Lovely photos Jay. Certainly looks peaceful out there. Have moored at Cantley a couple of times but never overnight. Is there much current being on the main river? Does it run fast there?

It's lovely SwanR 

The current runs well through Cantley, the drop I believe is a couple of feet, and I have experienced it flooded and strong winds pinning you to the moorings at times, but it is well worth an overnighter.

The industrial image of the factory is another different face of the broads I believe but it doesn't intrude at all, I'm sure it's not for everyone though

I must admit the proximity of the factory has always put me off and so its one of the rare places where I've never stopped. You've encouraged me to give it a try though.

Friday 3rd August

Another sunny morning began at Cantley with the usual routines before coffee and a sit in the morning sunshine with the roof down.

At around 0945 I was fully prepared for a slow journey to Oulton Broad where I was going to be picking up my sister and brother in law to join me on board for the weekend. 

Heading down the Yare towards Reedham the rivers were busy and we had a queue on for Reedham swing bridge opening and allowing incoming boats to pass through.

I headed left after the bridge for the longer route around the Berney Arms, Burgh Castle and St Olaves, rather than the New Cut, the entire journey was quiet8 foot at St Olaves bridge

as was the stretch from Herringfleet to Oulton.

I moored up at the Wherry hotel moorings rather than the yacht station, whilst the yacht station has better moorings I like the view of the broad offered by the hotel moorings.

Additional fenders applied to the stern to protect the boat I headed over to the hotel to pay and of course grab a quick beer. Or three.

Once my sister arrived and unpacked it was an evening out in the bars before heading back to the boat to bed.

Saturday 4th August

In the words of the London Rascal "a quick update for you", being with the family today I haven't paid much attention to taking pics and stuff so forgive me. 

Normal service will be resumed tomorrow.

So a slightly overcast but warm morning began on Oulton Broad

and a very relaxed start, coffee and toast was enjoyed as I sorted the dog, rubbish and water, we eventually set off at around 1050 and headed off towards Loddon.

As we passed Somerleyton at 1200 it seemed silly to not stop off for a quick dinnertime drink or two, so we headed to the Dukes Head for a drink.

Over a beer or two

it was decided (not by me) we was heading back to Beccles for the evening, so returning to the boat I turned around and headed back down the Waveney to Beccles.

Arriving, the Yacht Station was full bar one mooring, so claiming our spot on the playground side we headed into town for a family beer or two.

I will update properly once more as of tomorrow.

Returning by 1130 to where I started earlier that morning at Beccles I headed up the River Waveney, destination unknown

It was fairly busy along the lower reaches of the Waveney but quietened down as I approached the Waveney Centre.

Doesn't time fly when you are having fun. I hadn't noticed it was 1230, I wasn't interested in any dinner, it was ruddy well past beer o'clock, so I opened a bottle of Ghost Ship. I suppose I am allowed to put a picture of that up seeing as it isn't a manly premium lager

So beer, sunshine, the company of my beautiful Grace  water and a boat, what more could you want?

The dog was in need of a rest stop, Somerleyton was full so I carried on, reaching Herringfleet moorings an old guy on his own was struggling to keep hold of his boat as it tried to drift away, he was holding onto his line and seemed in some distress.

I know I could have taken photos or a video, but i preferred the more traditional way of quickly mooring up at one of the available moorings and ran over to offer him some assistance. A few moments later his boat was safely secured to the mooring and all was good again.

Isn't this friendly compassion part of why we love the broads? Everyone helping each other?

A brief chat and his offer of thanks, and I was soon on my way again, oh yes I had a couple more beers too

Sunday 5th August

Part 1

Sunday morning I was to drop my sister and brother in law back off at Oulton Broad in order for them to head back home so an early morning began in the continuing sunshine in Beccles Yacht Station sorting the dog and preparing for the 0815 departure.

Coffee in hand I set out as everyone else continued to sleep with the roof down and enjoying the Waveney river back to Oulton in the early sunshine 

The river was pretty quiet and we made slow steady progress enjoying the beautiful scenery

arriving in Oulton and mooring at the empty Wherry Hotel moorings at 1015 and bid farewell to our departing visitors.

