Poppy
Skipper, Mate and Bosun are the titles used in my club, one of the oldest on the Broads. They have used these titles since its foundation before the war. The aim was to avoid the alienation of ordinary people who they hoped would join . I too dislike all this 'Commodore' business, especially when, in order to fulfil your duties on a Sunday by officiating the racing it is requisite that a blazer, cap white shirt and tie are worn .

I do hesitate at the use of the term 'admiral though, other than as a bit of fun/micky taking. I answer to variations on: "Oi you!" "Now then ugly!" "You with the hair on! "Who's the *** in charge?"

It does seem to me that the Society is slowly becoming more outspoken and the Chairman’s statement in Harnser is well worth a read these days - imho of course. Sam
Thanks to this thread, I have now discovered the ‘Green Book’. Very useful and I particularly like the tide tables. Shame they are more geared up to the sailing fraternity or I might have joined. Don’t particularly want a pennant with a sail on it.Sent from the Norfolk Broads Network mobile app

JennyMorgan
And so back to the question of safety, or lack of. https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/tributes-to-gentle-giant-who-died-in-norwich-river-drowning-tragedy-1-6710327
grendel
To be fair JM, from reading that report it would seem to me that no amount of safety measures would have prevented this tragedy. and the emergency services attended were sufficient.
Vaughan
The impression I get from that article is that the man who died was not, himself, a boat owner?
