The boat in front is the Queen of Hearts. Photo taken by her hirers, on 26th May, 1953. And a missing Star class behind her. B723 ended up as Whispering Star but we could not work out which one she was when in Powles fleet. We know where five Star class are which is a pretty good survival rate. Vaughan, please keep those pictures coming, absolutely fascinating. 7

Vaughan
The King of Hearts, on Hickling. She would go under Potter bridge, too! No date on this one, but they must have been two boats together.

marshman
Vaughan - just something to mull over!! Some 5 years ago my brother in law died and he had a huge collection of railway and transport photos ( including many transparencies) of lines and especially branch lines pre Dr Beeching. He knew many of the specialist train book writers and he was always sending stuff off to them for publication in many of their books. How many he had I never knew but he had boxes and boxes of them - but access to the right box was only in his head! When he died, even though it was not long ago, there was only one place who offered to take them and they promised to sort them out and digitalized what was a truly historic record - as far as I am aware it was never done and I bet they now do not even know what they have got! You must do yours - its part of the Broads and cannot be lost! I keep telling Mr Waller to do the same especially as I know he has some precious glass slides including many of wherries which like my brother in laws will eventually be lost unless they are preserved. Its always one of those jobs you are always going to get round to - but never do!! The Norfolk Wherry Trust has a huge digitalized Archive available for use - why not have a look at what can be achieved 2

WherryNice
I know that King of Hearts is still about(although in a different form to that seen above) but I don't think I have ever seen any of the other Hearts boats of that era, does anyone know if any do still exist? JanetAnne
Someone was restoring Six of Hearts a couple of years ago but I don't know whether it's finished. I'd love to think there are more out there

I'd love to think there are more out there I am in touch with the new owners of the King and am looking forward to meeting them when I am next in Norfolk, to see how they are getting on with her. They are also the owners of Heartbeat but they say they are not sure if she can be economically restored. Perhaps we shall see! The Six is indeed going strong and has been moored near Southend on the Thames estuary, where she was still chugging around on her old Coventry Victor Vixen engine. I heard that the Queen got broken up a few years ago. I have also been in touch with the owners of the two auxiliary yachts, the Three and Four of Hearts, which are both now registered in the River Cruiser Class, but Hearts did not build those. I too, would love to hear news of any others!

With the King, it was the width of the foredeck amidships that counted more than the height. She also had that step in the hull amidships, which meant the aft cabin was fairly low. To be honest, airdraft is a thing I have only recently started to consider and even the word "airdraft" is a new expression. There were hardly any gauges on the bridges in those days, so we used to use the Mark One Eyeball!
JanetAnne
No wooden boat restoration is ever economically viable even if you did all the work yourself and someone gave you the materials! Chloe Jane took me and Ali 3500 hours between us and Janet Anne is at just over 2000 with probably another 500+ to go. That equates to 40 hours a week for a year plus travelling costs and you aint bought a screw yet... If they bail out of Heartbeat give them my number... just dont tell the missus

Any chance of resurrecting it here or at least some updates. Hopefully things will have progressed in over 5 years.
