Salhouse Broad, The Good, The Bad And The Disturbing

So, after returning from the south via Stracey's Mill, we decided to spend a night up Wroxham way. Salhouse Broad was the target mainly due to our stay in May.

Pleased to see the bank by the little hut empty, we decided to stern moor there.

All fine as the heading started to fill, Two families together in separate boats moored on our port, a two boat gap on our starboard.

Two big party boats arrived, full of blokes and beer, moored further along, nearest to the hire point. A small party erupted but in no way too loud. That was reserved for the campsite boom box that drifted dub step music to sleep by.

We watched in horror as another big boat full of blokes entered at full speed and targeted the gap to my right and proceeded to demonstrate a handbrake turn to stern moor. Totally missed the gap and hit my boat hard on the bow while those on the back burst out laughing. I launched counter measures and they disappeared back to Horning.

Then as the gloom gathered, another hire with a perfect touch, moored in the gap. All at peace.

Until my smoke alarm went off. After much blowing on the thing I went exploring. Five, yes Five, BBQs lit behind each boat. Looked like a bombing run. Strange how that is not thought of as anti social.

Now dark, distant music and the murmur of the boys down the end, now to bed.

Until that is someone decided to walk over my boat!

Once again to arms, I rushed out to be greeted by the lady on the next boat. "Drunk woman from the campsite walking on the boats." she said.

So i doubled check the moor lines and chucked out the mud weight.

Conclusions?

I'd try to moor over the far side away from the main paths and campsite. Also i'd think about mooring on the island on the main drag.

That’s not a good tale . Plenty places to go for a rowdy holiday , the broads isn’t one of them .
And my Mums ashes are in Salhouse broad , so they better start showing some respect 😒

Hope you still manage a lovely night , you are at least still on the broads , and I’ve got work tomorrow 😢

Shame there isnt a little face showing anger because that is what I would have clicked.       Salhouse is one of our most favourite places of sanctuary in that part of the Broads.     Wroxham is always manic but generally speaking Salhouse is always good.    Even having the trip boats passing with their blaring music at least you know once they are gone they are gone.

I was in Lathams earlier in the week lots of large disposable BBQs for sale. Inconsiderate people will always find a way to be a pain to the majority who are quietly going about their business. Unfortunately it's becoming more common in this modern world. I must be getting old.

Thinking about the BBQs, were they those portable ones,  I thought they were not sold anymore.

There is a difference between a "disposable" BBQ and a "portable" one.

A disposable BBQ is a single-use foil tray, that sits directly on the surface or ground they are on. These tend to be carelessly discarded along with the hot charcoal, so having the potential to cause fires. Also, the transmission of heat into the ground can cause dry grass to burn and underground fires to spread.

A portable BBQ is for multiple use, and is raised off the ground on legs of some form. This prevents the spread of heat and  grass or underground fires. I would suggest there is also less inclination for users to dispose of the coals carelessly, but by no means is that a given.

As for there sale being banned, my local Asda has a stack of them you can still buy.

Like most things properly used there should be no problem. When there is a very high fire risk no open flame bbq should be used.

Being on my own I use disposable bbq,s with a proper stand. Here is one of mine from last summer on a teak table. No problem.

For me, it’s the stern on aspect for the BBQs. Instead of being mid boat length away from each other, they was mid stern distance.
They was not one use but on stands.
I guess the point is “is it anti social “to have that many going at once?

how can I moan at someone’s engine running for hours on end if it’s running the same time as I’m inflicting my cooking on my neighbours?

is loud music worse than bellows of smoke when first lit?

Glad to see you're not off your food when on your own :default_biggrin:

Kindest Regards Marge and Parge

I agree, it's completely unacceptable, all of it. People who do this make me cross, as well as the bad behaviour it gives hirers a bad name.

Running over boats when drunk is a tragedy waiting to happen too, that is complete stupidity

Chris, that food looks amazing, where's me invite? :default_biggrin:
