  1. Food for thought Andrew, do always have a back up plan so if you can’t get moored near an eaterie you can rustle up something hearty on a wild mooring if need be. I like Grendels steak suggestion as I once left a chicken in the oven to find it as good as alive after a couple of hours down the pub, ended up calving and pan cooking. Welsh rarebit and a chefs blowtorch may be worth keeping in store. I would aim to use all the gas and not worry about running out, I don’t think they dip the bottle or weigh it lol. So, if you don’t charge for your time then it’s only the cost of the ingredients. Now, the clue is hopefully in the name, but you can cook roight? Have a nice time on holiday!
  2. When I came home over Reedham Ferry on Wednesday I noticed there was a Maggot machine by the entrance to the campsite, not sure if it’s being stocked or not, was a time when they were all over the place, converted coke machines I think. Bag it with Maggit....
  3. I’m a hopeless shot but I do enjoy the Clay course at the Norfolk shooting school at Attlebridge once in a while, I do like the idea of mixing conservation with water though....
  4. Childhood memories in the 70s are of seeing them flying the dykes alongside the tracks through Hickling nature reserve down to Whiteslea. More recently, as Chris says, the Ant above Wayford, East Ruston, Honing Staithe, Ebridge to Spa Common and beyond. Probably at Antingham ponds, if you have a couple of million to spare you can buy it and see for yourself! Otherwise park up at Ebridge and take in the sights.
  5. Nice location, a growing village which has decent amenities and mostly not at risk of flooding. Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly this time, sooner you’re out of the big smoke the better I expect!
  6. I’ve got my my piece of paper, well... handwritten card, on the face of it very easy to replicate & dog ear to authenticate, but I know inside I’ve done what I need to do. If businesses elect to over step the mark and demand more then I will happily step back and drink and dine elsewhere. I’ll continue to take personal responsibility but treating customers like kids trying to access a nightclub is a real put off for me, not sure I’d want to be in there. I respect authority where it is due but I won’t be disrespected by those with no authority. My grandmother used to say it was no good keeping sheep on the lowlands of Norfolk, their feet will rot. They’d be ok if you take the higher ground though!

    Weather

Been from North Walsham to Beccles and back, via Wroxham/ Reedham on the outward leg and Reedham/ Potter back. Evidently been heavy rain in places but only got a bit heavy at Smallburgh on the way back. Not much at home but nice double rainbow to boot. Lovely view of the sugar beet factory when you come over the hill at Norton Subcourse with a black sky behind. Hear it was bad in Thetford last night, histatoristically one of the driest parts of the country! Reminds me of summer of 1995 albeit not quite as hot generally, 21 degrees when I set out at 4, 12 degrees when I got back at 7.
  8. Hmmm was said boat on a trailer perhaps? Although fairly sure from, say, Salhouse Bell to Brundall street I wouldn’t cross a railway.... buffling.
  9. Never mind the thing on the foredeck, is that a pair of water skis on the aft cabin roof at the Yacht Station, no wonder they raced so far after Blaydon!

