Well Alan I agree with everyone who has entered onto your topic regarding Sabre 28. You and Dave must be so proud of your selves. The photos are great. You both have had some mad ideas regarding rebuilding boats that no one wants. But will this be the last or just another one in line?

I think when you get her up on to the broads you should have a open day so everyone can see her in her glory  :clap .

Lol Iain.. I forget you have to use a boat after rebuilding it..!

Thank you Mother (She really is my mum.. it's not a secondary account..!) it's hard work aint it! I prefer to look at it as not a boat no one wanted but a boat every gave up on (Our last boat had 7 people try and fail!).. thats ones only had 3.. this will be the last one for a bit although we will probably wanna change houseboats in a couple of years.

There will certainly be guided tours when shes done although I suspect everyone will be sick of hearing about it! (If there's anyone left reading this by the time we finish!!)

Midweek - Sneak peak!

We spent a couple hours putting up the bathroom covering.. It's a really strange product.. It appears to be a textured vinyl but looks nice (I can't get a picture of it as the camera can't focus). It's apparently the correct product for wet rooms (its a tanking material)..

It has to be contact adhesive applied (with a roller!) so after some head scratching we worked out the process.. (i.e Bit by bit and carefully!).. it's hard work I was hoping to get a few walls done today but we got the biggest bit done though and we were both getting a bit tipsy on the glue fumes so it will have to be a slow process :( (Its strong glue) Hopefully though we will get it all done during the week though...

I've ordered some oak faced ply sheets for the bulkheads which we will collect saturday.. (More to come the weekend).. Shes coming together!!  two guns

Pic attached :)

Hi Alan,

Ok this is bit long winded and I don't want to (and don't mean to) actively market companies as I'm not sure the forums policy..

However as you ask :) all products are supplied by a specialist company (Hawke house). The adhesives we are using are specially selected by them to do the job required and they are very good products!

The contact adhesive is applied with a thick pile mini roller. (Best tip ever is to not do the very edges as you can pull to fit after!)

For the foam backed side/headlining:

Roller the contact adhesive  (SAF111) to the material you are gluing to (So walls or plywood for the headlining). You have about 10 mins "play time"...

then use a spray contact adhesive (trade tack) on the back of the foam.. Apply and hope for the best as its sticks and can't be peeled off!

For the Bathroom material (we are using Mural Mouse B303) apply the SAF111 to both sides.. again apply within 10 mins and hope for the best... (I must admit this bathroom stuff is harder to install that the foam as bubbles are easier to spot but imposible to shift!).

Hawke house have produced a fixing guide which is worth a read if you do want to do this yourself (http://www.hawkehouse.co.uk/headlining-fitting-guide). To be honest we have been following pretty much as per this, except we haven't chalked out as they say and sometimes we do go right to the edges..

(So far I have found Hawke house to be very helpful and a fair price, they are a small company, so I do highly recommend them (p.s Thegluepeople wont sell SAF111 as its a bespoke product to Hawke house only (I tried that one!))...

Hope this helps..

Hi Alan,

Thank you for that I am sure that the information you have given may be of use to Doug who as your know is doing a very large restoration project.

My thoughts on naming products are that we are not the BBC or Blue Peter so we do not have to say "sticky back plastic" :naughty:

Regards

Alan

Great work, she is looking fine! I totally agree Hawke House is my 'go to ' company for boat coverings/fabrics/ adhesives. They are so helpful and great quality. The recent work replacing Brilliant's lifting roof sides was done using their acrylic canvas.

Glad to help Doug. I only found them a few months back.. I used toomer and hayter before (similar company) but always found their customer service to be a bit abrupt and I don't like that when I'm spending the amounts of money we spend!

Hawke house do everything including canopy material and cushions... (they quoted £650 for our double, single and dinette.. including foam which sounds fair..)... worth studing thier website for a bit...  (P.S I found sidelining carpet cheaper here though - http://www.martrim.co.uk/catalogue/ribbed-lining-carpet.html)..

cheers

Hello Alan,

Now I believe you a tad tight with money, you only talk to your parents through the forum! thus saving phone costs.

We used to moor next to them at Eastwood's (M&I the clue is in the log in).

Really enjoying the thread.

For an cooker look at caravan forums (magnum motor homes, rainbow conversions etc).

Marina we are going to the dark side (north) the same time may see you.

Lol Alan.. My Dads side are from scotland, close enough ;)

Quick update (sorry all.. I know this is probably a bit dull) but I want to publish these pictures as the next lot will probably show this finished..

I wasn't quite sure how to butt the joins up and learnt the hard way (I saved it).. basically don't glue the an inch up to the edge... (lesson learnt.. it still looks ok.. one place its a mm out :( lol)  I'm stressing a bit how to cut the very last edge but it will ok... we need to silicon the edges anyway...

So instead of waking up in sunny norfolk, we woke up at 8 to get down to toolstation to collect parts... Annoyingly toolstation didnt have the shower we went for so it was a bit of a wasted trip. It's on order for wednesday.. Next stop the chandlery.. I brought the depth gauge instrument thing.. so that can go in at some point. Final stop with the timber merchants (It's a very olde worlde place.. right out a dickens film (I'll get some pics of it one day!).. we collected the first 3 oak face ply boards and had a look around the oak "off cut" shed.. (£5 for any peice under 2.5 metres.. so we brought £30 worth! (I'm like a kid in a sweet shop).

Back to the boat for 11am (whoops).. Now annoyingly these boards are a 10th of the price for a reason.. they are unfinished... so we had to quickly but carefully cut to size (These are being used for the final bulkhead finish).. then varnished before being installed! Thankfully we have daves mum down this week and she likes varnishing!

Just before the rain came we got most of the boards cut (the final one went inside.. just) and Dave's mum did a brilliant job at varnishing most of the cut boards 3 times!

I didn't manage to get any pictures though as we was working quickly to miss the rain!

So tomorrow.. we just finish varnishing these boards and before they are installed we will epoxy the backs (As per the timber merchants suggestion (the backing isn't wbp so it has to be done) and install a few.. (we will need probably another 5 or 6 boards to finish off but we made a good dent in it!)... I'll also take some pictures.. she looks very different already :)

Long day today.. but not much to show for it!

Dave and his mum epoxied the bulkhead walls annoyingly the epoxy (use are using some cheap stuff from East Coast Fibreglass for the first time and its slow curing :(

They also started on the half size wardrobe opposite the loo.

I finished wallpaper the loo (It's my new nickname) and trimming the excess off.. It will need a couple more days on it to get it perfect but it will get there.

Hopefully the epoxy will get set tomorrow so I can get some pictures of the walls.
