  3. Agreed Colin, As a forum we see many new members that are very keen to get all the advice freely given by older members of the boating community, they ask about planning a route, where to visit, what are the does and don'ts of boating, sadly there are others that are new to it all and steam ahead knowing it all, will not take any advice and subsequently loose out on the delights of the Broads. As you rightly say "You can lead a horse to water" Regards Alan
  4. Hello Colin, There were a few videos on the Richardson's website introduction, technics including mooring and lines etc. Check out their first timer information. http://www.richardsonsboatingholidays.co.uk/first-timers/ Regards Alan
  5. Hello Peter, Are these an option for the boats? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/281980537995?chn=ps&dispItem=1&adgroupid=43677705735&rlsatarget=pla-325095017979&abcId=1128946&adtype=pla&merchantid=7220154&poi=&googleloc=1006964&device=c&campaignid=857250873&crdt=0 http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/couplings-modular.html Regards Alan
  6. It is not only hirers that need tuition on the Broads, In 2001 after 25 years of narrow boating I bought our share in Ranworth Breeze, out training consisted of doing figure 8's on Hoverton Little Broad (Black Horse Broad). No mooring with or against the tide and wind, rudimentary rope-work etc. These days if I give training to new owners I can spend anything from 4 to 6 hours with them practicing port, starboard and stern mooring Boating like all other things in life is a leaning curve, all of us had to lean at some time or other and occasionally we can still get it wrong. Regards Alan
  7. After looking at the various webcams this morning, it is another dull day on the Norfolk Broads. There is plenty of space for mooring at the Waveney River Centre, but the campsite is very full mostly large tents. Dull or not I would rather be on the rivers today than sat in office. Regards Alan
  8. According to the BBC the search has been called off. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-41093906
  9. Hello Andrew, Andy (London Lad) answered my PM and he says he will be in touch with you. Regards Alan
  10. Hello Monica, Yes Judith was great, she made our curtains a couple of years ago from material we managed to source. Sadly after their move to Acle; Judith after her husbands electrical business took off in a big way decided to help her husband in the company rather than the excellent work she did on canopies and furnishings. Regards Alan
  11. How true Vaughan. It is only when you operate everything on a boat that you find out any problems. Take for example our canopy it was renewed in 2010 using the original fame. Sadly the company that made it (I will not name them) it is doubtful that they have ever had to remove sections out of a canopy. The leading edge of the zips on both rear side sections are directly behind the fame poles, this makes it very difficult to put the zip in, Tan really struggles with these, so it is down to me. If the section had been made an inch to either side of the pole it would have made it so much easier. The rest of the canopy is perfect. Regards Alan
  12. Hello Andrew, I have just send londonlad a message on your behalf for him to contact you. The way to contact a forum member is to click on there logon name in a topic, opening there profile pick the option to send them a message. Regards Alan
  13. As already said by a number of forum members, we do not know the facts. Most of us know however that the current is very strong at the St Olaves Bridge and the moorings for the Bell Inn, great care needs to be taken both at the bridge and the moorings, especially the moorings where it can be difficult to moor and more so to get away from the moorings, the current can push you towards the bridge. With all bridges you tend work on a safety margin, in the case of Ranworth Breeze we suggest to all of owners allow for 10 foot at all bridges (we have an air draft of 9 foot 8 inches with the canopy and masthead down). Skippers are not the only ones to get it wrong, we have had bad advice from both Reedham & Yarmouth in the past, so I tend to do my own calculations and pay close attention to the height boards. Regards Alan
  14. If you are going to be on the southern Broads we might see you around, we are on the boat from the 12th September. Regards Alan
  15. Hi John, Although we have at some time visited that area, it is so long ago, if it was the South Hams then I could have been of help. Regards Alan
  16. Hello Jocave, You will have to measure the diameter of your pedestal, you will find out that there are many different sizes, I was looking for a similar fitting to be used on the pedestal to make a footrest. Regards Alan
  17. Hello Cliff, Welcome to the forum. Regards Alan
  18. Hello Colin welcome to the forum, please tell us a little about yourself and your boating on the Norfolk Broads. Like yourself I came to this forum quite a few years ago for the same reason, new members were always alienated in one way or another. Regards Alan
  19. I am totally with you regarding wave power solutions and make more of hydro electric systems on lakes & loch's. Regards Alan
  20. Stella the only drink I will not consume, oh I forgot Carling in tins since they changed the recipe a couple of years ago, anything else is fair game. I like the practice in some of the pubs in Scotland of having a small sample before you decide on pint. Regards Alan

  25. A few years ago I read an article that featured a 58 foot narrow boat that had an hybrid engine/generator and a very expensive bank of batteries. The hull was aluminium to reduce the overhaul weight. The concept was very good and being brand new should have given trouble free boating for around 8 to 10 years, this was the estimated life of the bank of batteries. A friend of mine is onto his second Lexus with an hybrid system, he traded in the first one before the batteries were up for renewal because of the cost of replacements. Regards Alan
