Smoking in pubs

Hi Martin, no criticism intended, I think the discussion is an important and interesting one. I just wondered if a mod could split the thread and perhaps create a new one about smoking in pubs which I'm sure would continue as an interesting and constructive debate. I just thought perhaps in time to come if someone searched on the Ferry, Stokesby they might get a lot of information which, although highly relevant to the general pub debate, is not actually related to the pub in question!

Hope that makes sense.

Incidentally I smoked for many years, have now given up but have no objection to others doing so. Mrs Nog has just started up again but that's another story.........

Back to topic, smoking has been banned in pubs, giving those of us who dislike having their cloths or hair stink like stale ashtrays the freedom to enjoy their evening out, great. Our government has two choices, please those who do at the expense of those who don't or please those that don't at the expense of those who do. 

Smoking killed both my brother and my mother. I hope that the ban remains in place, for all our sake's.

As a reformed ex-smoker I can see both sides of the argument. On the one hand I never liked coming back from the pub with my hair and clothing smelling of smoke. On the other hand, I respect the smoker's right to indulge in slow-motion suicide whilst enjoying a drink. The best pubs are those which provide warm and sheltered accommodation where smokers can get their "fix" in all weathers. Sadly, there are not many places with such provision.

On the broader subject of whether the smoking ban has killed off the pub, I think the bigger concern is the huge increase in the price of beer in recent times. When I was doing my formative drinking in the late 1960's, a pint of mild could be had for one and ninepence whilst best bitter would be 2 shillings (10p for you youngsters ) - easily affordable for a lad with a paper round and a Saturday job. Nowadays, with a pint approaching £3.50, I think twice, even though I am on a decent salary.   This has to have an effect on the sustainability of the pub as we know it.

If my wife and I go out it's seven pounds or more for us as a couple to drink just one round. A half decent bottle of wine costs less than that!

I don't think it was necessary to ban smoking from pubs , we just had to revert to a saner  moment in time.........just a quick walk past any older pub will confirm this...

The answer is and was quite simple .

There was a bar you knew it was a bar because it said so on the etched glass window.

There was a lounge you knew it was a lounge because it said so on the etched glass window.

Can you see where I am going with this......?

Yes you guessed it....

There was a smoke room you knew it was a smoke room because it said so on the etched glass window.

I well remember those days from my callow youth. Perhaps the staff would rather not have to breath in someone else's stale, exhaled smoke.

I should point out that I do agree with the smoking ban in enclosed spaces, that only enforces peoples right to breath clean air, freedom for the majority is the right thing to do. My concern is talk of a more general ban, smoking is not the main contaminant of open spaces and  therefor banning it would be aimed at curtailing people's freedom without any noticeable benefit.

The decline of Pubs is due to a number of reasons, and the smoking ban is only a fairly recent addition.

They have simply had their day as the centre of social gathering and interaction.

The first nail in the coffin was TV, then the much cheaper cost of booze and spirits off-premises, then the breathalyser, then the Pubcos, and now the smoking ban.

I've been a non-smoker all my life, quite fortunate really, because I imagine I would have had difficulty summoning the willpower to give it up.

...(and I was born in an era when smoking was encouraged as a really "cool" and sophisticated thing to do).....

The world is a much nicer place with the ban.

Hire cars, hotel bedrooms, hire boats, railway waiting rooms etc absolutley stank. They dont now.

I was a 10 Villiger cigar a day man plus a few cigs when I ran out. Been clean for twenty years.

No Bobdog, This is a discussioin forum for like minded people who like the broads. The discussions need not necessarily be confined to the broads, although in this case there is a link.

What two things do the following pubs have in common? ...

The Stracey Armes, The Complete Angler, The Station Inn (Coltishall), The Kingfisher (Stalham) and The Broadshaven? To name but five.

Answer they are Broads pubs ande they are closed. This debate covers one of the possible causes for the general demise.

My point all along is not whether one should be allowed to smoke whilst in a pub, my argument is who should make that decision, the landlord or the government. I believe it should be the landlords choice. It is the landlords choice as to whether he allows all male parties, children or dogs, It is the landlords decision at to whether he does food or not, and it's his choice as to whether or not he does kareoke. What goes on in his pub should be his decision.

Chris, I too will have been "clean" for twenty years next year, I made a choice!!!

Good point , but, as the thread began in a "pub" thread, it has stayed there. 

I was a heavy smoker when younger, but stopped in March 1993. I cannot speak for all, but anything that is hopefully improving the quality of air we breath,then I am all for it!

My mates two girls make him stand outside their homes, when he has a puff on his pipe. Its all about choice IMHO. Many Wetherspoon pubs have a outside smoking area.

Cant see how  the landlord can make that kind of decision. health and safety in the work place my friends. I hate this blame and claim culture myself. Could you  imagine the claim, " yeah landlord said it was ok for punters to smoke " in fact when I complained ,as I was a non smoker I was fired .

Also I generally think the younger generation don't socialise like we use to. So eventually pubs will be gone when our generation have fell of the perch

I am pleased that you can't smoke in public places such as pubs and restaurants when they told me in hospital that I had emphysema,this is not doubt as a result of me smoking for many years.There was a lady next to me in hospital,i would say she was about seventy,she to had emphysema,she never smoked,but her and her husband would go dancing in clubs when they were younger.of course then smoking was wide spread in public places.I don't go about smoking to those who do ,I did after all enjoy smoking.The air is much better now in public places.

I worked in the NHS for 38 years ( no, not a Porter that's what people always ask ). I was led to understand that the tax income derived from smoking was something like 10 times what's actually spent on treating smoking related diseases, and another thing, why are E cigarettes banned from most pubs ? its only water vapour.
