Charlie, I fully appreciate that, it just seems to me if you are going to put a stop to one type of licence, then you should have the infrastructure in place to issue the replacement type of licence to maintain controls over pest species before you stop the previous licence type. In some ways I can agree with the theory of the stoppage of the general licence type, it gave widespread powers for pest control, but allowed pretty indiscriminate margins for that control, at least if you have to apply for a licence for the particular pest that you are controlling, then closer tabs can be kept upon the controls in place. as for not issuing any of the new licences that replace the general one yet, that to me seems either very short sighted, as the pests will continue to proliferate, or an indication that the consequences of the ban were not thought through and that the infrastructure does not yet exist to enable them to issue the new type licence. Let us hope they get their fingers out and get that sorted, before the pest problem becomes out of control. I do have to wonder if the use of hawks to control pigeon numbers falls under these licences too, after all you could argue that the hawks are just doing what comes naturally when they predate upon pigeons. I would imagine that once the damage suites start coming in for costs for destroyed crops and such due to the non issuing of the new licences, then fingers will suddenly start getting pulled out. using an example from your document, if one football club sues for loss of income from one match which cannot be allowed because health and safety conditions cannot be met due to lack of pest control due to a licence not being issued, that will probably amount to damages in the millions, I wonder how long NE can last under such pressures.
  2. one presumes that in the absence of general licences, that for each case a specific licence would need to be enacted, I guess the question is do NE have the staff to issue these licences in a timely fashion to avoid problems

  5. The Q, Don't assume that it was BT installing Fibre Cabinets, my company do that too, and BT do come by to connect them to their network. that said I dont see one of ours listed in that area.
  6. I have a few sets of pmr radios that I am happy to lend out on the cruise in company (about 10 sets) to maintain communications.

I used to have a 'Truckers Atlas' that showed all the low bridge heights across the country, at the time I was driving a transit parcel van with a roofrack and had an air draught of around 10 foot 6" (it was a while back) so the atlas was useful, though to be fair there werent many bridges it couldnt get under. there was however a problem finding an MOT centre that had enough height above their lift, or used a pit under the van to inspect the bottom.

Well that's all the safety advice passed out, there are some lovely spots all over for wild mooring, you could do worse than mudweighting on Barton broad ( as you come down from Stalham, just on the left as you enter the broad), there are some posts marking the channel, this is quite a popular spot for mudweighting up, just go a boats length out of the channel and you will be fine (dont do this on Breydon water though as that will rapidly leave you aground.)
  10. at salhouse broad they have handy concrete slabs to sit disposable barbecues on, also dont use the wooden quay heading as that too can catch alight, and the roof of the boat or sitting on the gas locker is also a bad idea.

I have wild moored with a mudweight down at the front and a rope tied to an overhanging branch at the back, just off shore. but yes if you are fishing mid broad, you will need two mudweights to stop the boat swinging, just ask and the yard should be happy to help, same as when you are solo helming it is fine to ask for longer mooring lines. as a note to those that hire from Martham Boats, they usually only have 1 stern mooring line attached (the other will be in a locker), so dont forget to rig the second before you set off and run the lines into the cockpit, their bow lines will stop short of being able to get into the prop too
  12. I sometimes use a huge breakfast to enable me to keep going through the day until a smallish main meal at the end of a day, a good breakfast can set you up for a hard days work.

I would like to think that even hiring solo that if I did hit another boat, it would be just a gentle touch, rather than a full blown hit, running solo does create more problems to solve when mooring, but you would still only want to be moving very slowly if at all when you got to the point of stepping off with the ropes. I can see you might have issues getting off a lee mooring single handed, as you cant always spring off using a bow rope, while at the same time controlling the boat, but you can still do things slowly enough to be more careful. that said, things can go wrong and you can get in all sorts of fixes. it is also down to perception, when does a gentle touch of fenders while reversing into a tight mooring spot change in perception to being rammed by an inconsiderate boater, to some a gentle nudge of the fenders, may be seen as being rammed by the offender, who would then have trouble seeing in what way they had offended, sometimes when getting into a space the boats to either side may have shifted slightly narrowing the gap, so would reversing into this space be seen by some as having their boat hit by another, when in truth the reversing boat was just moving those to the sides back into their spot. I have been on a boat at potter where the pilot brought the boat alongside another craft so he could disembark, and the touch was a lot less than gentle, but not hard enough to say he hit it, so it makes me ask the question, when does a touch turn into a hit?
  16. well when you compare it to the current grumpy old gits Lads week in october, what do we do, we head from pub to pub, play darts , shove ha'penny etc etc, we take great care of the boats most of them are returned better than they left the yard, upgrades such as led lighting courtesy of Robin, and a complete snagging list of faults we didnt get round to fixing on our return (sticky door handles and the like), we have a good time, but are courteous to other boaters and apart from minor things (such as the dinghys rudder breaking in our hands last year - to be fair the previous screws into rotten wood and gaffer tape repair the boat yard sent it out with - failed)) we treat the boats well too.

I witnessed aggressive driving on the A11 one trip back from Norfolk, a car was overtaking me, and had barely got a car length clear of me when he changed back to my lane, this upset the other car who had been right on his bumper, as he too tried to cut in in front of me and undertake the first car, I was doing about 65mph at this point. the second car complained loudly at being cut up, and proceeded to overtake the first car, then pulled in front of it and slammed his brakes on. I calmly pulled out into the fast lane and continued at the same speed I had been proceeding past both of them, while they had an argument as to who had been in the right and who had been in the wrong (both of them to my mind) if that is the standard they are driving it is no wonder they are too busy to see roundabouts. yes I do have a dash cam too.
  20. you ought to try the M25, accidents are a daily occurrence, usually several a day somewhere around the M25. I believe the general standard of driving has dropped, its either that or some drivers just have a dont care attitude towards other drivers and assume that everyone will get out of their way while they do what they want, then are surprised when someone doesnt - or cant, or road conditions dictate that they should slow down, but rules dont apply to them. of course some laws always apply- the laws of physics and the law of gravity.

  23. I dont think the software likes spaces, or certain punctuation items either, if you put the username you wish to use in the search it should find any other instances, otherwise pm me the username you wish to change to and I will see if I can find why it wont allow it.
  24. i went on the tom tom site and there was an update to prevent failure, but it told me mine was fine.
