  1. I know it's a matter of taste but loud music really needs to be reserved for music venues. There are many enjoyable bands/artists that are very easy on the ear drums.
  2. The thing is as we have generally become wealthier there is a growing need to find something to spend all that wealth on. As a youth my parents aspiration was to one day buy a tv, a fridge, a washing machine and just maybe to have a telephone. It is sad when you see attractive people turning themselves into freek shows, at great expence, by the plastic cosmetic surgeons and I can only guess that they must see something completely different in the mirror to what I observe. Back to the topic of wayward eyebrows ............ If they look silly I will inwardly giggle but I wouldn't be so bold as to share those thoughts with the person concerned. My children have successfully pursuaded me that anything I say, do or think is complete b***ocks.
  3. Not all visitors to Beccles will be aware that it is indeed a gem adjacent to one of the most beautiful stretches of broadland. So a friendly welcome sign pointing out it's assets does no harm at all. Who should pay for the sign I don't have an opinion, but it seems to be a disappointing trend on social media to follow/support the opinions of those who shout loudest. That said, on our forum there is normally a few who will raise an alternative view point which hopefully helps to create a more balanced discussion.
  4. Kfurbank .... interesting ideas however they must be easy to apply and not give the local authority an excuse to set up another expensive department to administer the rules. For me the simplest method would be to add a multiplier to the council tax for any second home registered without a permanant resident. Anyone allowing permanent use of the second home (renting or otherwise) would be exempt. However I feel your idea of limiting the sale of "new affordable housing" to local families & possibly people moving into the area to take up work has much merit.
  5. You know when you ask for an honest opinion and you get a nervous cough ................ Cough And an Erm .............. Ermmmmmmmm after what seems like an eternity you think of something good to say.......... It's very colourful and looks like it was very hard to do. .............................. Sorry but that's my honest opinion. PS thanks for posting it here I hate reading topics that refer to something I can't see or read.
  6. Second home ownership can be very damaging to the local community:- It inflates the cost of local housing rendering it impossible for local youngsters to buy. They contribute very little to the local community ... pubs, post office etc The lack of affordable housing will force youngsters to migrate to large towns & cities adding to the demand for new build in these areas. These wealthy home owners will be in the vanguard of opposition to new develpments for affordable housing in their rural idyll. So no, I don't think the measures you listed deter the purchase of second homes.
  7. Maybe second home ownership should be significantly taxed to discourage wealthy souls from investment and help fund affordable homes in rural areas. It is areas like ours where property prices are inflated by the second home brigade.
  8. People need to live somewhere, if there is insuficiant affordable homes then new ones need to be built along with services including recreational open spaces. Sure, anyone whose house currently overlooks open countryside is going to complain if said open countryside is built on, The urban landscape can be every bit as pleasant to live in as the countryside, perhaps more so, as when I lived in the country there was very little scope for walking over the fields as they were all privately owned and fenced. Of course you could walk the country lanes but there quiet slumber is often threatened by boy racers, car & motorbike, and the 4x4's.
  9. How do you stop the pesky vermin from using your garden as a toilet etc. I'm surrounded by cats and am powerless to stop them using my garden!! Cats really are the filthiest beasts .......... or maybe their owners should do as dog owners do and clean up after them?
  10. So ..... are National Parks created for the enjoyment of people or the preservation of habitat? Perhaps we will end up with publically funded private no go areas.
  11. Gracie Blackbeard & Clipper Morgan the most feared pirates in the East!!
  12. People wern't scared to enjoy themselves in those days!! Is she wearing wooly bathers?
  13. Oh shucks .... when I was a lad I was convinced that she would fall hopelessly in love with me! Then, when I grew up, I was convinced that Kate Bush would invite me round for tea!! Life is soo litered with disapointment,
  14. Maybe we should encourage that chap Pete Diggings to dust off his spade and restart his dirt shovelling ..... me thinks we need to expand ................. could he bring about the norfolk, suffolk &Lincolnshire Broads. May we dream of expanding into Essex? Of course we would need to invest in a bridge building exercise and maybe apply for an EU subsidy?
  15. May all your posts remain gribble free throughout 2017.
  16. We employ the legal profession to argue the letter of the law. I find it impossible to read the legal wordings of the law without shutters descending over my eyes rendering interpretation of the words almost impossible. With regard to the original topic it is essential that any advice given is useful, meaningful & understandable for common people, like me, who just require an easily digestable answer to .... what should I do? Wildfuzz answered in a manner that I found both useful and informative, that does not mean I don't welcome Paladines carefully considered research on the letter of the law it's just that most of the points raised sailed somewhat over my head.
  17. I think the main issue regarding pollution from diesel is that it is worse in built up areas within cities & towns & this is where the majority of people live. Moving over to electric powered vehicles would certainly reduce the pollution in these areas and contribute to reduced costs in the health service for treating respiratory illness. It is easy to climb onboard the petrolhead "Jeremy Clarkeson" bandwagon and claim that electric is more polluting than deisel but if I lived/walked or worked on a busy city centre street I would rather have it filled with queing electrically powered vehicles than filled with dirty, pollution belching deisel cars.
  18. Occasionally one needs to consider whether the legalisation with subsequent control of current illegal substances might help to alleviate the ever growing burden on policing. Indeed a lot of drug pushing occurs directly as a result of the profits associated with illegal trading. As far as I can see the current system doesn't seem to prevent addiction and merely pushes people into the twilight world of the black market & maffia contolled crime rings.
  19. One day we might all adopt a style of clothing that leaves only the eyes peeping through a letterbox in order to protect our privacy ............... Then, of course, a law will be passed to prohibit the wearing of such garments in order to allow snooping to continue. I think the answer can be found at the bottom of a bottle of Bushmills!
  20. What suits one person will not suit another. You are on an adventure of discovery. Why not try it and get first hand experience. Norwich is a must visit place. After much exploring, eating & dining you'll be glad to flop into your boat and look forward to planning your next visit. But as previously advised unless you enjoy the clubbing scene best avoid friday & saturday nights.
  21. I dabbled with a NAS drive thinking it would be ideal. It never quite lived up to expectation. Wireless access is very slow (slower the furher you are away from the router). It was very complex to set up and I never managed to tweek it, the software & router to allow remote access. I continue with external hard drives. I have used Macrium reflect (free version) to do backup's but it recently slowed my machine so much that I have stopped using it. I now use bvckup 2 (paid version) It back's up specific folders very efficiently but doesn't provide a restore everything solution without re-installing windows & programs. However as windows benefits from a clean install periodically I am now happy to reinstall windows & programs and then recover my data from the bvckup backup files. To ensure that your preferred backup solution will work create a dummy file, make sure your backup routine has run, delete the dummy file and try to restore it from your backup. If you can't then your backup routines may need a rethink.
  22. I would hope that those who post negative views aboat an establishment have first complained to the manager/owner. If still no satisfaction then maybe a negative review is acceptable.
  23. Not a silly question at all. For the novice broads sailor this can seem very confusing especially if your not sure whether you are heading towards or away from the sea.
  24. What very sad news ,,,,,, 2016 has been a truly awful year and I will be very glad when tomorrow dawns,
  25. As I don't know what the scores on the doors mean or how and when assessments are made I will continue to try the establishments before I make judgements, I really don't want some oik in a suit telling me what is or is not good for me!
