A Winters Tale

Reaching Bramerton Common (for those wondering it took a shade over 5 hours) I took the fantastic idea of heading to the waters edge pub and mooring up there instead. After securing the boat everyone unloaded themselves from the boat and 'the boy' decided it was time to slip and fall on the slippery decking despite being warned seconds before.

After we had all had a good laugh at him we headed to the pub and promptly returned to the boat as the OH felt the sign regarding dogs not being allowed inside was a tad unfriendly.

So we turned around and headed back the way we had come, having put the idea of a pint in my head however, the common wasn't sufficient anymore so back to the Ferry it was

And very festive it was too (more so than the picture shows infact)

A few pints sunk we had decided seeing as we had come this far back towards Brundall we may as well head back to our mooring, sort out some packing then head to the Yare for a few more.

We had been enjoying the Ferry so much we hadn't noticed it had turned so dark, so nav lights came on and off we set

And so after a few more pints our winter holiday is drawing to a close. It will be the end of March before we come again unless we get a lucky spot in between, but it's been a fantastic week for us once again and can't wait to come back.

Boo sucks to the Waters Edge. Must be one of the few Broads pubs that doesn't allow dogs. They lost your custom anyway. The beer in there is not up to much from memory, much better in Surlingham Ferry, top pub IMHO

Thank you Lulu I am glad you enjoyed it. It was pleasant company for me especially at the start of the week whilst i was alone.

Really enjoyed this Jay, the great commentary and pictures made us feel like we were traveling along with you.

Shame about the Waters Edge, I must admit I never find it the friendliest of Broadland Pubs, especially if your not eating there and as Howard says the beer is not the best

Roll on March ehh? ....... well it’ll only be a few weeks until we get back then.

I enjoyed your tale, Jay, thanks for posting. I haven't yet been tempted to go boating in the winter but having always enjoyed Howard's tales and now yours I may yet change my mind. Based on your observations the river seemed almost deserted which surprises me.

Does the Waters Edge really consider itself to be a pub? The old Woods End definitely was but I think the Waters Edge considers itself more of a restaurant. Having dogs myself, I too was disappointed that dogs are not allowed inside, ok in the nice weather as you can sit outside but not this time of year. When I have looked inside it gives me more of a restaurant feel than a pub so I can understand the dog ban.

Having just looked at their website, they say they are a ‘Restaurant and Bar’ so I guess they are looking to be a bit more upmarket than a pub.

I think that sums up the place perfectly, was a pub, now gone gastro, humble boaters/walkers/dog owners  need not apply! 

And Simon, do go for it if you can, it really is the best (IMHO of course)

I will Howard. Almost certainly not next year given I have 3 hires already booked but I can see myself doing it. It feels a long old winter at the moment from whenever my last hire of the year is until the first one of the next.

Well lucky little me, I have managed to bag another trip to Norfolk next week. 

As always I shall be sharing whatever I get up to to anyone interested, I am not aware of anyone else turning up on the broads next week, but you never know someone may steal my thunder in their gin palace, who knows 

Anyway as it stands it will be Monday-Thursday all on my own again but I am working on my superiors (not in that way) to allow me some more leave. And rather than start a new thread I have revived this one. 

Early for some reason.

So if anyone is going to be around next week, I may see you around.

As I mentioned earlier I had gained a free week this week  (Monday to Thursday anyway) but fortunately for me after much searching and begging, I had managed an extra day away from work so could stay until Friday.

Monday morning saw me setting of for Norfolk not exactly at my best after an eventful weekend but looking forward to some time on the water.

Setting off at around 8:30 it was pleasant to find the roads were clear of any traffic and roadworks seemed to have ceased to be underway along my route to Brundall.

Sorry let me rephrase that in a more accurate way, it was a blooming nightmare with traffic and roadworks all along my route to Brundall, but persevering managed to find my way to Brooms eventually.

After the usual unloading of the car and talking to some woman I have never met before who wanted a chat about swans whilst my arms were loaded, I dumped everything in proper man like fashion in the middle of the room, opened the first beer I could find and set about checking the boat ready for the off.

This unpacking malarkey is women's work surely (Jayfire - NBN equality champion) and one wasn't to hand. The previously mentioned chatty woman looking at me in a 'don't even think about it pal' tone, so I just left it incase I bumped into one later (spoiler alert- I didn't, it's all still in the middle of the room, but don't worry boys, I've rescued the beers.

Boat looking mighty fine the ropes were removed and off I set heading down the Yare in the direction of Yarmouth.

Fortunately the sun had made an appearance and if you forgot about the lack of feeling in your face and the numbness of your fingers (Yes I know I'm an idiot for standing with my head out of the open helms roof) it could be summer (maybe).

As always excuse the pictures, I am on my own with just my phone, so they may well be a bit samey but help break up my rambling...

continuing towards Cantley 

passing through Reedham I had seen no boats either moored or travelling. Once under the bridge I turned towards the Berney Arms

and then a right hand turn to moor up Burgh Castle.

after walking the pooch, it was time for a few more beers, a quick chat to the loved ones and time to watch the evening sky

and now I'm off to bed.
