Boat Survey

Right folks, another hurdle has been put in my way by Navigators & General. I have to get an "Out of the water boat survey.

Can anybody recommend a surveyor that Nav&Gen accept?

They should accept any surveyor that's qualified, may be worth asking how often they want it done, GJW direct only want it done every 7 years, most want more often.

Ask them if they will accept a 'yard survey', always did when we insured our old woody. Lot easier, & cheaper, than using an actual surveyor. Richardson's my be able to help or at least advise, assuming that your boat is still there.

Mine accepted a survey by a boat builder of experiance, downside is that they want it done every four years not seven, something to do with age of boat.

Try Alan Boswell for the insurance, same policy as N&G cheaper and dont think they require a survey.

Tried Alan Boswell, in my case it was slightly cheaper to go direct with the insurer not the broker. Most if not all insurers I contacted wanted a survey/ report.

Yes, its who I insure with, and no survey required... hope that helps.

i'm with them also and if i buy a new boat they now need a survey, although never needed one for chameleon

Boswell are brokers not insurers. No survey? Guess your boat is newer than mine, everybody wanted a survey report on mine. (1980 boat)

Current boat 1994, previous boat 1976, never had an insurance survey!!

I'm with Alan Boswell for my '78 Safari and all I had to do was fill out a self survey questionaire. I first insured this boat with them in May '19 so perhaps things have changed.

I used these for my last survey, and they just updated it when i had the engine replaced with other work.

N & G are also brokers and both have same policy with Zurich.

I have yet to find any insurer that doesn't require a survey for a boat over 23' and over 30 years old, I have looked high and low, none would accept a yard report.

I know of one surveyor I wouldn't use unless I could wait 8 weeks for the report. ( not previously mentioned )

I had someone from European Marine Surveys do my last one.  It was over 10 years ago but I wasn't very happy with some of the stipulations the surveyor made, which might have been appropriate in other circumstances, such as installation of a very expensive automatic fire extinguisher in the engine compartment of a diesel-engined boat. Unfortunately the insurance company seized on this and, whilst I was able to negotiate with them on other points, they wouldn't do so on this one. Most of the points that the surveyor made, I would put in the "bleeding obvious" category and anything he couldn't see without lifting a carpet or floor boards was caveated to the point of pointlessness.

We use Craftinsure, didn't require a survey, our boat is only 23' though.

Our old girl was over a 100 years old and boatyard surveys were all acceptable. Once from WRC and once from South Rivers Marine at St Olaves.
