It's Leg-Over time again!

Recommended Posts

Bet that made you look eh? :norty:

Actually what I meant was I'm off down to the Wisbeach area on the mighty TIGER1050 to see friends, stay over then back home tomorrow.

Not been out on a proper ride out this year at all as of yet, proper looking forward to this, only 100 mile each way - unless I get lost - which is no bad thing when astride the Tiger.   Cracking wx for it too

Back home safe and sound. Awesome ride-out. Used the TomTom Rider for the first time too - Great performance.

The Tiger was proper howling, how we have missed each other.  Best Leg-over this year :naughty:

Btw - some of you may not know this - Speed limits and solid white lines are only advisory for British bikes with an engine capacity over 1 x Ltr

Quite a few 'hairdryers' at the Lincoln showground this weekend Griff. :naughty:  I seriously interferred with the leather-clads street cred when a procession of them decided to enter the roundabout at the top of Tillbridge Lane when it was my right of way. A cheery 'beep beep' and a wave from behind the wheel of the 'coo coo' (its a Norfolk Qashqai) soon had beards wagging as the procession ground to a halt and they were overtaken by the peloton of the Lions charity pushbike race. Lycra intermingled with leather as they gave way to us and made the procession more colourful in a San Francisco sort of way. :hardhat:

It was interesting to note that as I travelled down Tillbridge Lane (straight Roman Road) at 50 mph that the peloton was catching me up before I turned off for Sturton by Stow. I was quite familiar with riding the old 'treader' or 'push-rod' as a kid but was quite surprised at the turn of speed these guys were doing. Admittedly they were not hampered by the wicker fishing basket fastened to the back panier or fishing rods tied to the cross bar that I had to contend with, but they weren't 'alf shiftin'!

Last motorbike I had was a Triumph Tiger Cub, back in 1965. After that, I moved onto four wheels and was the proud owner of a 1950 sit up and beg Ford Popular.  I started on two wheels with a Phillishave on wheels, a 50cc Norman Nippy in 1960! Then a Francis Barnett 197cc and a 197cc Dot Scrambler, before my Tiger Cub. Never did hit the big time with bikes, but would love a Harley Trike, just for the fun of one.

One bike I had would do 100mph in first gear and top out at over190 mph ( not that I tried it). It was just to fast and had to go now on the lookout for a nice 1050 tiger. Must be getting old as sports bikes just don't do it for me anymore. Cannot wait to get me leg over again.

I sold it when I came to the middle east and 2 years ago I bought a big 1854cc Yamaha (like a Harley). Too bl**dy heavy. I've done 800 miles in 2 years. It's now for sale and if I wasn't getting so old, I would by a Yamaha R1. Maybe I will.

Look, Sports bikes are for the youngsters.  They fill what is a small niche market that is getting smaller.  Sports Tourers is a vast growing market, it ticks all the boxes.

My Lad was horrified when I offered him the green light on my Tiger - 'It's an old mans bike Dad, my mates will laugh me off the road' he said or some such like.

However he had the Tiger or nowt, Now he is down the road a couple of years, his mates are switching to sports tourers, they have tried a fair few of them too but the one bike they have all ridden and covet is the Tiger 1050.

It really is that good.  track days - I've emberassed no end of 'Sports' bikes at Cadwell (Which is where my photo on this thread was taken) I went on a few track days to find the Tigers limits as a safety issue for the road - failed miserably - never did find the Tigers limits but found mine pronto.  Took it round the Neurberg ring in Germany - frightened mysen to death - won't be doing that in a hurry anytime soon.

So those bikers out there that are considering a sports tourer the Tiger 1050 - comes highly recommended.  I might even let you try mine!

I'm not sure this thread is heading in a direction my sheltered planks think it ought to.

It started in a somewhat risque fashion and has since plummeted to new depths with all this talk of leather and lycra getting intermingled..

And now? The final straw, Griff is offering to let others get their leg over his leg over :naughty:

Where will it all end?

Ah now your talking Griff!!!

I have a poorly GSXR750 - mint condition owned since new. 19yrs old this month with 18,500 miles on the clock.

Had some carb problems and cant seem to find a decent mechanic who can fix the darn thing properly so no leg overs for me for a while.

To be honest I agree with you about sports bikes, as your limbs and joints get stiffer that riding position starts to hurt - I found if you go faster it makes it easier though!! Every time I ride it though it scares the life out of me how fast they go in such a short space of time.

Father in law used to ride a Blackbird until he was about 65 - then went for the Speed triple - the mum in law used to go pillion as well. The Speed Triple didn't last long as he had a big out on it and ended his riding days, but fortunately not his living days. :hardhat:  I am waiting to claim his 1987 GSXR1100 which he has had since new and has stored for me!!!! :naughty:  :naughty:

cheers Doug. Was hoping for a mechanic a bit closer to home.

Lots around who work on the proper old bikes but then nothing unless they can plug a new bike into a machine that goes 'ping'!

I did get a recommendation last year and they werent any good either.

I did have a guy who worked in his shed was brilliant but doesn't do it anymore.

  • 1 year later...

Well not having a leg over for well over a year now I am getting stiff!

I did post back in August about a local bike show which I duly went to. Lots of very nice bikes - old and new, custom jobs, rare bikes all sorts for all tastes.

Doing our bit for charity (the show proceeds went to NARS and the First responders anyway) I bought a fivers worth of tickets for a prize draw - again proceeds to a childrens hospice so all money well spent. Thought nothing more about the draw as you never know anyone who wins these things.

Bxxxxer me I get a call on Sunday evening telling me I have one first prize.

So next month I will be collecting this little beauty (check out the link) - http://www.copdock-cmc.co.uk/PictureGallery-2016-FlatTrackerPhotoShoot.htm

Not everyone's cup of tea and to be honest I have never been into this type of bike, but as I look at the pictures it is growing on me. As it works and comes with a years free insurance I am hoping that I might get a few leg overs before the weather closes in.

It's a one off as well so I wont mistake it for a boring old Tiger:party: Still I wont have a hope in hell of keeping up with Griff on it anyway, but I shall try and look cool.

Now can I still get in those leathers:naughty:
