paupery waifs doff there working class caps with envy knowing that their aspirations to one day reach your lofty status is very unlikely to come to fruition. Don't you just love being RICH?
  6. Although I am on a gap year from posting on the NBF I do frequently view their content. They have successfully negotiated a question/answer topic with JP from the BA and I believe a second session is iminent. Perhaps for the sake of the Broads, old rivalries could be put to bed and those who would like to raise questions could do so there?
  7. I've always hankered after an inflatable canoe so that I can poke about in places I've never been before. I could just about scrape together enough to buy the boat but boat + toll is a bit beyond me.
  8. So in summary anything that lives & breathes and ventures beyond the boundaries of their dwelling should either be taxed, insured or banned? Just think of the mouth watering jobs, computer systems and office empires that could be created to police/control all the new taxes etc. Excuse me maam but you and your parambulator have been caught on camera exceeding the pedestrian speed limit, overtaking on a single file path and not displaying a valid tax disc. Maybe it's me but i'm not to sure I like the world some would have us head for.
  9. I'm sorry but I don't consider cyclists to be "them" but "us" ........... are you seriously advocating that your toddler's bike be subjected to "road tax"?
  10. Pedestrians ...... we are ALL pedestrians and ALL benefit from their rights. Cyclists ......... we can ALL choose to be cyclists. The cost of ownership is extremely low. Thus we "nearly" ALL benefit from their rights .... not to mention the reduction in pollution/congestion if we choose to cycle. Cars ....... benefit those who can afford to buy and run one. Therefore it is correct that the car owners are asked to contribute financially to the facilities they enjoy. Boats ...... benefit the few. Often you read on here that boat ownership is akin to a bottomless money pit. It is therefore appropriate to expect boat owners to contribute to the cost of their facilities.
  11. I'm with you on this Marshman, i concur with erverything you said.
  12. Your just worried that the olde worlde christmas charm of Holt will be overshadowed by the showy spectacle of Norwich's northern lights .... Remind me ..... How tall is the Holt christmas tree? Norwich .... bigger, taller, brighter, flashier, busier = BETTER!!
  13. Over engineered for the current demands but maybe it will make more sense when the NDR is completed with the corresponding increase in traffic volumes travelling both ways?
  14. Max Bygraves somes up the situation in his song "When You Come To The End Of A Lollipop". The lollipop equates to your initial purchase of the boat. Licking the lollipop equates to cruising the Broads with Gusto. The last lick equates to ..... I've paid for my boat and mooring and really should go out. The stick equates to ..... I cant be bothered to faff about taking the boat out .... I think I'll just use it as a holiday home. I think there are many lolly sticks moored up in comfy mariners.
  15. NBN is a "clicky" club as opposed to a "Clique" club. Long may it remain so ....................
  16. Quite so ..... I have found the whole topic facinating and Timbo's illustrations very informative.
  17. Clearly some sort of crystal supplying fuel!
  18. I wonder what archeologists yet to come will make of the old bicycle frames & shopping trollies excavated from the upper reaches of broadland rivers? I guess ritual offerings to the god of consumerism will be pretty spot on.
  19. I joined this forum for friendly discussion/debate of many issues & topics related to the Broads. I don't & won't partake in any organisation with an agenda political or otherwise and would feel uncomfortable if the inevitable few were to adopt the role of spokesmen for this organisation on political issues. If an individual wished to raise an issue here with a view to canvassing opinion then that would be welcomed my me.
  20. I have been on the receiving end in a similar situation. On reflection I don't think it's done delibarately or the result of reckless behaviour. Those that find themselves in this position are most probably in a situation that they havn't encountered before and their boat handling skills most likely rate at "novice". Now the sensible thing to do is to slow down or stop and give yourself time to think and possibly take note of some timely advice however there are some (mostly 30-40 year old men) who are unable to admit they don't know and resort to the tried and tested way of proving their manhood by resorting to speed! Shouting at them will only increase the assault on their Ego and further fuel their frantic frenzy! I do feel sorry for those unfortunate enough to be part of their crew and i'm sure thoughts of mutiny must be high on their agenda. I also feel for those that have been affected by the fraca. Unfortunately puttinga novice with a big ego into a big, powerful and heavy vessel can be a recipe for chaos!!
  21. Loverly ............... No nanny state back then
  22. There seems to be a misunderstanding from the mobo drivers that sail boats have little or no control over their destiny. Most sail boat skippers are very skilled in their boat handling and have an intimate knowledge regarding how their boat handles in all types of conditions. Whilst it may inconveniance them to suddenly stop or change direction it really is quite an easy manouver to achieve.
  23. Or maybe a Busy Body revealed thread where the "curtain twitching busy bodies" can be revealed partaking in their favourite passtime ...... poking their nose in.
  24. There is no reasoning in the minds of those consumed with hate and sadly it seems to be inbred into the human species. This all to frequent type of attrocity seems to dull the mind to the lasting human impact to friends and families of the victims. Perhaps an annual world wide day of reflection could be started to remember all the victims of conflict worldwide with a list of notable tragic events along with the numbers of victims. I think we would all be stagged at the number of victims worldwide to these barbaric acts of terror.
  25. In the past tollerance was much more prevelant. People openly tollerated racism, homophobia & sexism..... witness the frequent comedy programs that openly referred to it for laughs!! Witness the culture that allowed celebrities to abuse their fame so that they could indulge their foul sexual perversions. The sixties, seventies was a very violent period with much anti establishment activity ant youth violence. So is it really worse now? Re: staggers & henners ....... it is currently in vouge to spend obscene amounts of money on stag & hen parties. I feel sorry for the participants who feel compelled to cough up their share for the jolly so not unsurprisingly they probably play hard. I actually think, with a few exceptions, our young folk today are a credit to us all.
