    Flood Planning

20 odd years ago there was talk of a barrier across the yare at Yarmouth to stop tidal surges. Bit like most things in Brittan we don’t look further down the line everything is so short sighted unfortunately. I guess a barrier would work for so long but for me the problem lies with water coming in over the coast and in to horsey. Also just asking will the new bridge at Yarmouth stop a bit of tidal flow or make the tide run even more quicker in the harbour ?
  2. It’s so sad to see what’s happening at hemsby I can help but wonder if the outer harbour at Yarmouth is having an affect on tidal flow and with higher tides and rough seas all these circumstances coming together not helping hemsby.
  3. This is a very interesting thread thanks. im hoping to be a Hampton Safari owner at some point ? They are certainly an interesting boat with heaps of room inside I’ve always wanted to own a Safari from the age of about 6 so thirty years on it’s still an ambition of mine.
  4. Yes I remember seeing two on the broads one is definitely still on the broads. I love this thread it’s interesting to see where the boats have ended up

    Another 10%

It seems to me that I’ve missed the boat when it comes to owning one pardon the pun. if costs like this keep going up year on year owning a boat on the broads will be just a dream especially if I have scraped the money together once I take it out I’m going to have to pay for my mooring else where ! id like to know what percent pay rise the head honcho is having this year ?
  6. Just picking up on what mouldy has said about the water levels I think 20 years ago the talk of creating a flood barrier at Yarmouth would have been the best option but it wasn’t picked. It’s quite amazing 100 miles over the North Sea Holland has bridges that raise for one boat whenever and locks and flood barriers but we have a tired out network of infrastructure be it bridges / moorings etc. I know this won’t happen but the broads needs lots of money spent on infrastructure to persevere it for the future years ie flood barrier new bridges at reedham / somerlayton and the two low bridges at Yarmouth need to go. Maybe wroxham bridge aswell ( oh I’ve said it now lol! ) wroxham could be replaced with a Holland style lifting bridge that lifts twice a day oh I’m day dreaming !
  7. I think bad summer weather will be BA answer to rising the tolls again
  8. Hi Kate you’re absolutely right about some areas are scruffy now! Take the riverside park at wroxham it’s a total disgrace half is shut off and overgrown and the half that is open doesn’t get mown regularly it’s not like it was when it first opened the circle gravel area with benches around if this was my first impression of wroxham while waiting to pick up a boat from a yard in wroxham I’d certainly be thinking what is everywhere else like. its also again in wroxham the precinct all the flower tubs have been left empty and are full of weeds it just looks bad to a visitor where I live we have aylsham in bloom who look after all our flowers tubs shame this can’t be done in wroxham especially as it’s supposed to be the capital of the broads.
  9. That was probably Aylsham you biked around. Aylsham station was knocked down in 1989 For building of the Bure valley railway wroxham to Aylsham. Have you travelled on the bure valley it’s a good day out for train lovers. Roy
  10. Yes it’s very very sad to see such a great show finishing and it’s one of bbc radio Norfolk’s most popular shows with such a following I was lucky to be a clue holder in April and met the lovely Julie it seems as though the cut backs on the radio haven’t been thought out ! By reading their Facebook page there are lots of unhappy listeners at the decision and bbc radio Norfolk will loose lots of listeners once this change happens I know I’m not going to be listening to the station after the 10th September sad!!!
  11. We listened to bbc radio Norfolk treasure quest and they visited you this morning looking at the pictures on their web page I’ll have to visit next year when is the wroxham show thanks

    A Bargain?

Thanks Clive for pointing out some of the pitfalls I’d not thought if a boat was not fully booked the boat would not be in the right location. Im thankful I don’t employ people my business is just me. I can imagine people don’t want to work weekends that’s the reason I started working for my self.

    A Bargain?

Do any northern boat yards own any southern yards/ marinas I can only think of Clive with cove in brundall and horning pc. I think silver line and Richardson’s should have done that rather than move all boats to Stalham. I think by what I’ve herd most of brundall is owned by James frazer now.

    A Bargain?

I agree with scrumpychedder about a large north hire yard opening a smaller yard on the south I’m also surprised no north boat yard has not done this and offered a one way cruise from north to south etc in a week that way some hirers wouldn’t be going over the same ground. More infustructure is definitely needed as I’m afraid nowadays people look for more gone are the days a dinghy and a pair of binoculars would entertain children unfortunately most children want WiFi 24/7 and entertaining. I really think wroxham bridge should be disposed of ( i know it’s not ever going to happen) and replaced with a slightly higher bridge to open up the moorings that are the coltishall side of the bridge this would surely benefit wroxham if more people could moor private or hire also the public toilets there could have a shower block for boaters built there too bit like Loddon and provide more facilities for boaters.
  15. For the anniversary show you could have the mtb 102 and a couple of wherrys on show. Maybe a woodie doing river trips aswell just out of interest what is the oldest woodie on the broads not including wherrys and yachts ( I bet it’s a Herbert woods )
  16. What lovely boats and what broads history tied up there and great pictures I had totally forgotten about the show this year I must and will attend next year.

    Goodwind

Can we have some pictures I love a restoration thread
  18. I visited brundall a couple of weeks ago not been there for 20 years and was really surprised to see water lilies growing in Hoboroughs dyke I guess the waters cleaner and maybe less salty?
  19. Hi I know some forum members own Hampton Safaris I wanted to pick their brains on the running cost of these fantastic little boats eg broads toll and insurance etc thanks
  20. I know the pontoons would be a initial outlay but I’m trying to look to the future rather than short fixes which is what this country is very good at doing at the moment we need to invest in longterm ideas pontoons must cost less than maintaining quay heading?
  21. Floating pontoons are the answer BA needs to think about adding new mooring with pontoons if they are away from the bank say 3ft (if enough room not a problem down south) then there wouldn’t need to be any quay heading only where the ramp attaches to the bank I know they would need to pay a rent to the land owner if access is on the land.

    Day Boats Only

Yes that was the case a hire boat could use another’s yard for their overnight stop so that meant many places had mooring options for the broads hirers like wroxham if a boat couldn’t pass under the bridge or brundall had countless yards with mooring options.

    Day Boats Only

Unfortunately this could be another valuable mooring partly lost to bigger cruisers I can’t see why this mooring can’t be a stern on mooring as further down the river at the new in its stern on mooring if this was implemented then there would be more room for all types of boats. Looking at BA mooring on the whole of the broads there seems to be plenty above wroxham bridge which a lot of this year have been fairly empty as many boats can’t get under the bridge I think the BA really need to look at making some more mooring elsewhere on the broads but with pontoons as surely they are cheaper to maintain ?
  24. Looking at the long term forecast its not looking good till mid August weather seems set in this westerly flow and windy too. But im not one to take note of the long term forecast as it’s often wrong 🤞
  25. That’s a shame I used it only Monday they closed the Aylsham bank and now have a lady sitting in a dark room in the drill hall in Aylsham for Barclays Bank enquires when the problem involves using a atm she walks to town with you to use tsb atm what a joke that is I feel sorry for the older generation who don’t do online banking companies nowadays are all profit driven !!!
