Very sad news to read of Ian's passing. RIP Ian, your family can be proud of what you have achieved during your lifetime, we never met Ian or any of his family but his posts on here were a pleasure to read. Condolences to the family.

This is dreadful news. Ian will be immensely missed by so many people other than by his family. I really began to believe he had beaten his many problems. Tony and I send our deepest sympathy to Marina and to Alan and his sister. The world will be a poorer place without him. R.I.P.Ian.

Sorry to hear this sad news. The world has lost a fighter with great spirit for sure. His pain is over and his family can be so proud of him.

Before seeing this post, I had just posted a light hearted reply on another thread.  Had I seen this first, I would not have done so, I hope I have not appeared crass, it was not intended.

RIP Ian.

My condolences to Marina, Alan and the rest of Ian's family. I only met Ian and Marina once but count them as firm friends through this forum. Ian had an indomitable spirit, fighting to the last. I loved his chef tales, and the news on how the new boat was progressing. It's a shame he won't get the joy of sailing it.

Rest in peace Ian.

Hi All,

Thanks again for these kind comments and thoughts. Dad did indeed pass away at James pagnets hospital at 9pm on 10th January, sadly his body finally gave up but he fought strongly right to end.  Thankfully he did regain the ability to talk to us for a couple of days and he did know you were all thinking of him.

We are just arranging the funeral but it will probably be held at Gorleston Cemetery, we are hoping to have some assistance from Hemsby lifeboat crew who may hopefully transport dads coffin which I think would have brought a huge smile to him to know.  EVERYONE is welcome to attend the funeral. I will provide the date as soon as we know.

Dad naturally wanted his ashes scattered at Stamford Bridge but this isn't possible. His parents are buried/scattered at the commonwealth war graves in Cardington where granddad was a radio operator with the RAF airships, so we feel that would be best resting place. Chelsea have a memorial wall and we will commission a plaque to be placed on here too.

Hi All,

Please be advised:

Ian Hathaway's (Chelsea14Ian) Funeral will be held at:

Gorleston Crematorium on 9th February 2024 at 12.15pm

All are invited and welcome, Dad's hearse will (Hopefully) be escorted by the Hemsby Lifeboat Crew (as long as not needed on call) of which he was a keen volunteer. Donations are requested to the Hemsby lifeboat, (I will revert with details on how to donate).

Those attending please feel free to wear blue in recognition of his support of Chelsea football club.

Please feel free to PM me if needed regarding the funeral.

Many thanks again for the messages and a big thanks to the Hemsby Lifeboat crew.

Hi All,

Just a bump too. Once again all are welcome to the funeral at Gorleston.

Regarding donations to Hemsby Lifeboat. Sadly they don't have a website at the moment so it's not quite straight forward to donate.  We have a few options:

  • Direct BACS, probably PM me for details, although I think the bank details are in the public realm it's probably best not to post them online really.
  • Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/pools/c/91noE7NU5H (I've set this up, Paypal charity donations are commission free so this way all monies donated are passed on).
  • Online condolence book: ianhathaway.muchloved.com  Set up by the funeral directors, there is the ability to donate on here although there is a commission taken.

Please feel free to sign the online condolence book too: ianhathaway.muchloved.com

Alan

I have left the following tribute on the condolence page on behalf of the forum members.

Ian was a staunch supporter of the Norfolk Broads Network Forum, he joined in 2014 and made nearly 7000 posts. Ian always displayed good humour and was liked and respected by everyone. He kept us entertained during lockdowns with his tales of his work life, he also shared recipes and cooking tips freely. Although many members only knew Ian through his online presence, he was considered as a friend by many. He bravely shared his health battles and urged others to look after their health.

Ian, you will be missed by so many. Our thoughts and condolences go to Marina and his family at this sad time. Rest in peace Ian.

I have arranged for a donation on behalf of the forum to Hemsby lifeboat station in memory of Ian.

Hemsby lifeboat was a great passion for him and it is a service that needs even more support at the moment.

The donation appears in my name but does allow them to claim gift aid.

Thank you indeed mark, Dad will be honoured indeed if he saw this as will Dan and the team at Hemsby.

Thank you again for all other donations and kind thoughts on the condolences.

Once again all are welcome at the ceremony next Friday and at the wake which is being held at the Boathouse at Ormesby Broad.

If you are unable to attend I may have some printed programs which we can share about, please PM me and I'll get one in the post.

I much admired his dedication to Hemsby Lifeboats especially when he was battling so much with his health.

I only just saw this. So sorry to hear this news. Ian bore his illness with fortitude and dignity and his account of his life, and the various treatments and tribulations he encountered towards the end of it, was both interesting and awe inspiring.   Sincere condolences to Ian's family.

Hi all,

I feel Dad would have mentioned something here about Charles diagnoses, No doubt the king will receive the best possible treatment though and fingers crossed he makes a complete recovery.

Huge thanks to all the kind thoughts and comments and for all those who have donated.

The links to donate to Hemsby Lifeboat in memory of dad is: https://www.paypal.com/pools/c/91noE7NU5H (Commisson free).
