A number of old tyre fitters in the past used to fit Avon tyres if they could not manage to sort out balancing issues. A main dealer once wiped out a set of tyres on my old Mazda after altering the tracking, on seeing the inside edges of all of my tyres I had them checked out by Steve, they were 15 to 20 points out of calibration on the front wheels. I tend to have Michelin and Hankook winter tyres on spare wheels. Regards Alan

I have only been to Kwik-fit twice, it took ages and on both occasions I was temped to take the tools off of them and finish the job. I use a local tyre fitter I have know for years. Tyres are one of the most important items on a car, it is the only thing between you and death, I have been in tyre bays when reps call in for budget tyres, the cheapest possible and these guys are doing 60,000 plus miles per year and mostly on motorways! At least these days not many fit remolds or used tyres. Regards Alan

Anyone servicing there own cars may use manufactures parts to cut down on the continual servicing. I have always been a firm believer of good tyres and brakes. Any dealer however operates at the best profit they can make so using cheaper parts maybe part of the norm for them, fast wearing pads a prime example. Are their many car owners taken in by the claims of BP & premium fuel suppliers? The fuel savings claimed in their adverts would never pay for themselves for the additional price paid . Regards Alan

The moorings there are OK for stopping at lunchtime but there is too much in the way of slap on the hull for overnight mooring the waves and current just hit the boat after coming around the bend. It is a rare sight to see only one boat moored there. Regards Alan

I fully agree with you, we all tend to keep a look out on most of the marinas. Regards Alan

Cutlass bearings and their housings can be a pain, there is the cost of the lift at up £400 plus the labour at least say £60 per hour allow two men for eight hours if you are lucky and the cost of the bearing, new shaft or shaft being repaired. Any change out of £1000.00 would be a bonus, we have had to do this twice because the first attempt was not a very good job. It had to be repeated the following year in our winter service. Please see pictures of our cutlass housing and the eight foot long drive shaft showing wear that was stainless welded and machined. Regards Alan

Hi Andrew, I have no experience of rats with cars, but I used to be on standby working on loan to Batchelors Foods, there were loads of rats that would climb inside trunking and eat the insulation off of the cables, we had to make temporary repairs be taping the cables until new runs of cables could be installed. Hi Peter, Yes Bayco was the one with the steel rods that fitted into the bases. Bricks, doors and windows all slid between the rods, I liked the pre formed roofs. Regards Alan

Before I became self employed back in the day it was always a bonus if the wage packet was available before we went home on Thursday afternoons, of course back then we were paid £1.23 per hour and that was in 1976. Regards Alan

Hi Paul I fully agree with some of the reasons you list. Town Councils have a lot to answer for with town planning and in many cases not wanting cars into their towns or cities, car parking in many towns is expensive. The level of the rents for covered markets stalls are also a reason for their demise. Some cities and towns have it right, Bury and the covered market in Oxford spring to mind. Regards Alan

Hello Andy, Welcome to the forum, all the above suggestions are good it is up to you to decide if you want to moor outside a pub or just at the side of the river or on a broad, there are riverside 24 hour moorings outside Wroxham Broad, you can moor at Salhouse Broad but on the river and in the broad you will be charged for mooring. Mooring at Horning can be an issue even in September so as suggested booking a mooring at the New Inn is a good option. Regards Alan
