  1. Not on a hire boat maybe but both have visitor moorings.(you need a tender for aldeburgh though) I like southwold but it's 70% holiday homes now, not been to aldeburgh but been past on the way to snape from orford.
  2. I said sew not toe, sounds similar..
  3. Phone calls from unknown numbers go as follows. "You have reached a number that doesn't care about ppi and hasn't had a recent accident, press 1 to p1ss off, press 2 if you actually want to talk to me" Usually followed by "brrrrrrrrrrrrr" they're gone then. Not so polite if I'm in a bad mood!
  4. Sew what! Sorry couldn't resist.
  5. Don't try gently walking down that slipway as there isn't a slipway there, it's the old ferry dock and it will get a lot deeper quicker than the average slipway.
  6. Best advice for summer holidays is...... Stay south! Oh yeah and congrats on your bit of a boat, a bit of a boat is more of a boat than most people own just don't even think about owning a captains hat!
  7. Get a gsm relay box and you can phone the heating when last orders is called, I have one set to go for an hour so call it from the pub and arrive to a toasty boat and it will go off by itself.
  8. Also worth noting that diesel heaters coke up less and smell cleaner on paraffin instead of diesel, as you're not sharing a tank you can use what you like.
  9. Use a portable outboard tank with bayonet connector so it can be filled on land, bayonet covers the shut off too. Best stored in a drained locker but in use it's allowed by bss.
  10. That moulding don't look half bad Clive, a sort of pregnant evinrude.... Was that the motor you extended the leg on? (or was it a shortening job, memory's going with age). I'm surprised that alternator gets enough cooling airflow under there, how long has it been like that?
  11. Precautions wise don't do it just before HW on a big spring tide or you could be there a few weeks before the next tide floats you again. When I went up to snape from orford I did it a couple of days before full springs to be sure of plenty of water and the next tide being bigger than the last just in case.
  12. Not actually knowing the situation I wasn't going to be so bold as to assume male ownership, that would be sexist without actually knowing the owner.. (ranks of stirrers officially joined)
  13. Older vhf licenses will need the upgrade course for modern vhf sets with dsc, not that you are likely to use any dsc functions for a trip to lake lothing or as if anyone ever checks the operators certificate, you are only likely to get caught out if you don't have the ships license and get asked for your callsign (very rare) fixed ship radio license is done online and free and automatically issues you a callsign and mmsi. I wouldn't venture out to sea or into a working harbour without a vhf, you can call a harbour on a phone but can't keep a listening watch on a phone which builds up a good picture of whats moving and where before you get too close. My phone is purely giffgaff Clive so not a clue.
  14. My chartplotter loses an hour and comes back again half hour later each time I have crossed the thames estaury, I have worked out it's timezone was on auto so when it got too far from land changed to gmt as it wasn't sure which country it was in. Always just north of the sunk sand crossing till the south of foulgers gat.
  15. On mud close the loo flush intake first, I sat in mud at maldon on my old boat and the gas from below bubbles up into the loo and stinks. Roger sand in the wash is a regular spot for cricket for the witham boaters, I know a couple of crews that have bbq'd on scroby sand. If doing ot for underwater maintenance I think it's called careening or something.
  16. That one was removed by BA after they posted a 28 day notice on it, it first appeared on postwick wharf dropped in by hiab I believe, sank once there and got raised by BA, then got loose and wound up caught up on roots upstream from ferryhouse. It was a project boat as there was an engine in it but not fitted and lots of rusted tools in there.
  17. He jumped in to push????? https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/river-wensum-boat-drama-police-fire-1-6188282
  18. Lost the dog 2 months ago, with old age he preferred to stay with a dog sitter for longer outings, there will be another once we get the next holiday out of the way and it will be another rescue mut. Moor at thorpe st.andrews nowadays.
  19. Hi Clive, behave yourself you're not on ouseabout now you know....... Dave.
  20. I have a couple of previous ale trail t shirts and never touched a drop of woodfordes in the attempt, I had john smiths, guiness, and even just breakfast in one pub and still got the stickers, it's just how you ask. Asking nicely can work but asking annoyingly over and over again is really successful..... I always wear my woodfordes t shirts when in southwold to cheer adnams up.
  21. Not on their own anyway, I think it's called "cruising with carers" or something....
  22. I believe they did paint the rails white but they put the paint on upside down.
  23. All that is needed is bigger engines, they all fit under with enough power. Insurance is another matter......
  24. What engine and drive configuration is probably the first question for sea use. My princess 30ds is on shafts with a pair of 150hp volvos and can do fairly well in most sensible conditions, I have done sea in a far worse handling boat and wouldn't want less power now.
  25. According to the link it's Jocelyn 3 which as far as I know is still on blocks in st.neots marina with holes in the bottom, I'm now intrigued but can't check for a week as currently moored in Dover marina.
