  1. Now that really IS tragic, but worry not. I'm here and volunteer to drink your share however much of a hardship it is. What are friends for eh?
  2. So, it is now an offence to fly the Union Jack (and yes, that is now recognised as an acceptable name for our flag) but not now an offence to fly the Jolly Roger. What about Union Jack bunting? Is flying that an offence? Is there a difference between flying a flag on a boat and a boat wearing one? Wearing medals that have not been earned is different. How do I "earn" the right to fly the Union Jack? How do I earn the right to fly the flag of St. George? I'm with Robin on this. Time to chill.
  3. Sorry everybody but this just HAD to be done... . . . . TRICK or TREAT.
  4. Several different things have come to light on this thread, some of which I think warrant further comment. Firstly on topic... Yes "trick or treat" is an Americanism, but that doesn't necessarily make it a bad thing. Lots of wonderful things have come from the colonies, and I'm sure I'll think of one soon. To "mark out" your house as being one ready and welcoming to trick-or-treaters is important. and it should be an opt-in thing rather than having to do anything to opt-out. There need to be guidelines as to what is acceptable as a "Trick" Letting off fireworks is certainly NOT one. even egging is questionable. People willing to receive trick-or-treaters should be prepared to say "Trick" sometimes. Firstly because it will teach kids that things don't always go their way and second it might encourage kids to be imaginative as to how they can fulfill their 'threat'. Personally, I would be one who would NOT want trick-or-treaters visiting, but that's just me. When they used to come I would just smile and say "no thank you" and gently close the door. sometimes getting it egged, sometimes not. I like the idea of the sign in the door, that should give added protection if necessary. Finally Tasering children and having their parents shot. Oh come off it ladies and gentlemen, we all know that this is just a figure of speech and should only be taken as a stronger level of disapproval than just "me no like"! If we were to take it any more literally than that we'd all have been shot years ago, well me certainly!! having said that... actually................ tasering children does sound rather fun :0
  5. WelI don't know ! On the one hand we've got kids demanding money with menaces, whilst on the other we've got adults enticing them with sweeties. Seriously though, I think Griff has the right idea. If you welcome halloween then hang something appropriate on your front door, and parents should go with the kids and keep them to doors that have been dressed.
  6. Option 5. A canal that runs from the side of the pilots office, under the road and back onto the main river just where the willow tree is. Put in a two way lock (like the one at Oulton broad) to stop any significant change in tidal effect and salt incursion. Phoenix pilots to operate locks so's to not take any financial hit. Simples, and only one bridge to build.
  7. I don't think the hire yards would have to try very hard to show that they were the ones supplying craft to those not rich enough to own their own boats, that the private craft can cost as much as a quarter of a million pounds and that if it weren't for them, the broads would become just another 'fat cat's playground' . How do you think the majority of this countries population would support boat owners paying less than the full amount due to that 'peoples organisation' the BA.? That is not how WE see the situation, but that is how the BA would present it if it were to go to court.
  8. Last week I was at Hickling staying on my boat. I caught a good head of Adnam's bitter with a few small Gin & Tonics. The somewhat rare Southern comfort made a quick appearance along with a surprise Pernod or two. Crisps can be a nuisance this time of the year but if you can get through them there are scratchings feeding below them. I had a good and productive time overall and next trip I might even take a fishing rod.
  9. Thinks... do I like being the "result of a wobble" ?... un-thinks!
  10. Excellent picture Griff, Everybody should have a target in life.
  11. Ahh yes, that would explain why the service could have been a little slower than usual, The 50% drop in waiter staff would hit them hard cos as we all know... . . . Time and tide wait for no man.
  12. Yeah, they're poles apart from their mates.
  13. Trouble is that whenever I go across Hickling, there's not a pub to be found! I have to carry on going until I reach PH or West Summerton. (ok, or even Horsey Mere)
  14. Looking at the third pic there Grendel, I'm a little curious... nay alarmed, as to what the BA's crew are doing on the shelf in the background. Please remind them that this is a family forum, and that some behaviour is not really acceptable.
  15. Cheque's in the post even as we speak Ray.
  16. Only ever went to Nigeria once, just to visit a cousin of mine. He's a prince you know, though for all that he does have this rather strange problem regarding his fortune and the Nigerian government.
  17. We all poke a bit of fun at each other for most of the time. That's the nature of forums, but far more importantly that's the nature of friendship. Goodness knows what the "rag & stick" fraternity would feel like if they took such comments as a personal slight. However, what we say and what we feel are very often different. I remember coming in to moor at Ranworth staithe on one occasion where I could see a spot near the far end of the 'bay' bit. I was in my 25' sea master St. Christopher. I gently pootled into the bay, turned stern on to the space and came in on tickover with very gentle squirts of power toi correct the steering. Tying up the moorings, the people on the boat next to me said "Nice to see it done properly." What really made the praise so valuable to me and made my head swell was that they were sailies! true praise indeed.!!! So! I own a Tupperware boat, (but luckily not a bathtub!) and am happy to hear it called such, as long as the person speaking means no offense. I take 'no offense' as the default value of anything anyone ever says to me. People really have to try hard to offend me. I take 'no offence meant' as the norm. If that cannot fit, it moves to "let it go, He's just having a bad day" and from there to "I'm sure he didn't really mean that". Only if I can't find any way that what has been said was meant, and was meant to be spiteful, do I take it as offensive to me. I find life is a lot more pleasant that way. so my advice will always be to make like a hippy, let it all hang loose man and chill!
  18. Mind it doesn't clash with the summer meet! (mind you, I can't remember when that is... or where!!)
  19. It was a doughnut on the end of the propshaft... I didn't even know my car had a propeller !
  20. My ginger beer used to lead to something else exploding, but I won't go into that!
  21. No Ray it seems my car needs to go on a diet. Somewhere underneath it had a doughnut only the car has eaten it!!! New doughnut bought and fitted. car now purring along like a cat. My mighty bio is not responsible for this one
