JennyMorgan
Apparently the Spirit of Breydon is up for sale, offers in the region of 80K! A very expensive mistake or, as some might suggest, vanity project.
Smoggy
I always wondered what the point of it was and what it could do that the other launches can't.

A very expensive mistake or, as some might suggest, vanity project. At the January 17 NavCom meeting, a report on the Launch Replacement Programme was submitted. SoB is shown as due for replacement during the period 2041 - 2046. The condition report says, "Hull and structure in good condition. Replacement parts required for the engine are on a long delivery time which has compromised operational availability." Perhaps the difficulty in getting replacement parts has proved too much and a decision has been made to bite the bullet and sell the vessel now, rather than to limp on with increased absences from duty. The boat was supplied by a very reputable company, so I find this latest problem rather surprising. I'm not sure that any blame can be laid at the BA's door. I'm not sure, without knowing exactly what the supply problem is, that I would want to do any finger-pointing at all. Where is it being advertised for sale?

I don't actually know the reason for the decision. I haven't even seen any confirmation that the vessel is up for sale. But, if it is for sale and it has proved difficult to get engine spares, 2 + 2 might just equal 4 on this occasion, or I might be wide of the mark. If you bought a car in good faith, and it turned out that spares took a long time to arrive, resulting in much off-the-road time, what would you do? Get rid of it as soon as you could, and get something you could use, or keep it and put up with it being stuck in the garage? How many times have we seen critical posts on here and elsewhere about the absence of SoB from its patrol area. Bear in mind, as well, that the BA didn't just jump in with both feet. Several different options were considered and independent advice was sought, before SoB was purchased. I don't like my toll money being wasted, anymore than anyone else, but I would rather SoB be sold and the experience gained be used to purchase another vessel, more suited to the task than some have regarded SoB, so that better value can be had over the next 20-odd years.

Paul
I agree with much of your argument Paladin. If SOB is not performing the task it is required to do then off loading is the best option. Sadly we live in an age of bottom lines and the bottom line here is that a good many individuals stated when the decision to purchase her was announced, "what a waste of money". Now here we are what, six years? down the line and they are being proven right, if indeed the boat is for sale which as yet has not been substantiated, though I doubt the BA would want it pride of place on the riverside at some local brokerage. Far more likely a cut price deal will be done with some other authority to move her to the Thames or such like, and she'll slide quietly out of the back door. ExSurveyor
I wonder if the Rangers and Head Ranger were allowed any input into the original purchase decision or it was just independent experts who decided. It worked out well, not. Guess it might be time to ask those who will use any replacement what they think..
Islander
How about one of these. Its a hover craft that flies. Great for over mud or water. Can hold 4 people. If they are going to waste my money then this would be fun to watch. Colin 2

JennyMorgan
I have heard that that she's for sale from two reliable sources, one of whom is in the trade & both people are trustworthy, not to say that they mightn't be wrong. I too have searched for an advert and can not find it but I suspect that she'll be advertised in rather more specialised publications than I have access to. Recent photographs of her show that Broads Authority branding has all been removed from her. She was bought from an impeccable source & I suspect that the whole saga is an embarrassment to them. In the meantime her engine problems are in the public arena. Whilst a Ranger told me before Christmas that the Authority was waiting for spares, more than six months ago, I find it surprising that spares are not readily available for what is a relatively modern engine. The delay can hardly be good for the manufacturer's reputation. Perhaps she's for sale but not being advertised until she's problem free. Wonder what it would cost to re-engine her?