    Weather

Not a drop here in North Norfolk. Been a very sticky humid day but improved as the time passed. Blazing sunshine now! Will have to pump an extra gallon from the well to do the vegetable patch...
  11. I would avoid Sputnik version 5 Andrew!
  12. Adding to speedtriple’s reply if you stay in Potter another night then walk to the church and then head left down past the graveyard and right a few yards after on the 90 degree bend and follow the path into the woods, the walk along the mud bank at the back of Hickling broad via a bird hide and watch tower and ultimately spitting you back out onto the main road is worth taking a flask and sandwiches for, a decent jaunt. My favourite walk on the broads.
  13. Once fully restored it might pass North Walsham and Dilham canal locks, these were wherry passable so around 12’ wide. As rs2021 says thought air draught could be an issue!
  14. I’ve planned a barbeque for this weekend, if it gets rained off I’m going to be really cross with Andrew lol Roll on 1976! Many boats surviving still from that and other weather extreme eras...
  15. Must have been a long old job, unless it was a reflection of the willow leaves above she still looked in keeping with her surrounds when I was there Sunday morning lol Pleased you punted her on though, there’s a lot more surface area on new Nyx but green does blend with blue a bit less conspicuously I expect. Sounds like you’re having fun anyway.
  16. Do you throttle back when you're under the keystone? I've seen the dip and tuck (under) approach work for some if enough water has been pushed out of the way. I seem to remember circa 20 years ago a low spell whereby yachts with deepish keels were running aground going under, those were the days eh.
  17. From the details & pics it looks like buy a boatyard get a boat free! I thought they just hired from there, thinking 20 years back, sure you could fit out with a tarp tent in reality but I would have thought all the hulls were laid up at the mould shop at Brundall but stand to be corrected. End of an era but the John Moxham designs that came out around that time broke the moulds, the flow and line and relaxed patio areas with deck chairs on some etc. were broad breaking at the time. Clearly remember the first time I saw one cruise onto Oulton, jaw dropping moment. Not surprised other yards bought and others developed similar. Cheap freehold moorings if a few want to get together, boatyardshare!
  18. This made me chuckle, cycled over to Hickling this morning via Sutton Mill headed for the Pleasure Boat. Road to the broad closed at the Greyhound so carried on past the Chapel and the mill. Got to Staithe Road... road closed lol. Did think should I do a uturn, back to school road, causeway, stubb.... no stuff it, normal for Norfolk, carry me on buoy down Staithe rd to destination. Didn’t see any road works so assume down near the recreation ground. For owd thi horses substitute with hold you hard!
  19. Nice that most of them have got names, something for everyone with such an assortment. Some not worth the transport cost alone I expect and some a good basis for a refit. Wonder how they’ve all ended up in this boat graveyard, non payment of tolls, smuggling, BSC failures....
  20. Well, it’s been the best part of a week in the big smoke (for a carrot cruncher like moi viz Norwich) on business consequent of which I’ve exercised the opportunity to tour the city centre nice and early circa 7am on foot in four tranches to partly exercise whilst all is deserted, and mainly check out the sadly rubbish filled doorways of abandoned shops, admire the cleanliness of the public spaces, make sure the traditional shops of St Giles are still there and last but most check out riverside. If the pundits are right then the central business district will consist of eateries, charity shops and added residential from commercial building conversions. Riverside looks a bit sad. The prime unit from my perspective and what used to be Norwegian Blue is vacant; next to one of the white painted 20 year old bridges complete with green algae, probably swung twice for the scouts GB and the floating restaurant, and a route to muggers alley. Walking on, a private cruiser appears to have had the ignition trashed, wind screen part broken, vandals I guess. Once over Carrow Bridge and heading back the other side still many potential sites awaiting regeneration, some businesses still there after 30 years or more, still the build above what used to be the electrical store adjoining DragonHall. Granted it does get better then with some nice cafes. Ferry Boat PH not all gone yet! Im baffled and perplexed that NCC were so fixated on the river bordering Broadland DC in Thorpe given the seeming abandonment of parts of the Wensum and the associated infrastructure and curtilage. But I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt, some huge opportunities to improve, just hope it doesn’t go down the path of some of the recent highway works, I’ve certainly seen some regression since I last visited some 15 months ago. This could be the last opportunity for NCC to create a destination that is more than a sea of apartment blocks, hope they grasp it.
  21. Reminds me of the image of the Moonraker on the rock in the Channel Islands, seem to think it was Zurich/N&G advert circa 1990. I’ve used the image in cryptic emails in the line of work many a time if I feel I’ve been left high and dry!
  22. Ian, forget the cemetery, you haven’t got time to be laying about there, explain to them that you’re on the move, the lure of the rural air should cure any concerns they have, seriously though hope they boot you out pronto and that all goes to plan. If you do have to stick around there then I hope the meals are palletable if indeed not already being brought up to your standard! Get well soon but most importantly get out of there, you’re a celebrity chef!
  23. Don’t paint the boat green... but if it’s green already that’s fine, to repaint green, apparently. Good luck with your new Birchwood!
  24. I have just been reflecting on these latest comments.... if Herbert Woods had an all varnished boat in their fleet finished to Robins standard then I think Reflection of Light would be a fitting name.
  25. Another one to consider is the Birchwood 25. Waterside had one recently, now sold, but at 8995 could have fitted your bill. Worth looking at one to see if it may suit. You’ll probably spot a few on your tour of the marinas around Cambs. Enjoy the voyage!
