JamesLV Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 Well, gusts of around 35mph I think and a lot of heavy rain last night made for an interesting experience... Survived intact though, just awaiting the wind to calm down and the rain to stop before we continue on our way... Quote
SueH Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 Absolutely. Am on the pontoon at Oulton at the moment. Bobbing round like a 'cork', En-route to Beccles later, hopefully a bit more sheltered there. A very unsettled Rosie, she likes being on board but that was a bit extreme! Sue Quote
JamesLV Posted October 5, 2017 Author Posted October 5, 2017 We were on Thurne Dyke, so probably a bit more comfortable than Oulton, glad I moved the boat slightly to tie up on the rings though as one of our Rhonda anchors had come out this morning! Our dog was pretty good, he doesn't like strong wind but only came up to join us around 6am ish... Quote
vanessan Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 On the pontoon at DTG Oulton Dyke at present, certainly an interesting night. More to come over the next few days I believe. Quote
JamesLV Posted October 5, 2017 Author Posted October 5, 2017 Luckily we'd covered quite a bit of ground early on, as today was supposed to be adventure day, not sure if it will be now, currently lashing it down again in Thurne Quote
thingamybob Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 If you can put out a couple of "spring" lines, these for the uninitiated are ropes that go the other way from the deck cleats or other points. Google the term and you will see what I mean. make sure you have plenty of fenders down on the bank side. what is more, a few drops of what you fancy does help. Have a good break. Thingy. Quote
Moosey Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 We were at Cantley last night and it was a rough one! Back on the north side and hopefully it will be a much calmer one tonight! Quote
Chelsea14Ian Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 The other week we were at Oulton Nd Beccles it was blowing a good un,50-60 mph. That was interesting. 2 Quote

JennyMorgan Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 Best moor up to the shore from where the wind is blowing rather than the shore to where the wind is blowing on to. Oulton Broad's Dutch Tea Gardens is a prime example as the prevailing wind comes from the West. Best go to the shore opposite, the timber quay heading in the corner, you'll need your rhond hooks though. 1 Quote
Baitrunner Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 Moosey what was the water height like at Cantley? springs today I think. tide up at brundall was a tad high Tuesday and was thinking of staying at Cantley Saturday. Quote
Maxwellian Posted October 6, 2017 Posted October 6, 2017 When it is blowing hard my favourite place to avoid is Ludham bridge especially on a handover day. I did it a couple of years ago and it is fun trying to hold station while waiting for the endless line of boats coming down. Exciting though. Quote
Polly Posted October 7, 2017 Posted October 7, 2017 It has been sunny and millpond smooth at St Mawes but I think the rain comes in today. Quote

JamesLV Posted October 20, 2017 Author Posted October 20, 2017 That’s what I did with my rhond anchors, but one got pulled out over night, I’m going to assume I didn’t have it in at enough of an angle, or the ground got so waterlogged over night it just pulled out. one of our neighbours we’re only on with two lines on anchors and one pulled leaving them halfway out across the Dyke circa 2am, oh how we all laughed when we discussed it the next morning! grendel Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 I remember doing one re-enactment event, and it was so windy, with the tent flapping I ended up wearing my motorbike crash helmet to keep the noise down, in the morning when I got up the trailer tent next to me had moved 20 foot down the hill in the night. 1 Quote