I’m not going to lie- I don’t like looking at these pictures.

Been home 9 days now and really disappointed to see that the great weather has continued after we left!

Good to see you are having a great time though :-)

Having moved Thunder north from this year we did not see ES this year but looks like she is getting plenty of use!

The river is beautiful for sure and they are all good spots to stop.

Somerleyton is a personal favourite of mine, Oulton Broad is lovely although I'd suggest avoiding on a Friday and Saturday night if possible when the weekend crowd turn out for a night out (unless that is your thing).

Not that it is bad at all but it is more pleasant when the weekend drinkers aren't having their night out, particularly for me having children with me.

WRC is also very pleasant in my view too.

Matt, the good news is that the warm weather is with until October so those of us with an 8% share get a decent Autumn week too  :-)  Great pix and looking forward to early Sept

Sunday 5th August

Part 2

Leaving the Wherry moorings after my sister had departed at 1030 the yacht club had all begun to do whatever it is those flappy things do all over the broad and so taking a long route around the edge I was able to just about keep out of the way.

Turning right at the end of Oulton Dyke and heading up the Waveney it was time to begin to head up north. 

Low water at Yarmouth today was 1010, it was currently 1045. Oops. Oh well.

It wasn't until around St Olaves that I began to fight the incoming tide and it made fairly slow progress from there

Breydon was pretty quiet and the progress slow without pushing the engine so I sat back and just enjoyed the day.

I enjoyed it so much that it was gone 1300 hours, mid Breydon when I popped my first beer (invading finger may be seen too)

At around 1400 hours I reached the bridges of Yarmouth and proceeded through. The height markers showing 7'3" my air draft a comfortable 6'10". The now strong incoming tide helped push me on up the Bure and I passed a few hire boats along the way.

Stracey Arms was fairly busy, I hear they have done some work there since I last dropped in so I think a stop on the way back South will be in order later in the week.

The rest of the journey was pleasant, as expected much busier already than darn sarf

As I passed through Acle, I expected to find no moorings.

And I was correct.

Well almost. Just as I was reaching the last few filled spaces on the Pedro's moorings, a Brooms boat began to depart, so a quick 180 degree turn and we found the only spot available.

Rhond anchors once more deployed (who could trust any of the posts there) and the £10 mooring fee paid (£5 refundable on food in Pedro's) I had a quick shower and then set out for a beer in Pedro's beer garden before crossing the road and sitting for the rest of the evening outside the Bridge Inn.

We all ate in the Bridge that night, a 2 hour delay on food was in place and it was pretty accurate, ordering around 7pm we received our food about 9pm, very nice it was too.

Back to the boat for a little conversation before it was off to bed around midnight.

It certainly was. In fairness they did warn us before we ordered and we was staying all night anyway.

We was pleased we waited as it was very nice and there was a good atmosphere in the garden.

The first summer in seven years that I haven't hired a boat other than a day boat, and even than it was back in mid-June just before the heatwave ... it even rained that morning!!!

That’s a shame Jean. Was reading earlier today that the Met office think we might continue with higher than normal temperatures until October..of course that’s not saying anything about possible rain.

Monday 6th August

In contrast to the previous day today turned into a quiet relaxed day of very little.

The usual routines completed we had a sit in the sunshine as we had our morning coffee before we eventually decided to set off from Acle at around 0930.

The plan was to head up to Potter Heigham and then hire a canoe or day boat to head through the bridge and up Hickling and more.

A slow cruise to Potter Heigham as I noted how much busier it already was in comparison to how the week previous had been on the South.

There was plenty of space as we arrived at the first set of quiet moorings as you enter Potter Heigham and so I moored us up and we headed into the village.

As everyone else went into Lathams I took the dog into the shaded beer garden of the Norada pub to give the dog a rest from the heat as she struggles at the best of times.

After a short while everyone returned but by then we had all come to the conclusion it was far too hot for the dog to be stuck in a boat in the sun so instead I had a pleasant afternoon talking with fantastic company as everyone laid reading and relaxing.

As the evening drew closer we headed back out for a  few more beers before returning to the boat for tea and then to bed.
